Drum roll…
The Guangdong police force. Why?:
They already police 110 million people in the Guangdong province an extra 7.5 million is a 6.8% increase in their workload. A 7% work load increase is pretty feasible at least in the short term.
Shenzhen at least (don’t know about the rest) has pretty low crime. Therefore officers can be diverted south.
They already speak Cantonese and therefore can be understood by much of the population and can understand what the people they’re policing are saying.
Guangdong is already fairly developed so it’s not a case of boonies policing city slickers. It’s city slickers policing city slickers.
I can’t think of any other group that is a better cultural or linguistic fit.
So who is the other Candidate?
Ethnic Hakka people. There’s a minority group in Hong Kong called Hakka people. They are invisible for the most part because they all learned to speak Cantonese. It’s when you’re in some northern HK town and somebody starts talking. It’s not quite Mandarin it’s not Cantonese either… just different. I met one in hospital who hadn’t learned to speak Cantonese.
Loads of them seem to live in small villages and this makes them fairly chill people away from the hussle and bustle of the cities. I drink with two of them (I always thought they were Cantonese people).
Hakka were Qing mercenaries in the past and were progressive in some aspects (no foot binding).
Again they are a good cultural fit.
They speak, read and write the language (mostly except the old ones… A few weeks ago there was an old woman near a Tin Hau temple… I had no idea what she was saying.
They live in the area already.
What about others?
British/Canadian/American/Australian police? They don’t speak the lingo. Canadians would probably die in the heat too.
American police… you might appreciate the word police brutality a bit more if this were to happen.
All of the above police aren’t nearby. You can commute from Shenzhen into HK. UK/US/Can/Australia not so much.
