視覺暫留是光對視網膜所產生的視覺，在光停止作用後，仍然保留一段時間的現象，比如：我們日常使用的日光燈每秒大約熄滅100餘次，但我們基本感覺不到日光燈的閃動，這都是因為燈光在眼球中產生視覺暫留。
同樣，透過黑白條紋間隔遮掩，可使觀看者產生視覺暫留的現象。因此產生圖像之間的連貫，因而成動畫(Moiré motion illusion)。
