Welcome back! This week's #rachealanswers is a question from a mama about mixed feeding methods.
QUESTION:
My baby will start eating in a month time. Even now, she has shown interest in eating. Hence the chewing of her pillows, blankets, her hands and other people's hands. May I know, what do you think of puree (spoon feed) and BLW? Is it ok to do both at the same time?
--
ANSWER:
Hi mama, what an awesome milestone! Starting my little one on solids was really one of my favorite parts of motherhood and she is still such a foodie till this day!
The short answer to your question from a professional standpoint is no. With baby-led weaning (BLW), you are teaching your little one to chew before swallowing and with puree, you’re teaching your little one to just swallow. While people still do it, it isn’t recommended to mix both methods as if your little one is used to just swallowing without chewing, she might just swallow a chunk of food whole and choke (but if your child is BLW they still get an opportunity for puree like textures like applesauce, mashed potatoes, etc. It's just the idea that they eat whatever you would normally eat in whatever form you would normally eat minus the salt and that it's "texture" safe)
I would pick one method and stick with it. With BLW you go from large pieces to small and for traditional weaning (purees) you go from small to big. I love BLW because it teaches your little one a huge appreciation for food, to listen to her body, to really learn about textures and what food looks like, to independently feed herself and build important fine and gross motor skills.
Having said that, there really is no right or wrong. A fed baby is best. Examine your lifestyle and choose what works best for your family and your child as no baby is the same. Just enjoy the process and the magic that is your teeny tiny discovering all the little things for the first time, the tartness of a cherry, the tang of a lemon, the sweetness of a mango, the crunch of a puff, the cold cold cold of a sorbet!
Motherhood is hard enough by itself, don't let comparison or the voices in your head steal your joy!

For our Halloween playdate, I created a process art space for the little ones to go wild (without the clean-up!). I threw in a variety of materials like markers, coloring pencils, different size crayons, stamps, washi tape, stickers, paper, gluesticks, etc.
There was no "end product" but oh what a joy it was to watch them create!
***
WHAT IS PROCESS ART? :
***
Process art is the open-ended "creative" process of making whereas product art is about the "masterpiece" at the end.
While different situations might call for different types of support and learning, your child gains a tremendous amount of skills through process art including:
***
fine motor skills | gross motor skills | coordination | sensory exploration | literacy | math | science | language | art history | creativity | art techniques | risk-taking | spatial reasoning | self-expression
***
While learning to listen and follow is an inherent skill to master, research has shown that toddlers learn and develop emotionally, socially, and cognitively far more through process art than product art.
A good way to tell if the craft is process-driven or product-driven - does it look perfect or are you not really able to tell what it is? If you have a little toddler and absolutely can't decipher what they just "made", you're on the right track!
***
A great tip? Don't ask them what it is as it might be very obvious to them. Instead, ask them to tell you about their work. Lots of open-ended questions, exploring, and basically allowing them the space to lead, create, and have fun fun fun!

Let us take the kids outside to reduce their energy.
Make them do some outdoor playground and water activities.
Is it a good idea?
Even if it will cause my kid to get wounded or get hurt?
Mommy is not worried at all. Because mommy has adhesive plaster. It is waterproof, dirtproof and germproof for wounds.
Many parents are worried about their kids will be constantly hurt. Do not worry and take them outside to have fun and play.
The Importance of Free Play
It allows the kids to use their creativity, cooperation, problem solving skills and resilience.
It also develops their imagination, social skills, leadership, fine and gross motor skills and flexibility.
Free Play encourages the kids to interact with nature and the world around them. It also helps the kids conquer their fears and build their confidence.
#ToughLove
This kind of love is a tough love.
We love to take good care of our kids and with that, We need to give them a chance to do such outdoor activities that they love.
So, if ever they fall off the ground or get wounded?
Do not worry. Just cover the wound with a good brand of plaster and allow them to continue to play.
