圖一 無情大水
由於雙子城的佩斯本身就是個緊鄰多瑙河的沖積平原，與其他歐洲傍水而居的城市一樣，水災經常可見。這座教堂外牆上刻劃著1838年三月13日的毀滅性洪水。那時有許多人需要救助。有的人先談利益才救人，而這位先生雖然富有，但救人不談條件。因此，美名得以流傳後世。
Photo 1, Ruthless Flood
Due to Pest's location on a flood plain next to the Danube, floods can often be seen here like all other European cities that are located next to one of the major rivers. A bronze plaque was installed on the outside wall of this church regarding the destructive flood took place on March 13, 1838. Many people were desperately in need for rescue. Some people would only save others when profits were agreed upon; however, this gentleman who was rich but rescue others without asking for any return. Thus, his name and merits have been passed down for many generations.
圖二 歸零重新開始
1838年三月佩斯城完全毀滅。當時工業革命對於都市的影響之一就是城市規劃的研究。因著這場大水，佩斯城得以砍掉重練。新的城市規劃注重百年的發展，就像日人規劃高雄那樣，城市格局大而方正。而布達城這邊皇宮底下的廣場，則被定為全國公路的起始點，也就是著名的 KM 0。（註：西班牙的太陽廣場郵政總局前的地上也有一個KM 0的標誌。
Photo 2, Restart from Zero
The city Pest was completely destroyed in March 1938. One of the profound influences of industrialization is the studies of city planning. The planning of the new Pest aimed at the development of the city's next 100 years. The layout of the city is rather broad and square like what Japanese did for Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Over the plaza beneath the palace on the Buda side lays the starting point of all the roads in Hungary, which is called KM zero. (Note: There is also a KM zero in Puerta del Sol in Spain.)
圖三 美帝來襲
如同前文提過，1990年共黨垮台，百廢待舉。布達佩斯的房地產大量地被西方資金購得。紐約咖啡廳的名稱其來有自。一間紐約保險公司買下了大樓，在轉角處開了一間巴洛克式美輪美奐的咖啡廳。其代表的意義不言自喻。共產主義沒落，美帝入侵。在這樣歷史悠久的城市的傷痕上構築了一個咖啡廳，並為其取名歷史文化相對膚淺的「紐約」。
Photo 3, Invasion by American Empire
As mentioned in my previous post, communism collapsed in 1990 in Hungary and everything was waiting to take off. The real estate market was largely sucked up by investors from the west. The origin of the name of New York Cafe is about a New York insurance company who bought the entire building and opened up a flamboyant baroque-style cafe on the corner. The meaning of this action is quite self-evident--the downfall of the communism as well as the invasion of American capitalism (you can see the conflict of the two ideologies all over the city). I find it somewhat revolting to see a cafe was built on the wound of a historical city with a name called New York, a city relatively shallow in terms of culture and history.
