【教學及學生申辦業務請務必配合防疫措施辦理】(#5月21日更新)
Teaching and students’ application please cope with epidemic procedures (#UpdatedMay21)
.
各位好:
.

Dear NTU community members,
.
Due to a rapid escalation in the number of COVID-19 cases in Taipei City and New Taipei City recently, the epidemic situation is now approaching Alert Level 3 (orange light). In response to this urgency, the University is asking all academic and administrative units to comply with the following preventive measures:
.
1) Starting May 17th, all classes will be switched to remote-only instruction for the rest of the spring semester. Instructors can upload their lecture videos to NTU COOL. Since the epidemic is escalating, the alternative to on-site final exam for assessing students’ learning outcome is strongly recommended and planned in advance. The University provides mechanisms for conducting online testing, online oral reporting, peer assessment and online drills. Please refer to the attached document in preparation for such eventualities. ( http://curri.aca.ntu.edu.tw/covid/課程評量調整建議_eng.pdf )
.
2) To prevent the epidemic, all application forms with review and/or signature from course instructors, mentors, advisors, and/or supervisors of departments/graduate institutes/degree programs (Course Withdrawal, Leave of Absence, Dropping Double Major and/or Minor Study etc. are included) can be replaced with flexible application procedures. Students can mail to the person and/or unit in charge with application form as attachment. If they approve your application, please forward this approved mail to the according unit of Office of Academic Affairs [note]. Late submissions will not be accepted.
.
3) Graduate students can take their master’s or Ph.D. thesis/dissertation defense through the video conference. The signature of the committee member can be replaced by an electronic scan. The committee members who use the video method to conduct the master’s or Ph.D. thesis/dissertation defense are allowed to apply for their attendance fee, but not allowed to apply for their travel allowance.
.
4) In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline of the thesis/dissertation submission for the second semester of the Academic Year 2020-2021 has been extended to August 31, 2021 because the next day is the first day of classes for the next semester. The deadline for the thesis/dissertation defense is also flexible. As long as the Master’s and Ph.D. students can complete their thesis/dissertation submission process by August 31, 2021, they will be able to graduate on schedule. If the students are unable to complete the process of submitting their thesis/dissertation by August 31, 2021, they have to pay the tuition and fees for the next semester, and if their maximum period of study has expired, they shall be ordered to be withdrawn from the university.
.
[NOTE] Students affiliated in the following units shall mail to the Branch Office of Academic Affairs of the College of Medicine: Second Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing (all students), Department of Nursing (sophomores and above), other undergraduate departments of the College of Medicine (juniors and above) and Department of Public Health (sophomores and above); other undergraduate students shall mail to Undergraduate Academic Affairs Division. New blog --> https://www.thechillmom.com/2020/12/geniebook-review.html
If you don't have time to read the entire blog, in short, this is why I think Geniebook has all the essentials in academic learning and more!
👉🏼 The A.I. in Geniebook detects a child’s strengths and weaknesses[p] in a subject and curate relevant questions to them for practice, keeping it fun and challenging at the same time.
👉🏼 Bubble points! With every worksheet done, Lauren gets to accumulate bubble points and redeem anything she likes from the Bubble Store - cultivating independence[q] and love for learning.
👉🏼 And as a parent, it means no shuttling between tuition and the need for assessment books! No marking for me to do either because Geniebook worksheets are marked by professionals within 1-2 [r]days. Lauren also gets to see the instant solution, meaning she learns as she completes the questions without having to wait a long time for feedback.
👉🏼 And many more plusses! I’m so glad we found Geniebook.
If you like to try out Geniebook for your kids, go to
https://bit.ly/3m9VQ6Q
It’s pretty much how a worksheet on Geniebook is like and it’s a free strength assessment test too!

【Campus Info】Teaching arrangements for semester 2 announced. "Pass/Fail" option will not be offered.
Professor Ian Holliday, Vice-President (Teaching & Learning) of HKU announced the latest teaching arrangements for semester 2 through email today (5/11).
Regarding delivery mode arrangement
The school announced that teaching arrangements in semester 2 will be similar to the current one in semester 1. Since students' demand for the face-to-face component of hybrid courses is limited and a single teaching mode offers a better learning experience, more courses will be delivered purely in online mode.
Course coordinators will issue their respective course delivery mode through SIS by 11 December 2020. The options include online, hybrid, face-to-face (only in very special circumstances will the f2f option be available). Students can then check the course delivery mode in ‘Course/Class Attribute’ section in SIS.
Regarding exam arrangement
Final exams in semester 2 will take place online. If all the students taking a course are in Hong Kong and it is safe for them to attend an in-person exam, final exams will otherwise be held in person. There will be a specific exam arrangement for certain programmes, such as professional ones. Faculties will issue separate guidance to their students about this.
Regarding assessment options
The school announced that "pass/fail" option will no longer be offered. Students will only have two assessment options: letter grade, which will be calculated towards GPA, or late drop. The deadline for students to late drop a course will be 23:59 on 9 April 2021. It is explained that the past assessment options are not appropriate as a long-term measure, for they were devised in response to the uncertain situation concerning online and hybrid teaching modes over the past 12 months.

