Stolen Time
A Cuban joke goes “the only telecom in Cuba is state owned, so it is also the best in Cuba.“ Unlike other countries, using the Internet here is not so easy. So, some travelers chose to do full Internet detox whereas others will purchase some Internet Cards that connect only at designated spots or restaurants. Even though I was told to log out after using the Card because some private hotspot providers might steal my remaining time by copying my account number and password, my time was still stolen. Like what happened to me, Cuba’s time and future has also been stolen, as is evident when strolling down its time-frozen streets with buildings from a distant past.
Because the US requires other countries comply with its embargo on Cuba, life here seems to be frozen from the period between the 1950’s and 1960’s, as suggested by the PARE/ stop sign. Many eye-catching classic cars are actually from the 50’s. The ubiquitous horse carriages create the illusion of time and space disconnect. To add to the confusion, I even saw a large horse carriage in Santa Clara being used as a collectivo, which means an unlicensed shared taxi for the locals.
Time-theft becomes unkinder in Trinidad, located in central Cuba. Due to its location being closer to other Caribbean countries, Trinidad long benefited from the slave trade to support the manpower needs of its cane sugar, coffee and tobacco industries. By the 19th century, Trinidad became the center of the cane sugar trade. With its increased demand for manpower in the burgeoning cane sugar industry, Trinidad naturally turned into a stronghold for black slave trade. Many colonizers made their fortune with time stolen from black slaves for more than 100 years. This is one of the reasons Fidel Castro led the revolution in 1953 to close the gap between the black and the white. Meanwhile, the revolution served as another way to erase social turmoil caused by the enormous gap between the rich and the poor. Such turmoil, including prostitution, drugs, gambling and violence, was a direct result of the US taking advantage of the vulnerable Cuban economy and political instability from its time as a young nation in 1901 all the way through to the attempt to overthrow Castro’s government with the infamous US-led Bay of Pigs invasion in April, 1961.
While the US government has stolen Cuba’s time, they cannot steal Cubans’ pride. Beggars can be seen in the streets, but most of them are personally clean as well as dressed in clean clothes. At one time, Cuba was sanctioned and embargoed to the point where it had little choice but to embrace communism in order to receive much needed financial aid and resources from the Soviet Union. However, Cuba has always been a true socialist nation at heart; Cuban people enjoy free education as well as free medical care, which allows them to live proudly in their time-stolen country.
While Cuba’s time has been stolen, and although life can often be tough, one cannot live without entertainment and fun. Cuban entertainment seems to exist in a frozen state where the clock has been turned back 60 or 70 years. In the corner of Plaza Mayor in Viñales sits the Centro Cultural Polo Montañez. To be more specific, it is a dance club, a great place for unpretentious and carefree dancers. Here people appreciate passionate music mixed with salsa, rumba and lambada. Much different from the dark and sometimes seedy modern dance clubs in Taiwan, what prevails here is a natural way of socializing and entertaining. They dance to their heart’s content and each night recreate that happy atmosphere of the 60’s.

Here is a link to a YouTube video to see the feverish dancing at the club.

I’m not smart enough to possibly know how Cubans can get back their stolen time, nor why they continue to be punished by their big neighbor to the north. But what I can do is show you today’s Cuba as I saw it. What you, as a visitor, can also do is bring along some basic goods with you as small tokens of your appreciation for seeing Cuba and give them to the strong and beautiful souls that cross your path along the way.

