The film is based on the 2016 New York Times Magazine article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare," which describes Robert Bilott's case against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont after they contaminated a town with unregulated chemicals.

But for the real Rob Bilott, the work of taking the industry to court is far from over. In October 2018, the lawyer filed a new lawsuit against several companies, including 3M, Arkema, and Chemours, a manufacturer spun off from DuPont in 2015. That ongoing case is seeking class action status, and was initially brought on behalf of Kevin Hardwick, a firefighting veteran of 40 years who used fire-suppression foams and firefighting equipment containing a class of chemicals known as PFAS, or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFOA is one type of PFAS chemical).

PFAS chemicals are used in products ranging from waterproof jackets to shaving cream, and they can leach into water supplies in areas where they are disposed of or used in fire suppression (in particular on military bases, where they have been used for years). According to Bilott’s complaint, studies currently suggest that PFAS is present in the blood of around 99% of Americans. The class of chemicals has broadly been linked to immune system disruption, while PFOA specifically has been found to be associated with cancers and other diseases. Bilott’s newest lawsuit, as with his prior cases, alleges that these companies knew for decades that PFAS chemicals, specifically PFOA, could be linked to serious health problems, and that they still assured the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other U.S. government regulators that PFAS exposures were harmless.

「穹頂之下的空氣污染，沒有人可以當旁觀者」：空汙除影響心肺外 研究發現也會增加慢性腎臟病風險
　
近來空氣污染愈來愈受到大家重視，根據統計台灣人接觸到的 PM2.5 約是美國人的兩倍；另一方面空氣污染確實對人體有很多影響，最直接的就是造成呼吸系統疾病。但近來的研究發現，不僅僅是呼吸系統，連『腎臟功能』也會受到空氣污染影響！
　
▶來自【台灣】的研究報告
■PM2.5 會造成慢性腎臟病患更快的腎功能下降
在2017、2018年都有台灣當地的研究報告指出，接觸污染空氣愈多，慢性腎臟病的機率會提高、腎功能的下降速度也愈快。在AJKD( American Journal of Kidney Diseases)期刊中有一篇「中國醫藥大學附設醫院」研究團隊的文章，此篇文章是針對已是慢性腎臟病患者所做的空氣污染和腎功能變化之研究。
　
▶「中國醫藥大學附設醫院」的研究報告指出
「中國醫藥大學附設醫院」的研究報告最後收案了六千多位慢性腎臟病患，統計每人每年接觸到的 PM2.5 量。研究發現，PM2.5 會造成慢性腎臟病患更快的腎功能下降，而且接觸的量愈大危害便愈大。【註1】
