Here's a part of a question I got today: "Even though I can understand some of what is being said, I cant come up with words by myself.... I’m so frustrated and almost given up". I love answering your questions on Tumblr, and this one is quite often asked.
Here are my tips:
1. IT TAKES A LONG TIME
First of all, please remember that language learning takes years! It’s a lifelong journey. There’s always an inital gap between knowing words and having them in your arsenal to use upfront without needing to think too much about them. And that’s OK! You’ll get there. Getting all the words in your long term memory takes time.
2. STUDY RELEVANT VOCABULARY FIRST
What you can do is to keep studying words but be sure to make sentences with them that are useful to your daily life. Using abstract example sentences that you can’t relate to or won’t use isn’t helpful, so study and speak about content you find interesting. Your content must be relevant to your interests. It helps to have a partner or a diary you can talk/write to about your daily life, hobbies and interests so you’re constantly using and being reminded of relevant words.
3. YOUR MINDSET MATTERS
Because you’re telling yourself that you are “frustrated and almost giving up”, you already have a negative mindset surrounding your specific target language. You can have all the perfect study methods but if your mindset is not in the right place, you won’t make progress. Here’s a popular video I made about the right mindset to have when learning a language.
4. FIND SOMEONE TO HELP
You might find also benefit in getting an italki tutor. I felt the same way about Chinese for years and only after I forced myself out of my comfort zone to speak with a tutor who I knew was there to help and not judge me, did my Chinese speaking improve. I took lessons for about 2 months and now I’m more confident to talk with friends who can help me (for free lol)
