Parliament is where national issues are debated and policies take shape. Next month, several young Singaporeans will get their chance to try this in the Singapore Model Parliament! They will be playing the roles of MPs from ruling party and opposition, as well as NCMPs and NMPs, to draft, debate and vote on mock Bills.

Singapore Parliamentary debates tend to be less theatrical than in some other countries, which is as it should be. So it is good to see young Singaporeans taking an interest in our legislature and how laws are passed. It certainly helps that for the first time the SMP is being held in Parliament House, for an ‘authentic’ experience. :)

Parliament Should Conclude 1MDB and RM2.6 billion “donation” Investigations Before Debating TPPA

The PAC investigation into 1MDB must be concluded first before the debate on Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) is allowed in Parliament.

It is imperative that the articles in the TPPA which was released by the governments of USA, New Zealand and also here in Malaysia in particular Chapter 26 on Transparency and Anti-Corruption demands immediate action by all countries in TPPA be a guide here.

In spite of TPPA, Malaysia must adhere to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and 2007 APEC Conduct Principles for Public Officials specifically the UNCAC Chapter III defining all forms of passive bribery, trading in influence, abuse of function, illicit enrichment, private sector bribery and embezzlement, and the concealment of illicit assets and ready to enforce Chapter V that allows for corruption and illicit enrichment Asset Recovery worldwide.

Therefore, I will file a motion in Parliament that both the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) investigations on 1MDB and Malaysian Anti Corruption Council (MACC) investigations on RM2.6 billion purported donation for the 13th General Election be concluded first before debating on TPPA.

These issues are at utmost importance, as they are and will be affecting Malaysians everywhere. I certainly are hoping the the speaker will allow this motion to proceed and debated on. The parliament must not become merely a rubber stamp to legitimise everything that the government is doing, without considering the larger impact those decisions will have on the rakyat.

There is no way that Malaysia could even begin to debate the TPPA, if we haven’t even begun to make our way to solve the biggest crisis of confidence that the Malaysian Government ever faced.
