🎗Can hobbies have negative effects?
Yes. I think if you spend too much time on your hobbies, it can affect other aspects of your life. For example, if one of your hobbies is playing games, and you spend hours playing Plants vs. Zombies or Angry Birds, then you will have little time for your studies and your social life. Another example is if you love watching movies, and after a hard day at work, instead of doing exercise, you spend all evening watching your favourite films, which is really harmful to your health. So, I think whether a hobby has negative effects or not depends on how we spend time doing it.

🎗What effects do you think humans have on wild animals?
I think human activities have great impacts on wildlife. First, we are destroying their habitats by burning or clearing forests for agriculture or tourism. Thousands of wild animals have died, and some species have become extinct because of habitat destruction. Second, lots of wild animals are suffering because of illegal hunting and poaching. For example, we can see many videos or pictures about rhinos losing their horns, wild elephants losing their tusks or leopards being killed for their fur.

🎗What effects does new technology have on employment?
I think the effects of technology on employment are both negative and positive. In terms of the positive, thousands of jobs have been created, and many people have benefited from it, such as web developers, web designers or IT engineers. Therefore, it has helped improve their living standards. However, lots of people, especially those who do manual work, are faced with unemployment because their work has been replaced by machines or modern technological devices.

Tôi nghĩ rằng những tác động của công nghệ đối với việc làm vừa mang tính tiêu cực vừa tích cực. 🎗What effects has modern technology had on the way food is produced?
I think technological advances have great impacts on food production. Millions of tonnes of genetically modified foods are produced every day. These foods are more resistant to diseases than foods produced in a traditional way. And thanks to breeding technologies, some plant species have been saved from extinction. But we also need to think about the negative effects of technology on food production. These days, the overuse of chemical pesticides and fertilizers is one of the main reasons for the increase in cancer and other fatal health problems.

Tôi nghĩ rằng những tiến bộ công nghệ có tác động lớn đến sản xuất thực phẩm. Hàng triệu tấn thực phẩm biến đổi gen được sản xuất mỗi ngày. 🎗What effects can watching television have on children?
I think that watching TV can have both positive and negative effects on children. By watching educational TV programmes, such as the Discovery Channel or BBC’s Planet Earth, children can learn more about the world they live in. Watching TV can also help them develop their imagination and creativity, which are essential skills for their future careers. However, if they spend too much time watching TV, they will have less time for their studies, and this could affect their academic results. Also, sitting for too long in front of the screen is harmful to their health.

Việc xem truyền hình có những ảnh hưởng gì đối với trẻ em?
Tôi nghĩ rằng xem TV có thể có cả tác động tích cực và tiêu cực đến trẻ em. A new school year has started. Many parents are excited that their children can return to school to learn. However, our job as parents isn't over. With all of the problems and challenges our world has faced over the past year and half, we parents should question the sufficiency of our modern education system to equip our children for a turbulent and unpredictable future. In this video I share a few important things that every parents should teach their children. Because of a school's environment, methodology, goals, and organizational limitations, will a child who simply "gets schooled," without any further training, be able to to adjust to an ever changing, an increasingly technological, an increasingly globalized world and future? 【Bridging The Digital Divide For Elderly | 疫情下長者數碼經驗】

Under the pandemic, digitalisation has accelerated and become part of our everyday life. For the elderly, how can they adopted to these new challenges?

The routine services to the elderly has been disrupted during the pandemic. The elderly have to encounter unprecedented difficulties in their ordinary life, from Covid-testing, vaccination, regular medical appointments, or even access to daily necessities. In light of this drastic changes, how should our elderly react and how the digital technologies could help them to cope with these issues?

We and Solis Strategy are co-organising a webinar on 6 August 2021. We have invited speakers from AlipayHK, Facebook, Senior Citizen Home Safety Association and the medical sector, to discuss the real-life problems the elderly faced during the pandemic and share their thoughts on how technology could help everyone in this difficult situation.

This pre-recorded webinar will be posted on our social media platform. We hope this would help the community to understand the improvements technology can possibly bring to us all.

Following the series 6 of Yayasan Pillar Friday Food Basket program to lessen the burden of city poor, we went down and donated basic necessities to the needy in Kampung Semariang Batu and also studied other basic problems faced by them on a daily basis. Commonly found are broken down houses with water pouring down to the houses during rain and failure of application for help from relevant government agencies. Commonly found also are children who stop going to school at their early ages and kids involved in drugs and theft.

One of the ways Yayasan Pillar helps the city poor is through its #KongsiBersedekaH program. The objective of #KongsiBersedekaH is to get community to engage in sharing the arduous burden faced by city poor families on a daily basis. If you wish to help lighten their burden, please don't hesitate to donate to lessen the daily PAIN faced by city poor. ?

For the upcoming program of City Poor & Students Drop-Out, #NoEducationWhatFuture, we also focus on teen-age children who neglect the importance of education and skip their classes regularly. Their future will impact the society in the coming future, so this issue shouldn't be overlooked and will be covered in our upcoming video.

Welcome again to Yayasan Pillar Shared Giving or #KongsiBersedekah program.
This is our 5th series where we cover more city poor families and houses in Semariang area, specifically this time in kpg sg midin.

This time we met and chatted with a 12 years old boy named Fikri, son to Romie and a brother to Wardina aged 15.
As the mother was out working when we visited their house, we caught up with their 12 year old son.
We handed out food package under our Shared Giving program and interestingly found out from the brother that his sister Wardina has not been going to classes regularly for a year.
Reason given was she had no means of getting to school.
One very disturbing fact is the condition this family and many other families here found themselves in.
Everyway you turn outside their houses, under their houses, by the roadside, and open spaces are rubbish dump.
Children play and eat among heaps of rubbish.
Their houses are like stinking pits with little room to breathe or move.

We also included in our list of Shared Giving another family because of historical record they maintained, where 4 out of 6 school aged children left school prematurely.
Puan Hasnah's 2 sons and 2 daughters left school before they finished.
When asked why?
The mother simply answered "we gave our children choice to continue schooling or quit and find a job."
"We advised our children to continue study but if they refuse, we would not force them."
This family is considered reasonably ok economically as the father has steady job and earning above RM1000 per month.
They do not fall under the category of city poor in Yayasan Pillar's list.

Another family is a single mother with 2 children.
Puan Norlidah bt Abdullah has a medical case of liver malfunction, therefore cannot work and desperately need financial help.
She is not getting any kind of aid from government agencies as she just didn't know how to follow up again on her application for assistance.
She keeps no record of her application.
Yayasan Pillar handed out Food Baskets to all the families and offer to assist them follow up with government agencies for assistance where they are eligible or where they have been overlooked.

Briefly the problems shackling these families are poverty, poor health, filthy surrounding, broken down houses and the sheer lack of will by parents to ensure children finished their school.
I shudder to think what future these children will have?
Why are these deplorable conditions of city poor still allowed to go on for years?
Whose responsibility?
Parents? Local YB? Or our system?
