Carmelo Anthony made up for a slow start with an excellent finish.

Anthony scored 29 points, including the go-ahead basket with 18.9 seconds left, and Ruben Patterson added 20 to lead the Denver Nuggets to their third straight win, 97-93 over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night.

"My team needed me out there to get some things done," Anthony said. "At halftime I just told them it's time for me to wake up and just go out there and win the game."

Mission accomplished for the Nuggets, who opened a seven-game, 10-day road trip.

Anthony scored 20 points in the second half and 11 in the fourth quarter, none bigger than when he dribbled down the baseline and came around from under the right side for a one-handed layup that put Denver ahead 95-93.

"I saw a double (team) coming and I just tried to beat it," Anthony said. "I just had to go fast."

Marcus Camby had 13 points, 14 rebounds and one of the Nuggets' two blocks on Philadelphia's last true possession that allowed them to hang on for their first three-game winning streak since Jan. 14-25. Denver also improved to six games over .500 for just the second time this season.

Allen Iverson scored 38 points and Chris Webber had 17 points and 20 rebounds for the Sixers, who lost their third straight game.

After Anthony's basket, Iverson had a shot blocked by DerMarr Johnson. The Sixers retained possession and Kyle Korver's driving layup attempt was swatted away by Camby, his fifth block.

"It was a big defensive play," said Camby, who leads the league in blocked shots per game. "We wanted to get him away from the 3-point line. I was able to use my size."

Anthony sank two free throws and the Sixers' final desperation shot was off the mark.

This was the third straight late-game disaster for Philadelphia. The Sixers lost a seven-point lead in the final 2:20 a night earlier at Boston, and a botched defensive strategy led to an easy layup in the final seconds Sunday against Indiana.

"I've never gone through anything like this before," Webber said. "I'm not a loser. You can never get used to losing. It changes your whole lifestyle."

This time, the Sixers tried to be the ones who came back in the fourth.

Iverson hit a 14-footer that got the Sixers within two late in the quarter, then drove by Andre Miller on the left side for a layup that made it 93-all with 2:03 left. The Nuggets where whistled for a shot-clock violation on the next possession, and Iverson missed a tough, off-balance shot.

Down by 15 midway through the third, the Nuggets needed quite a rally to get this road trip off to a winning start. The Nuggets opened the fourth on a 13-0 run, getting a game-tying 3-pointer from Earl Boykins, then another 3 from Greg Buckner that gave them an 82-79 lead.

"After this road trip, I think it will say a lot about us and where we stand," Anthony said.

Iverson and Webber combined for 21 of Philadelphia's 25 points in the third quarter, but Johnson hit a 3 for Denver in the final ticks of the third that got the deficit into single digits.

Game notes

Sixers G Kevin Ollie (sprained ankle) did not play. Korver started in his place. ... Coach Maurice Cheeks said he spoke with Webber about the decision to bench him for the entire fourth quarter against Boston. "I was doing what I thought at the time was going to help us win the game," Cheeks said. ... Miller was whistled for a technical in the third. ... Denver's seven-game trip ties the longest in franchise history.

Nuggets forward Reggie Evans said it was going to take time for everything to come together under the leadership of Allen Iverson.

Try two games.

Iverson had 28 points and 13 assists in Denver's 116-105 victory over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

"I'd say we're real comfortable with him now," said Evans, who had 14 points and 14 rebounds coming off the bench.

Iverson picked up his second double-double -- and first win -- since being acquired by Denver for Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two first-round picks in 2007 on Dec. 19.

He and backcourt mate Earl Boykins, who may be the smallest tandem in the league, ran the Celtics around the court all evening. Boykins finished with 28 points as well.

"Earl and I are just playing good together," Iverson said. "I just wanted to make it easy for him and make it easier for everybody."

Iverson definitely made it easier for everybody. Iverson had permission from Nuggets coach George Karl to shoot more and pass less.

But he preferred to get his teammates involved.

"That's why he's a great teammate," said Eduardo Najera, who had 16 points and 11 boards. "His leadership is helping us a lot."

Had things gone differently, Iverson could've been a member of the Celtics, who were also in the running for his skills. The Celtics certainly saw what they missed out on Tuesday night.

"I honestly just have a lot of respect for the Boston organization and for them being interested in me in the way they were," Iverson said. "You always have to feel good about somebody wanting your talent. If that had happened, I would have given them the same thing that I'm going to give the Denver Nuggets organization -- just playing hard."

