【The Ride Sharing Wars of SEA]
Although "localization" plays a strategic role, ride sharing is inherently a commoditized business. Upwards of 80% of your success will depend on how big of a war chest you have. The more money you have to burn, the more you can spend on subsidies, marketing campaigns, and user acquisition. It's a bloody battle that undercapitalized firms should stay out of. This was the case with Uber in SEA which was working with an arsenal of roughly US$ 700 million, compared to Grab's US$ 4 billion, at the time before they pulled out the region and sold their operations to Grab.
Looking at the two companies' funding histories, Grab currently has Go-Jek outgunned with US$ 6.6 billion raised vs Go-Jek's US$ 3.3 billion. But Grab still has an uphill battle with regards to expanding its other verticals in ID where Go-Jek has long dominated. Go-Jek is currently running the country's most popular digital wallet (half of its users use go-pay), in addition to the world's largest online food delivery operation outside of China. The company has also long framed itself as an everyday super app, where Grab only earlier this year pivoted itself in this direction.
That said, both companies best not rest on their laurels in their home markets. Grab with its giant war chest has come knocking on the front door in ID with no intent of backing down. On the flip side, Go-Jek has employed a more localized and decentralized model for its regional expansion, allowing them to execute and iterate much faster, while leveraging the tech stack of the mothership. It's also worth noting that the people leading Go-Jek's regional expansion are not strangers to the ride-hailing game. In Vietnam, for example, the Go-Viet team is comprised of ex-Uber VN management. Grab can very quickly lose its market leading position in any one of the 5 SEA countries outside of ID if they don't stay focused
Moving forward, Go-Jek will likely remain dominant in ID and Grab in the rest of SEA, but the overall market share in SEA will converge neck-and-neck as consumers embrace the luxury of choice and decision makers push for fair competition. At the end of the day, competition is good for the customer, but also good for the industry in terms of competitive pricing, pushing the ball on innovation, and creating a flawless user experience.
