SUNHAT / RA’ONG ☀️ Our ancestors referred to the sky as the big sunhat dome, and all earthly creation lay under it ☁️ In the late 1960s My aunty Sina’ Rang wrote the words for this sunhat “Selamat Pakai From Kelabit Girl” (happy wearing, from a Kelabit girl”). Her sister, my aunty Lasong, did the threading of the beads. The beads were a gift from Tony Masonbee who was group headmaster of Baram schools. Sina’ Rang was a student at the school whilst her sister was a cook. The pattern, made of abstract designs and words is typical of basketry patterns of the era of 1960s. They were keen to weave and bead messages that reflected their newly found literacy skills in English and Bahasa ☁️ all that info was passed to me by my mum who is a researcher & also through my cousins kakak Tracy and Bann (Sina’ Rang’s daughters). The hat is now a collection of the British Museum. Kinda lovely how it’s come a full circle and I’m so happy to have it on the cover of my latest album, Sky Songs. "Mama, I never knew you like beads."

Yes, kids, I guess there are many things you still don't know me. Perhaps, over time, I forgot about them myself too. The beauty of having more free time in the past two months meant I was able to rediscover some of my old hobbies, including reading, crocheting and beading.

I took out my bead collection, which has been stored away for over a decade, recently and the girls said "That is a lot of colourful beads, we can start a shop!" Haha. Yup, I used to love beading and bought all sorts of beads and jewellery accessories in Sweden so that I could make them as gifts for friends. It took me a long time to figure out each pattern but I remember the sense of achievement I felt with every pair of earrings, phone strap or charms that was completed, not to mention how each of them warmed hearts and brought smiles.

The kids recently saw how I used hours of time and stayed up late and to cut and twist wires, thread beads, tie knots and put everything together one by one. I hope it reminded all of us on how we can always find time to do the things we love, that it is never too late to rekindle a passion, that a token of love and appreciation can be small but sincere, and that all good things take time.

● Marine Bear series
○Product description

We've made our ever-popular Teddy Bear series even more adorable with the addition of Teddy's friends, Deer and Squirrel. With soft look-alike fur and glass bead eyes, they almost look like they might be alive. Come take a closer look!

Made in bright, lovely tri-color material, the understated logo and poker card motif pattern allow the animal designs to shine. On the cuffs and hems, small chemical lace ribbons add detailing.

The back portion employs a sewing technique called shirring, making it very easy to wear. And so that it stays cool even in summer, it does not have a lining, but the skirt includes a petticoat to protect your modesty.

Besides the dress, this design also comes as a jumper. It is similarly made in lovely tri-color.

For both styles, the 3 colors are off-white, Ecru beige and navy blue.

●Hydrangeas & Butterflies series
○Product description
This series takes the humble garden hydrangea and turns it into an art canvas-like print. Delicate lace lines the hems, and hydrangea petals and butterflies are scattered throughout this elegant dress.

Both of the ribbons in front can be undone with corsage pins.

There are tulle lace butterflies on both the neck ribbon and the ribbon hairclip. When incorporated into your hairstyle, it appears as if butterflies are resting on your head.

Available in 3 colors: purple, blue and pink.

With bunches of strawberries encircling the hem like a wreath, strawberries in baskets printed all over, and lace hearts and flowers patterning the fabric, you can't find a more adorable dress.

Despite being covered in strawberries, the overall feel of the look is classic and elegant, so much so that we feel confident recommending this even to those who usually shy away from fruity and otherwise whimsical designs.

Detailing such as the patterns printed in stripes and the chocolate brown ribbon used to cinch the waist lends it a smart, fresh look.

This jumper features a luxurious tiered skirt design, reminiscent of classical antique dolls.

The edges of the skirt are heavily lined with frills made from the same cloth, resulting in a voluminous, yet casual look thanks to the soft Nashiji (Japanese dimpled texturing technique) applied. The corset-like, structured design of the top which sports a lace-up back, together with the pannier worn underneath the skirt propping it up, lends a lively beauty to the overall silhouette.

The 2 ribbons in front can be removed with a corsage pin.