Bypassing the Heart of Asia: a Solo Backpacking Trip
(English edition available below)
Starting May 7, 2018, I’ll be on a 42-day solo backpacking trip to Central Asia, Western/Northwestern China and Russia. The title I give this trip is “Bypassing the Heart of Asia”.
The heart of Asia, commonly known as central Asia, is a region where Turkic, Mongolian and Islamic cultures intertwine. After Rather than “piercing” through it, I will first get to one side of it, and then make a huge detour to the other side. This is why I call it a heart bypass. (I guess it still sounds vague. Check out the maps attached to this post.)
This grand trip idea started last year, after a few European trips I took. Due to the limit of my paid time-off, those trips lasted only one week or even shorter. Then I started thinking: how cool would it be if I can get a longer time off, let’s say like 1 month, to travel from Europe to Asia through all the former Soviet Union countries (which seem extraordinarily attractive to me after my Baltic States trip last year)? And I knew that the best timing for me to do that would be the gap between two jobs. Therefore, I started conceiving this trip while looking for a new job. The job search went fairly smoothly, but the trip planning soon faced some difficulties.
The biggest difficulty is visa. As a Taiwanese passport holder, visa is required for me to enter Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyz, and those countries are notorious for their lengthy and costly visa application process. For each visa, I have to buy a letter of invitation (LOI), go to the consulate in Washington DC in person, wait for one or two weeks, and then pick up the visa in person. Each visa can take a month and cost $200-300. Things have changed recently -- visa waiver is now available for many western countries, but not for Taiwan citizens, unfortunately.
Another difficulty is time. One month may seem long, but to travel from the westernmost point of Europe (Lisbon) to Taiwan without flying, it’s still way too short. Even if I take train through all the European countries without making stops, I’d probably have only 3-4 days to spend in each central Asian country, and 2/3 of the time I’ll be on the train. This is not the way I would like to travel!
As my original plan was quickly proven unrealistic, I began to make compromises: giving up the attempt to start from the westernmost point of Europe, allowing myself to fly once (in order to enter using visa on arrival, which is applicable only if you fly in), and reducing the number of countries to visit. Finally, I came up with this “heart bypass” itinerary:
Week 1: Uzbekistan
Week 2: Heading east to Kyrgyzstan
Weeks 3-4: Heading east/northeast to western and northwestern China
Weeks 5-6: From Russian Far East heading west to Golden Ring, the European part of Russia
Some may wonder about this: why do I travel eastward into China first and turn westward to go back to the European part of Russia first, instead of starting from European Russia and go eastward all the way? This is because Russia has a visa waiver policy during the 2018 FIFA World Cup: all foreign ticket buyers can enter Russia between June 4 and July 25 without a visa. Since my trip has to end on June 17, the only period for me to take advantage of that would be June 4-17. That’s why I have to do Central Asia and China first and enter Russia later.
Still cannot believe the trip is just around the corner! I have found a new job, wrapped up my previous job, and been approved for all visas. This is my first time trying to write about my trip while still traveling -- previously I always did that after trips. Writing while traveling means the narratives would probably be closer to what I actually see and feel on the way. I’m not a big fan of broadcasting or checking-in everywhere to show off my trip, but I’d like to do this “near-time writing” as an experiment, and see how my travel and my writing would both be made different.
Welcome to join my trip. Get yourself ready to head out with me on Sunday night!

***Best Malaysian in Men’s 10KM in SCKLM***
Managed to defend my title again today, came back second place Overall with the time of 33:38 minutes (3:22 min/km). Better my timing for more than 2 minutes compare to last year, 35:43 minutes.
Happy to be back and defend my title again for two years in a row! 33:38 minutes is my Season Best this year also my Best 10K timing in Malaysia. I did 33:26 minutes last year during the Sundown Taipei 2017. 12 seconds of my Personal Record and excited to race hard today and make an attempt to chase the Kenyan in front of me.
Still couldn’t believe I did 5,000M on two days ago and 10,000M yesterday at 3pm in UNIMAP and thankfully I managed to came back on time this morning to race SCKLM 10KM.
I missed my train last night as I saw the wrong timing, and I took the bus at 7.30pm. Arrived at KL Sentral this morning at 3.45pm, took the LRT and back to Kelana Jaya. Thanks to She Yong for fetching me back and went out again to take the LRT and went to the race site.
Both legs left only 50% after the 10,000M yesterday at 3pm, running at 35 Degree Celsius. Today’s performance was all about mental toughness. Kept thinking I am the Best Malaysian last year and the reason I came here today is to defend my title. Focus on my target, charge down the street, pay attention on my running technique, the metronome beating at 185 spm was set it on my Garmin Fenix 5X before the flag off, kept the rhythm going, tap tap tap, arm swing to quicken my stride to match the metronome.
Starting off running side by side with Siva, follow closely behind the Kenyan. Both of us work together, exchange the lead after the first 3km, my turn to lead. Doing our best to take him down. After 6km, I was on my own. Dig deep and trying hard to reduce the gap as the distance widen up after that.
Kept looking at his back all the way until the last km. Closing down the gap with the last surge, but the distance is too far away between both of us.
It was really a good course today, I felt strong even though with the 15km from the past two days. Mentally boost myself up, kept thinking of “To be a great champion you must believe you are the best. If you are not, pretend you are.” - Muhammad Ali. One of the factor that boost my performance today is the Awards I won yesterday being the Best Male Athlete in Track&Field with Double Gold I won from 5,000M and 10,000M.
Thank you so much for the recognition and everyone for the continuous support, cheers on me while running this morning! Thank you to all my sponsors as well especially Beet It Sport, Actigin, Garmin Malaysia, Lifeline ID, Life Engineering, LILA Exogen, and also to my parents who came and support this morning.