Education in China is a state-run system of public education run by the Ministry of Education. All citizens must attend school for at least nine years, known as the nine-year compulsory education, which the government funds.
It includes six years of primary education, starting at age six or seven, and three years of junior secondary education (middle school) for ages 12 to 15. Some provinces may have five years of primary school but four years for middle school. After middle school, there are three years of high school, which then completes the secondary education.
The Ministry of Education reported a 99 percent attendance rate for primary school and an 80 percent rate for both primary and middle schools. In 1985, the government abolished tax-funded higher education, requiring university applicants to compete for scholarships based on academic ability. In the early 1980s the government allowed the establishment of the first private school, increasing the number of undergraduates and people who hold doctoral degrees fivefold from 1995 to 2005.
In 2003 China supported 1,552 institutions of higher learning (colleges and universities) and their 725,000 professors and 11 million students (see List of universities in China). There are over 100 National Key Universities, including Peking University and Tsinghua University. Chinese spending has grown by 20% per year since 1999, now reaching over $100bn, and as many as 1.5 million science and engineering students graduated from Chinese universities in 2006. China published 184,080 papers as of 2008.
China has also become a top destination for international students. As of 2013, China is the most popular country in Asia for international students, and ranks third overall among countries.
Laws regulating the system of education include the Regulation on Academic Degrees, the Compulsory Education Law, the Teachers Law, the Education Law, the Law on Vocational Education, and the Law on Higher Education. See also: Law of the People's Republic of China.
Although Shanghai and Hong Kong are among the top performers in the Programme for International Student Assessment, China's educational system has been criticized for its rigorousness and its emphasis on test preparation.

When Ben Simmons got the ball in his hands and started to drive, there was a palpable rise in excitement inside the Thomas & Mack Arena Tuesday night. Fans leaned forward in their seats. When he’d make a pass, there were “oohs” and “ahs” of anticipation.
Which were usually followed by a missed shot from a Sixers a teammate. Simmons had six assists Tuesday night in a Philadelphia loss to Golden State, but he could have easily had another half dozen.
What matters right now you can feel the excitement the No. 1 pick brings to the court. His passing skills and court vision are better than advertised — and that was seen as the strength that set him apart. Sixers fans are going to love watching him play.
But he’s also got a long way to go to fulfill that promise. He was called a bit of a project at the draft, and that assessment is correct, too.
Through five Summer League games in Utah and Las Vegas, he is shooting 37 percent from the floor. He doesn’t have counters to his go-to moves, ones better defenders will take away once real NBA defenders are on him. He hasn’t attempted a three. You can see the potential on defense with his length, but he has a lot of learning to do on that and as well.
Philly management — more than the fan base — may be tired of waiting around for wins, but patience is the order of the day with Simmons.
“There’s no immediate fix planned for anything with a player who is 19,” Sixers Summer League coach Lloyd Pierce said. “He’s still growing into his game and now he’s jumping into the NBA where he’s got to learn a whole new set of players and tendencies, how defenses are playing him. We’re just trying to get him out there, see what he can do. We want to see how the players play with him, we want to see how he plays with the other guys. And that’s not something that is going to happen right away.”
Simmons has the gift of vision that only a few players — LeBron James, Ricky Rubio, etc. — have with their passing. It led fellow draftee Denzel Valentine to compare him to a mini-LeBron. Which is unfair, but welcome to being a No. 1 pick.
“I play like Ben Simmons,” he said. “I try not to compare myself to other players. There are guys I look at and try to take parts of their games into mine.”
His strength right now is in the open court.
“Transition, I’m a point forward, so if someone can get me the ball I can set plays up,” Simmons said…
“Whatever they give me I take,” Simmons said. “Every time I’m out there I try to contribute, whether it’s passing, scoring.”
Simmons admitted hitting a bit of a wall, getting tired and losing a little offensive focus in the fifth game Tuesday night. It’s pretty common at this point in Summer League — and coaches across the board are quick to point out it’s not going to get easier. Players, including Simmons, have to push through it.
“He’s a special talent, a phenomenal player, he can pass the ball, he can attack in transition, so we want him to stay aggressive,” Pierce said. “We want him to continue to flourish with the things he already does. And he’s done that.
“Sustainability, to do that for 48 minutes, for 82 games, is going to be a challenge. We want to see him bring it every night because a lot of people will be expecting him to do so.”
