Marriage: A Type of the Union Between Jesus and the Church
“In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word; seeing your pure behavior in fear. Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing; but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious. For this is how the holy women before, who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands: as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are, if you do well, and are not put in fear by any terror. You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered.” (1 Peter 3:1-7 WEB)
Subjecting yourself to your husband doesn’t mean that you can’t have a discussion.
Discuss and tell your husband your advice, thoughts and concerns, but trust him to make the final decision.
Whatever he chooses, he will have to bear full responsibility for the consequences just as he has the full authority to make a decision.
When you behave like this, not quarrelsome and submitting for Jesus’ sake, your pure behavior will convict the heart of a husband who has backslidden from God’s ways.
Ladies, your inward beauty (character) is far more important and attractive than your outward beauty.
The opposite of a gentle and quiet spirit which is very precious to God is a proud and contentious spirit.
Just as believers should humbly submit to Jesus, so wives should submit to their husbands because marriage is a type of this union between Jesus and the church.
Feminism has taken things too far. Instead of championing for women to be treated well and cared for loving by men, extreme feminism stirs women up to rebel against male leadership.
Men and women are created for different roles to fulfill—it’s not about which gender is better.
Just by biology, it is obvious that man is made stronger to go out and work to provide for the family, whereas women have the unique ability to bear children and nurse them—they are blessed with the role of motherhood and to rule over household matters.
Neither gender should aim to exalt itself over the other or try to jump roles—they should just focus on fulfilling their own respective roles.
Sarah called Abraham “lord”. I believe she wasn’t forced to. Abraham didn’t tell her to call him that. She did it of her own accord in obedience to God and fully embraced her role of womanhood.
She’s a blessed, stellar example for women of God, blessed with renewal of physical beauty to reflect her precious inward beauty.
Husbands, give your wife honor—respect her views, feelings and give her first priority—be willing to sacrifice yourself for her.
Give in to her whenever possible and treat her like a precious gem.
A husband who mistreats his wife, such as abusing her or treating her like trash will hinder himself in prayers (it’s not God hindering it)—his own conscience will accuse him and make him feel unworthy to be in God’s presence or to receive any blessings from God.
The resulting unbelief makes his prayers ineffective—this is self-sabotage.
Both male and female believers are children of God and joint-heirs with Christ—in eternity, women won’t have to subject themselves to husbands anymore.
If you did poorly as a husband and your wife kept submitting to you for the Lord’s sake, her eternal rewards will be greater than yours and she may even have authority over you as a leader in Christ’s Millennial kingdom.
It’s pointless to compare which gender is better. Just focus on being the best you can in the gender God created you as, and you’ll be richly rewarded by Jesus.
