《打破學習迷思,好好來說英文》
As a successful adult, you are highly intelligent. However, you may have lots of negative beliefs about your ability to learn English. These are some common negative beliefs I have observed from my students:
⚡️ Speaking English is challenging.
⚡️ Iʼm not good at English.
⚡️ Iʼm nervous while speaking English.
⚡️ I must speak English perfectly every time.
⚡️ I canʼt make any mistakes.
⚡️ There is only one correct answer.
⚡️ I must memorize and follow all grammar rules.
🤷🏻♂️ Have you ever wondered where these beliefs came from? For most people, these beliefs were created in school. Nevertheless, when I taught small children around the age of 6 to 10, there were only a few children who believe these things. As a result, the majority of the students were able to learn English without fear. They believed that English was fun because I had developed a variety of games to engage them in each lesson. Therefore, the children believed that speaking English was interesting. They never worried about making mistakes, and they didn’t feel nervous at all. Moreover, in my class, they also learned English with a native speaker. Most of the children in my class gradually learned to speak with nearly perfect grammar, yet they never studied any grammar rules.
🤦🏻♂️ Unfortunately, in junior high school, senior high school, and university, most students learn new negative beliefs. There are many elements in regards to tests that force the students to memorize a great number of vocabulary words, and they are asked to follow the certain grammar rules. Students gradually learn to believe that there is only one right answer for every question. They learn to fear mistakes. In school, students are embarrassed if they make mistakes. That’s why they fear speaking. By the time they are adults, most English speakers have many negative beliefs about speaking English. These beliefs destroy their confidence and motivation, so most English learners feel stressed and anxious. To easily speak English, you must destroy these negative beliefs! Tell yourself every day: These beliefs are wrong! Please forget all of them.
