Look who came to visit! "It's like we are having a staycation right, Mama? Woohoo!"
The first birth experience usually affects the subsequent ones, doesn't it? For me, I gave birth to the big girl in a small town called Karlskrona in Sweden, where the hubby was posted for naval training. We didn't have to pay for the stay other than a small admin fee, we had a huge private ward with two beds - one for me, one for the hubby, the nurses and midwives were friendly and traditional - they used wooden pinard stethoscopes and measuring tapes, I sat on a gym ball instead of lying down, they asked me if I wanted ice cream to relieve the pain instead of mentioning the word epidural, and there was no such thing as a nursery which means our baby girl was with us 24/7 once she came into this world.
All these were precious memories and learning experiences for me, and I cherished that opportunity to witness a different culture that I might not have able to otherwise. So for my subsequent births in Singapore, I requested for my baby to room-in with me every single time, I had the courage and confidence to say no to epidural and I appreciate the comfort and calmness of my ward.
Yup, this is indeed the only 'staycation' we have willingly paid for (our occasional family hotel staycays are sponsored but you do know I work hard for every one of them in return, right?) and I love it because when the baby rooms in with me, it's just me and him/her and that bond we build right from the start is invaluable and irreplaceable.
Sure, the nurses tell me I should just sleep and let them take care of my baby, or that they can supplement with formula so I don't need to breastfeed exclusively, or that I don't need to change soiled diapers and can leave it to them. But, didn't you just say this is my baby? I was taught to be an strong mum with my firstborn - we had to feed, change, burp and even bathe her ourselves at the hospital too, under the guidance of the nurse - and that's how I want it to be for all my kids right from the start.
Treasuring the close bond I have with each of my kids, especially so today. You are my motivation to persevere. Love you, my babies! ❤
P.S. These two were also born right here 8 and 5 years ago. How time flies!

Yrttivaara(小鎮沒有中文名字)是一個更北部的小鎮。
Kiruna(基律納)是更更北邊的城鎮。

📷: Icehotel. Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. January, 2012.
The big girl said "Mama, my teacher was telling my class about a hotel in Sweden that is built entirely out of ice. So cool! I think you mentioned to me about it before, right?"
Yes, my dear baby girl. In fact, you didn't just hear about the Icehotel, you set foot in it when you were two. That's one good thing about technology because the pictures we took and the blog post I wrote will serve as precious, everlasting memories for us.
Here are some fascinating facts about the Icehotel we visited:
- It is the world's first ice hotel and sits in the village of Jukkasjärvi in northern Sweden, 17km from Kiruna.
- Spanning over 6,000 sqm, it is said to be the biggest hotel of ice and snow in the world.
- The Icehotel only exists between December and April, and has been listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Sweden.
- It is rebuilt each year from scratch by ice builders and artists from around the world. Thus, each room is one of a kind and the architecture of the hotel changes every year.
- The hotel is completely made out of natural ice from Torne River, one of Sweden’s national rivers and last untouched waters. When the art and parts of the hotel melt, the water returns to its source.
- The indoor temperature is set on a constant -5°C. We were told guests could not bring in anything with liquid (but to keep them in the common toilet which is warm) as they would freeze.
- There are 55 cold rooms consisting of Deluxe Suites, Art Suites and Ice Rooms.
- Everything, including the chairs, the beds, the furniture, the decorations, the thick walls, the floors, the ceiling, is made out of ice and snow! Besides the rooms, there is a ice bar with glasses made of ice and an ice chapel with ice benches too.
That is simply amazing, right?
Did we stay overnight? Nope, we didn't because we thought the cold might be too unbearable for you but we did stay for a few hours to explore every room.
One day, perhaps, we can revisit this beautiful place with your little brother and sister. For now, let's cherish all these priceless memories and hold them dear.

Here are six unmissable experiences you need to try in the Nordic countries. Witness the world's tallest bonfire, take a dip in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon and even visit the official hometown of Santa Claus in Lapland.
What are the greatest football stadiums in the world? Wembley? Old Trafford, San Bernabéu? The Maracanã? It’s all up for debate, but if we’re talking about the most scenic stadium, look no further than the fishing village of Henningsvaer, Norway. This tiny venue with no seats is situated on its very own island, allowing locals to have easy access to the beautiful game. With Henningsvaer having a population of around 500, you won’t have too much trouble joining in the fun. To plan your Norwegian adventure visit: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/nor...
For another impressive Norwegian experience, make your way to the port town of Ålesund to see the world’s tallest bonfire. The bonfire is held every year on Midsummer’s Eve, and is part of Slinningsbalet, a massive yearly festival. Over three months, wooden pallets are stacked on top of each other to create a massive wooden structure which, when set alight, provides a spectacle that can be seen from miles away. Find out more about the town and its history at: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/nor...
The cold never bothered you anyway? Then head 200km North of the Arctic Circle to Jukkasjärvi, Sweden and chill in the world’s first hotel constructed entirely out of ice and snow. Make sure you time your booking, though, as each summer the hotel melts and each winter it’s reconstructed using ice from the neighbouring Torne River, incorporating newly themed suites, sculpted by a different artist every year to create the ultimate winter wonderland. For an even quirkier activity head to the Streymoy, the largest of the Faroe Islands. Here, hundreds of feet above the ocean, sheep are transported every year by a human-pulled cable car in order for them to graze. The sheep are then auctioned off to help support the local community. Plan your Faroe Island trip with Culture Trip here: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/far...
For the most wonderful time of the year head to Rovaniemi in Finland. The capital city of Finnish Lapland is the official hometown of Santa Claus and every year the local post office receives more than half a million Christmas letters from all over the world. Give the elves a hand in deciding who’s been naughty and who’s been nice and then head out on a magical husky safari. Read more: https://theculturetrip.com/europe/fin...
Iceland’s Blue Lagoon should be at the top of your bucket list. The famously milky-blue waters have captivated travellers and contributed to the country’s tourism boom in recent years. The waters are full of mineral salts, healthy algae and a kind of silica mud that contributes to its cloudy blue color as well as being a nourishing tonic for the human skin. A little-known fact is that the lagoon was the accidental result of drilling by the Svartsengi Geothermal Plant. Just took my GOPRO with me during my family trip to Finland to capture some memories/moments. The trip was filmed entirely on the GoPro Hero 5 Black, with the 3-way stick. I'm still new to shooting and editing, so there's still more improvement to be made! Stay tuned for more future traveling vlogs!
