.
眼見為憑
Translation: @benkongenglish
.
.
Seeing is believing, and only believe seeing
This was my belief.
.
This changed when I learned how to dive.
Seeing doesn’t mean it’s true; the truth may not always be seen
.
My coach said during the first lesson
“Everything in the water looks bigger and closer due to refraction. It’s different from your perception on the ground”
I learnt that everything I see in the water is just an illusion, same as the visual image we see in a mirror.
There’s not another me inside.
It’s just physics.
.
Exploring the underwater world, I got more used to the illusion with every stroke.
I got used to the distance between my hands and the sea anemones when I stretched.
I could easily pick up big and small stones on the sea bank.
Distance, volume, weight, touch - all redefined.
.
When oxygen was used up and we went back to the surface.
At the moment my eyes got above the surface,
I returned to another illusory world where things look smaller, farther.
Even the oxygen bottle suddenly felt like a thousand pounds on my shoulder.
.
I, again, got used to the new distance, volume, weight and touch.
Continued living my life in the illusive world where I was born.
I became less stubborn.
I cared less.

Do you know what I liked most about Lunar New Year as a kid?
Playing “the house”...
Let me explain.
Back when I was living in Hong Kong, everyone would get together once a year for Lunar New Year...
My cousins were there. My cousins’ parents were there. And my parents were there.
We were all just there together - having a good time.
And on Lunar New Year, your parents usually give you a gift called a “red packet”.
Ever heard of one before?
It’s like an envelope, but inside there’s cash you can use on something you really like or want.
We call this cash “lucky money”.
Anyway. As soon as we were given our red packets, I would start my master plan...
I would set up this room full of delicious snacks and drinks.
And I would invite my cousins in.
“Come guys, let’s play a few games together...”
(My cousins loved to play betting games.)
There were card games, dice games, and even games of mahjong.
And you know what the best part of it all was?
That’s right, I was the dealer - I was the house.
The odds were always in my favor.
Now my cousins didn’t really care. Because they just loved eating the snacks and playing the games.
And when they ran out of lucky money, they didn’t really mind either. They could just go enjoy the candies and snacks I had prepared beforehand.
But I’ll always remember...that basically by the time they left my house the next day, they had spent ALL their lucky money with me...
And I did that for quite a few years back in Hong Kong.
Now maybe that wasn’t the best way to start out in business, haha right?
But the greatest part of it all was this:
None of my cousins were even upset.
They actually loved me more afterwards.
Do you know why?
Because I would take all my winnings, and I would use it to buy them the BEST toys I could find for their birthdays.
And you know what I learnt from doing that?
There really is more pleasure in giving than there is in receiving.
I realized that even though winning it all felt nice...spending it all on my cousins felt even better.
Making them smile and feel appreciated was just such a great feeling.
And it’s an attitude I’ve taken into business with me too.
I believe…
It’s Not All About The Money
I’m fortunate I learned this lesson early on.
I’ve met so many people that are more focused on what they have in their bank account than on the people that love them and are standing right in front of them.
But they’re missing the point.
It’s not about the money — it’s about what you can do with it.
It’s about the freedom that comes with it. And it’s about the people you can help with it.
And I’m not the only one that sees wealth this way…
Bill Gates donates billions to life-saving causes.
And Warren Buffett plans to give away 99% of his wealth when he passes away.
So here's a question for you...
Don’t you think that people like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet — people that already have it all — would probably know a thing or two about what’s really most important in life?
And if it was all about keeping it and hoarding it, wouldn’t they be hoarding it and keeping it all as well?
Yet they don’t. The more they make, the more they give. And the more they give, the more they make.
Something to think about.