　
▶來自【中國】的研究報告
■空氣汙染也可能會增加慢性腎臟病的風險
空氣汙染會增加人們罹患心臟病和肺部疾病的風險已是眾所皆知，中國北京大學的研究人員分析了47,000多名中國成年人的調查數據，並根據衛星信息估算他們居住地這2年來的空汙情形，研究表示，空氣汙染也可能會增加慢性腎臟病的風險。
　
他們發現有10.8%的參與者患有慢性腎臟疾病，空氣中平均每立方公尺如果增加了10微克的懸浮微粒，罹患慢性腎臟病的機率就升高1.3倍，此研究【註2】刊登在《美國腎臟病學會雜誌》（ Journal of the American Society of Nephrology）【註3】。
　
▶為何空氣污染會造成腎功能下降?
目前的機轉不明，但可能跟氧化壓力、細胞內皮受損或發炎反應造成腎臟的傷害有關。這謎題仍需後續的研究來解答。另外針對空氣污染的研究大都以PM2.5暴露量為主，但造成腎功能惡化的主因是PM2.5或是空氣中其他的污染物還不太清楚。
　
▶避免腎臟功能惡化
以往我們會建議病人要適當飲水、避免來路不明的中／草樂、避免濫用止痛藥、控制好三高疾病、戒煙、保持良好飲食習慣等來控制慢性腎臟病。但隨著愈來愈多研究指出空氣污染可能和腎功能惡化有關係，之後也要提醒患者注意空氣污染的問題。
　
大環境問題未解之前，只能自已注意空氣品質。在空氣品質不好的地方最好戴上醫療級口罩（能隔絕部分的空氣污染）、在長時間工作或休息的空間使用空氣清淨機、或是搬到空氣品質相對良好的地區居住。【註1】
　
▶細懸浮微粒空氣污染會造成所有人的健康危害，尤其是已經有氣喘的兒童，更容易受害。
由於文明的進步，全世界疾病負擔已經由傳染性疾病，轉變為非傳染性疾病。非傳染性疾病發生的原因，與我們所處的環境息息相關。根據世界衛生組織(WHO)的報告，全世界五歲以下兒童的死亡，居然有高達四分之一的原因，是由於不健康和不安全的環境！
　
■五種最主要的環境問題，依序是：
1.不乾淨的飲用水
2.室內空氣污染
3.室外空氣污染
4.鉛中毒
5.氣候變遷
　
在台灣我們有乾淨的自來水，也沒有在室內使用煤炭，因此最大的環境健康風險，應該就是室外空氣污染。
　
▶什麼是細懸浮微粒？
目前全世界包括台灣與東亞，最重要的空氣污染物質，就是「細懸浮微粒」，或翻譯為「氣膠」。懸浮微粒的英文是particulate matter (PM)，這些懸浮粒子的直徑(粒徑)越小，對人體的健康危害就越大。當粒徑小於2.5x10-6公尺，或2.5微米(2.5μM)，就稱為細懸浮微粒(英文簡寫為PM2.5)。
　
PM2.5的主要來源為各種重工業燃燒的石化原料，包括石化業，火力發電，鋼鐵業等；也包括汽機車的廢氣排放。這些PM2.5可以攜帶各種重金屬或硫化物、氮化物等，長驅直入肺的最深部---肺泡，穿過肺泡微血管後進入全身血液循環，引起全身性的發炎反應。
　
▶PM2.5對人體健康有哪些影響呢？
主要分為「長期效應」與「短期效應」兩部份：
■長期效應：
在歐美國家已經有很多的長時間(數年到十幾年)的世代研究，最經典的有兩篇，分別是發表於1993年的哈佛六城市研究，與Pop等人利用美國五十五萬人的資料庫，在1995年發表的論文。Pop等人在2002年，又將此資料重新分析，得到的結論如下：PM2.5濃度每增加10-μg/m3，就會增加全死因4%，心血管疾病(包括心絞痛、心肌梗塞與腦中風)死因6%，與肺癌死亡8%，而且此效應沒有閥值，因此PM2.5的濃度，越低越好。
　
■短期效應：
是指當某一天PM2.5突然上升，則在當天，以及隨後的幾天到一個月，就會造成健康效應，包括心血管疾病、慢性肺病惡化，與氣喘的急性發作。因此WHO建議PM2.5的日均值要 < 25 μg/m3，年均值則要 < 10 μg/m3。
　
PM2.5對於健康的影響，因人而異。「易受感族群」包括：已知有心血管疾病，肺部疾病，兒童，孕婦，與老人。對於兒童健康的影響有：早產，低體重兒，氣喘的發病率與嚴重度。
　
相關的研究已經非常多，包括台灣也有許多學者的研究。台大公共衛生學院曾研究PM2.5與兒童氣喘關係發現，當PM2.5空污惡化時，兒童氣喘急性發做的機會就增加，尤其是某些帶有特定基因的特殊體質兒童，更容易受到影響。其實早從胎兒開始就受到PM2.5的影響。
　
研究顯示當孕婦在懷孕過程中暴露在PM2.5的空污之下，新生兒在出生之後到2歲內，得到異位性疾病(包括氣喘、鼻過敏、異位性皮膚炎)的機會，就會增加。而根據許多研究也顯示，空氣污染嚴重的地區，小朋友氣喘的致病率就會提高，這也可以說明氣喘的盛行率在台灣逐年上升的原因。此外若已知有氣喘的病患，在空氣污染嚴重的時候，氣喘的急性發作機會就會上升。
　
▶當PM2.5污染嚴重時，我們要做的依序為
1. 外出時不要做劇烈運動。
2. 外出時不要做任何運動。
3. 完全避免外出。若不得以必須外出，則建議要戴口罩，在車內使用車內空氣清淨機。
此外根據研究，當室外空污嚴重時，室內PM2.5與室外濃度相當，因此要緊閉門窗，並且用有HEPA的空氣清淨機【註4】。當然最根本的方式，還是應努力降低PM2.5的排放。【註5】