My fitness routine is good for those who want to keep fit by doing FUN sports (rather than people trying to do intense workouts to lose weight in a short amount of time...which is not healthy anyway ^^) I think the first step to keeping fit is finding a sport you really enjoy playing. For me, I absolutely love running, swimming, karate and of course, badminton! I find that whenever you play a sport that you love, time flies and before you know it, you'll lose weight naturally and healthily.
Unlike doing specific workouts for your arms or thighs, sports can give you an overall workout which can tone your entire body as a whole! If you want to gain more muscle mass, sports is the way to go. Even if you don't want to want to have bulky muscles, you can just stretch before and after (like I did in this video) to lean out your muscles.
As for myself, I've done karate for a little over 9 years now and I got my black belt last year. The style of karate I do is a branch off of gōjū ryū (剛柔流) called meibukan (明武舘). I've also played badminton basically all my life but I only started playing competitively 4 years ago. I also started swimming competitively (this is not my forte sport but I do enjoy it ^^) 4 years ago as well. To date, I still cannot dive and I just look like a dying elephant cannon balling into the water. I've taken diving lessons before but the coach basically gave up on me. Something about diving just really scares me - I'm shuddering at the thought of diving right now haha. I've never been a competitive runner because I just lightly jog in an attempt to build up my low stamina. I started running long distances the beginning of this Summer. At the beginning of July, I was only able to run 4km max. However, I went running 3 - 4 times a week and now, I can run 6-8km.
Here is how my typical week looks like...
Monday:
Karate (1 hour) + Competitive Badminton Games (3 - 4 hours)
Tuesday:
Running (1 hour)
Wednesday:
Karate (1 hour) + Competitive Badminton Games (3 - 4 hours)
Thursday:
Running (1 hour) + used to do ballet (1 hour)
Friday:
Badminton coaching lessons (1 hour) + leisure badminton (2 hours)
Saturday and Sunday:
My recovery days. You can find me on the couch eating chips and salsa all day haha.
Aside from keeping yourself active, it's also very very important to have a good diet! I try to drink water as much as I can. Sometimes, when I'm not in the mood for water, I go for green tea (or any type of Chinese tea, the type without sugar / cream / milk). Make sure you have a balanced diet with protein and veggies and all that good stuff. I am not knowledgeable in this diet field at all so I would suggest you can find other Youtubers (or a professional) who can provide you with info on how to eat healthy :)
I recently revamped my blog so please feel free to check it out here~ http://www.abrushofbeauty.blogspot.com

The Chicago Bulls had never let an NBA Finals series go to a Game Seven in their franchise history, and all but one of their previous five titles (the exception was in 1991) were clinched in the sixth game. Thus, winning Game Six in Salt Lake City was imperative for Chicago.
Yet, as they arrived at the Delta Center for Game 6, things did not look good for the Bulls. Scottie Pippens back gave way when he dunked the opening basket of the game and he was slowed down, scoring only eight points all game. Tensions ran high in the Delta Center when the Jazz discovered problems of their own. They suffered several shot clock violations, including one on a successful three-point attempt by Howard Eisley. Television replays showed, however, that Eisley got the ball out of his hands in time before the shot clock hit zero and the referees missed the call.[citation needed] In the fourth quarter, the Bulls closed the gap. With 41.9 seconds left, the Bulls suffered a jolt as John Stockton hit a clutch 3-point shot to give Utah an 86-83 lead and send the Delta Center into a frenzy. Down by three, the Bulls had one last chance to stay alive. Running perilously low on energy, the Bulls knew they must win the game or else face overtime.
After Michael Jordan made a layup to cut the Jazz lead to one, the Bulls needed to stop the Jazz from scoring again. When John Stockton passed the ball to Karl Malone, Michael Jordan stole the ball away and dribbled to the front. Guarding him was Bryon Russell, one of the Jazzs best perimeter defenders. Jordan drove inside the 3-point line, crossed over (it is argued that he pushed off on Russell [1]), and hit a 20-foot jump shot to give the Bulls an 87-86 lead with 5.2 seconds left. After a time-out, Stocktons three-point attempt hit the rim and bounced away, giving the Bulls their sixth NBA title in 8 years. Jordan, who scored 45 points, and whose game-winning shot has been immortalized in many records, was named the Finals MVP.