The Nuggets needed Iverson's energy with Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith missing for the third game after receiving their suspensions for their roles in a brawl with the New York Knicks on Dec. 16. Denver is now 2-1 since Anthony was suspended 15 games and Smith for 10.

"Until Melo and J.R. are back on the court, Earl and A.I. are going to have a lot of responsibility," said Karl, who earned the 799th win of his career. He has a chance for No. 800 against a team he used to coach, the Seattle SuperSonics, on Thursday. "It was sure fun to watch."

Boston coach Doc Rivers was missing Paul Pierce for the second straight game with a left foot injury and Wally Szczerbiak with a right ankle sprain. Delonte West, who started in place of Sebastian Telfair, had to be helped off the court just before halftime when he rolled off Boykins and fell on his back.

West started the second half but came out soon after. He finished with 11 points.

Tony Allen scored 18 points for Boston. He had a career-high 30 points against Denver 11 days ago. Al Jefferson had 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, while Gerald Green added 18 points.

"I thought the effort was great, the execution was poor," Rivers said. "Our defense was disappointing."

After Iverson's debut against Sacramento on Friday night, Karl encouraged the point guard to be less unselfish. In his first game, Iverson preferred to get his new teammates involved, having just arrived in town with only a rudimentary knowledge of the offense.

But he won't be bashful any longer. He has three practices under his belt.

"I got it," Iverson said of the offense. "This is the system that I always wanted to play in -- just run, run, run all the time."

Run and run some more was exactly what Denver did against Boston.

"You can't let them relax," Iverson said. "We just want to run (teams) down all the time."

Allen Iverson helped give Denver coach George Karl his 800th win, finishing with 44 points and 10 assists in the Nuggets' 112-98 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics on Thursday night.

Karl was handed a Denver jersey with No. 800 on it along with the game ball after beating his former team to become only the 12th coach in NBA history to reach the milestone. He's 800-555 in 19 seasons.

Iverson had his highest-scoring game since being acquired by Denver in a trade with Philadelphia on Dec. 19. His season high is 46 against Chicago on Nov. 24.

Earl Boykins added 24 points, and Reggie Evans had a season-high 18 rebounds.

Seattle's Damien Wilkins matched his career high with 26 points, and Luke Ridnour finished with 16 points for the Sonics.

Seattle cut a 13-point third quarter deficit to three, 79-76, but Denver closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run _ all by Boykins _ to take a 85-76 lead. Denver opened a 16-point lead midway through the fourth and coasted to its fourth win in five games.

Another major snowstorm blanketed Denver on Thursday afternoon, but there was no postponement this time. Denver's game against Phoenix on Dec. 20 had to be postponed due to blizzard conditions that shut down the airport and forced Gov. Bill Owens to declare a statewide disaster emergency.

Owens declared another disaster emergency Thursday _ the storm was expected to dump close to 18 inches of snow _ but the Nuggets and Sonics still played in front of a little more than half-filled arena.

The Nuggets and Sonics both planned to make dashes for the airport after the game to get out of town for their road games Friday night. The Nuggets will play in New Orleans, and Seattle will travel to Minnesota.

Seattle star Ray Allen didn't make the trip to Denver after his wife gave birth to a boy Wednesday, but may rejoin the team Friday night in Minnesota. Allen has been bothered by a right ankle injury that's kept him out of three of the last five games.

Denver's Marcus Camby missed his third straight game with a fractured right finger on his shooting hand. With Nene out as well with a right knee injury, the Nuggets gave Jamal Sampson his third career start. He finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

Denver used its fourth different lineup in four games since Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith were suspended for their roles in a brawl against the New York Knicks on Dec. 16. Denver is 3-1 without Anthony and Smith.

The fact Karl's milestone win came against a Seattle team that ran him off after the 1997-98 season didn't make it all the more sweet. Karl said he no longer has any resentment toward the franchise he helped lead to the NBA finals in 1996.

"I'm just kind of humbled by the opportunity to win 800 games," Karl said.

Karl's first win was Nov. 15, 1984, against Atlanta when he was coaching Cleveland. He'd started the season 0-9 and never thought he'd reach this type of accomplishment.

"When I first started, I thought 250 (games) would be great," he said. "I thought 250 and you'd retire into a college job and coach into the sunset."

Notes:@ Sonics F Rashard Lewis missed his third game since having surgery on his right hand. He injured a tendon against Dallas on Dec. 20. ... Karl was 384-150 in 6 1/2 seasons with the Sonics. ... Chris Wilcox received his second technical for arguing a call with 18.3 seconds left in the third quarter and was ejected. He finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
