Especially for bootstrapping startups with limited time and resources, wrong hires can be an incredibly costly mistake to rectify and detrimental to a company's culture and overall productivity. Here are 4 hiring practices to help assimilate a winning team early on:
1. Align culture with goals
In the early-stages, culture or the company's system of values is often initially defined by the actions of the co-founders. If you yourself value speed and execution at all costs, just make sure that that's the type of culture that will get your startup where it needs to go.
2. Hire people smarter than you
No founder is perfect. It's important to recognize and play to your strengths, while finding qualified talent to supplement your weaknesses and protect your flank.
3. Create a diverse team
Different perspectives help produce different ideas and dynamism, while mitigating the possibility of group think.
4. Be meticulous with every step
We've come across founders, even at the Series C stage that are still involved in every single hiring decision. Doing a startup is a race against time, whether that's in term of competitors, funding, or technological trends. Hire slow, fire fast--but be careful and deliberate in both.
