Understanding The Magis’ Three Gifts
“They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew 2:9-11 WEB)
The wise men brought three types of gifts to baby Jesus, and these gifts reveal things about Jesus to us.
Gold is a picture of Jesus’ divinity, telling us that He is God from Heaven.
Frankincense which is very aromatic is a picture of Jesus’ beauty in every way. Physically, morally, and character-wise, He exuded a perfect fragrance.
Myrrh was a spice used for preparing corpses for burial. It tells us Jesus’ mission which was to die for us as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Put the three gifts together and the bright star pointing to where Jesus lay, and you will see a beautiful message: behold, here is the perfect and excellent God from Heaven who came as a baby to die for the sins of the world.
Praise Jesus! He was not just born, but He also died the way He intended. He loved us to the very end and fully purchased our redemption!
