遊戲簡介:
玩家需要控制遊戲系列的主角——瑪利歐。（雙人遊戲中，第二玩家控制路易吉。）遊戲的目標在於遊歷蘑菇王國，並從大反派庫巴的魔掌裡救回桃子公主。瑪利歐可以在遊戲世界收集散落各處的金幣，或者敲擊特殊的「？磚塊」，獲得其中的金幣或特殊道具。其他「秘密磚塊」（通常為隱藏）還可能藏有更多的金幣或某些稀有道具。如果玩家獲得了超級蘑菇，瑪利歐會變大一倍，並能多承受一次敵人或障礙的傷害，還能將頭頂上的磚塊擊碎。
