As an #Entrepreneur

The pandemic brought out an unprecedented set of responses from small business owners around the world. I remember this time last year, when every founder literally folded up their sleeves to do the work they expected from their team.

How many restauranteurs were in their kitchens washing dishes? How many fashion designers were sewing their own repairs? How many school founders were back in the classroom to cover teachers who were feeling the pressures of the pandemic?

They’ve always known how to do ALL parts of the work, but then they were challenged to do every part of it with greater fidelity and love. And that was crucial in helping them remember what they were willing to do to keep their vision alive.

On my side, one of my realisations was how much I could get out of my comfort zone. I shared with you that I am a very shy person. And yet, during the pandemic, I had to step up and face people.

I had to sign client correspondences with my name, take responsibility for every decision, and be ready to take their comments— good and bad.

It was nerve-wracking, nearly harrowing. It was hard enough to make decisions that affected many; It was even more frightening to know that ultimately, I would be the face people would associate every action with.

From centre closures, to new policies, to being the focus of a community quarantine challenge— I never thought I would have to leave the safety of generic emails, and speak with honesty and courage.

But it IS true what they say— when challenges come, they test how much you value and love something.

I am still here, and a tad bit braver, I suppose. You can even say I’ve come out of my shell a bit more… and now, it’s more likely I won’t be going back in.

A friend asked me over lunch - How did you grow your business?

If I can reduce it to just one thing, it is “ask for help.”

Whether you like it or not, every #momboss needs help. But we often won’t do it because of these common misconceptions (and I used to have these limiting beliefs too):

1️⃣ We don’t want to be a bother. We don’t want to disturb what others are doing and bring them into our own problems. But people want to be a part of your life. People want to help you.

2️⃣ It makes us feel small. In a culture that preaches self-sufficiency, it can be humiliating to admit you need help. But over the years, I’ve come to see that asking for help is a great strength. It allows me to work more in my zone of genius.

These days, it’s no longer “how can I solve this problem”, it’s “who can help me solve this problem faster and better.” 💯🆙👩🏻‍💻

And it applies to out-sourcing, hiring or simply getting a coach, so I’m doing things right in a shorter amount of time. ⏰

3️⃣ We think that to be success, we must know all the answers. We do things better than how others would do it. So we ended up doing EVERYTHING! 😵 But truth is, we don’t. We need to adopt a humility that allows us to reach out when we need help.

I’m so grateful for #TeamChillMom for without them, we wouldn’t have grown so much in the last 12 months.

Remember, the easiest way to get the help you need, is simply to ask for it.

愛用のウクレレは全て、自身の手作り。またウクレレケース、ストラップも製作している。
1993年生まれ。小学校6年生の夏休みのハワイ旅行で家族がお土産に買ったウクレレを弾き始める。中学1年生からウクレレ作りを始める。14歳の頃にはブルース・シマブクロ、ジョディ・カミサトなどハワイのウクレレプレイヤーのオープニングアクトを務め、「天才ウクレレ少年」としてテレビにも取り上げられる。2010年、ジェイク・シマブクロのジャパンツアーにも出演。2015年には4thアルバム「UKULELE SPLASH!」、クリスマスアルバム「UKULELE Merry Christmas!」を発売。“ハワイのグラミー賞”と言われる「第３９回ナ・ホク・ハノハノ・アワード」最優秀インターナショナル・アルバム部門にダブルノミネートされ、「UKULELE SPLASH!」が日本人としては最年少で見事に受賞した。2016年7月「Made in Japan, To the World.」でメジャーデビュー。2017年、自身初となるフジロックフェスティバルにも出演を果たす。2019年4月より、TOKYO FM人気番組「ジェットストリーム」の公式エンディングテーマ「Mr.Lonely」のアレンジ、演奏を担当。同年8月には「ウクレレによる『ドラゴンクエスト』すぎやまこういち」をリリース。また、海外からも注目を浴び、これまでにアメリカ、イギリス、イタリア、オーストラリア、香港、タイ、台湾、中国、カナダでの公演を果たし、そのプレイが絶賛された。
