“My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous. And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.” (1 John 2:1-2 WEB)
The apostle John was writing the words above to believers, not to unbelievers. You can see that he used the term of endearment “my little children”—those believers were saved through his ministry.
Whoever thinks they will completely stop sinning after being saved is deluded or in denial. As long as we live in this body of flesh, sin in the flesh will produce all sorts of thoughts and desires that lust against the Holy Spirit.
In moments of weakness, we may listen to the flesh and end up sinning. But take heart that whenever you fall into temptation, you are still in right standing with God. You don’t have to use good works as a means of atonement for your sins.
Jesus Christ is your Counselor (in Greek: Paraklétos) which also means defense lawyer. He assures you that you are still righteous, and the marks in His hands and feet are the evidences of this truth.
The passage above is very clear: God does not want you to sin, but if you fall into sin, Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Our sin debt has been perfectly paid thanks to the shedding of Jesus’ precious blood which far outweighs the sins of the world.
Condemning and threatening people that they can lose their salvation or fall out of right standing with God does not reform them. That is just nullifying Christ’s work at the cross.
It is the revelation of how clean you already are in Christ that gives you the strength to easily pick yourself up and move on like a mighty soldier in the Lord’s army.
