1918年第一次世界大戰末期，時任美國遠征軍總司令John Pershing將軍要求為軍隊裝備更大口徑的機槍，他向軍械部門下達了製作新型機槍的要求：口徑不低於0.5英吋以及槍口初速不低於2,700英呎，以滿足防空與反裝甲的需要。
1921年新型重機槍完成基本設計，命名為M1921。美國陸軍、海軍和海軍陸戰隊從1923年起開始採用；至於圖片中出現的M2重機槍(M2 Machine Gun)是後續的改良版(M2就是第二版Mk 2的意思)，這款大家俗稱五零機槍(美軍暱稱為奶媽Ma Deuce)成為軍隊正式裝備是在1933年，官方名稱為白朗寧M2HB.50口徑機動式機槍(Browning Machine Gun，Cal. .50， M2HB，Flexible.)，所以那隻英勇報國的暴龍，不管是不是最後一隻從軍的爬蟲類，實際投身戰鬥任務勢必是在二戰之後。
