Bodo clothes or Bodo Gesung, is traditional women's clothing Bugis Makassar tribe, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Bodo clothes rectangular, usually short sleeved, which is half the elbow sleeves. Bodo clothes is also recognized as one of the world's oldest fashion.
According to traditional Bugis, every color of clothes worn by women bodo Bugis showing its age or the dignity of the wearer. Clothing is often used for traditional events such as wedding ceremonies. But now, bodo clothes began to be revitalized through other events such as dance competitions or greet the visiting dignitary.
First, bodo clothes can be worn without covering the breast. This had already been noted James Brooke (who later became king of Brunei sultan appointed Sarawak) in 1840 when he visited the Palace of Bone:
"Women [Bugis] wear casuals ... A blade sheath [cover waist] to feet and loose clothing of thin muslin (gauze), showing breasts and chest leluk-dent." Apparently bodo way to wear this still applies in 1930.
Color Meaning
1. Orange : worn by 10-year-old daughter.
2. Orange and red : worn by girls aged 10-14 years.
3. Red : worn by women aged 17-25 years.
4. White : is used by attendants and herbalists.
5. Green : worn by women of nobility.
6. Purple : worn by widows.
