Even if you’re not a basketball fan, you’d have to be living under a rock not to know who Kobe Bryant is. Michael Jordan may be the GOAT, but Kobe, also known by the nickname Black Mamba, is almost as famous.

Born in Philadephia, Kobe spent a lot of his childhood in Italy, where his father, Joe Bryant, played professional basketball after retiring from the NBA. Returning to the U.S. fluent in Italian—and basketball—at the age of 13, Kobe played so well in high school that he was drafted into the NBA straight out of high school.

During that time, he led the Lakers to five NBA championships, played in 18 All-Star games, was a 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, a 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, 2008 NBA MVP, and two-time NBA Finals MVP winner. He even won two gold medals as a member of the U.S. national team in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics.

After a series of injuries, Kobe decided to retire from the NBA in 2016 at the age of 36. But Kobe didn’t just spend his retirement playing golf. He kept busy writing books, making films and teaching his daughter Gianna, also a talented basketball player, to follow in his footsteps. And then, on January 26, 2020, tragedy struck. The helicopter that Kobe and Gianna were flying in—along with six family friends—crashed on the way to a basketball game, killing everyone on board. Kobe was 41-years-old, and his daughter just 13.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving became the first team-mates to each top 40 points in the same NBA finals game, and the Cleveland Cavaliers staved off elimination by beating the Golden State Warriors 112-97 on Monday night.
James had 41 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists. Irving had 41 points on 17 for 24 shooting and added six assists for the Cavaliers. Game 6 of the series is on Thursday in Cleveland.
Klay Thompson scored 37 points and Stephen Curry had 25 for the Warriors, who were without the suspended Draymond Green for the game. They lost Andrew Bogut early in the third quarter to a knee injury.
It was tied at 61-61 at the half. Cleveland owned the second half, outscoring the hosts 51-36. For James, it’s now 26 consecutive series with at least one road win, extending his NBA record.
Golden State now lead the series 3-2. The Warriors clinched last year’s title with a Game 6 win on the Cavs’ home floor.
Two wildly popular basketball icons—one a pint-sized backcourt scorer, the other a 50-gallon drum of low-post diesel—have taken a major step toward entering the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame announced at its annual All-Star Weekend press event Friday that Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal are the headliners in the 2016 class of finalists for induction. Final selections for induction will be made during the NCAA Final Four in April.
Iverson, 40, was a nine-time All-Star and four-time scoring champion who led the Sixers to the 2001 Finals. He retired from the NBA in 2010 with career averages of 26.7 PPG and 6.2 APG over 14 seasons before continuing his career overseas.
O’Neal, 43, won four titles with the Lakers and Heat, earning 15 All-Star selections, an MVP and three Finals MVP awards before retiring in 2011. He averaged 23.7 PPG, 10.9 RPG and 2.3 BPG during a 19-year career.
The contrasts between the two legends were evident when they were welcomed to a stage that was littered with Hall of Famers like Oscar Robertson, Isiah Thomas and Reggie Miller. Iverson struck a purposefully casual look, dressed in a blue Reebok T-shirt, gold chains, jeans and a navy New York Yankees hat. O’Neal wore a dark suit and tie, as if ready to take the set for TNT’s Inside The NBA. When the 6-foot Iverson, often called the NBA’s “pound for pound” best, hugged former NBA referee Dick Bavetta, the two men practically saw eye to eye. The larger-than-life O’Neal, meanwhile, drew a wisecrack about his size from Yao Ming, his fellow 7-footer.

After taking a 3-1 series lead, the Warriors dropped Game 5 112-97 sans the
suspended Draymond Green. He came back for Game 6, but the Cavs led wire to
wire in a contest where the Warriors were shut out for the first five
minutes. Golden State made a small run but never cut the lead to fewer than
seven points in the second half.
