EAST 111, WEST 110, at MCI Center (Washington, D.C.)
ATTENDANCE: 20,374
MVP: Allen Iverson
In one of the greatest comebacks in All-Star Game history, the Eastern Conference stormed back from a 21-point deficit to the Western Conference in the game's final nine minutes to claim a 111-110 victory. The game marked the first All-Star Game decided by a single point since 1977, when the West beat the East 125-124.
Sixers guard Allen Iverson took home MVP honors by scoring 15 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter as he weaved through the West's much larger lineup. Nets guard Stephon Marbury played a crucial role in the rally, nailing two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.
Tracy McGrady, who made seven All-Star teams in the 2000s, made his first All-Star appearance as a starter for the East. He finished with just two points. David Robinson wrapped up his All-Star career in this game, finishing with eight points and four rebounds off the West bench in 10 minutes.
Rookie Desmond Mason of the Sonics took home the Slam Dunk Contest crown with a left-handed power jam. Ray Allen of the Bucks became the first Milwaukee player to win an event at All-Star Weekend when he claimed the 3-Point Shootout title. Finally, Timberwolves sharpshooter Wally Szczerbiak had 27 points off the bench to power the Sophomores to a 121-113 win over the Rookies at the Rookie Challenge.

Allen Iverson did not outscore the
Portland Trail Blazers. It only seemed that way.
Iverson scored 36 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to their
10th win in 11 games, 88-60 over the Trail Blazers, who went
more than eight minutes in the second half without a basket.
"I don't consider it a big win. It's just a win," Iverson said.
"At this time of the season, all you want is wins. However
you get them, when you get them, it don't matter. You've just
got to get them."
Iverson made 13-of-23 shots from the field and added four
assists, including a beautiful two-handed backhand pass to Aaron
McKie, whose layup gave Philadelphia a 72-53 lead with 5:57
left in the fourth quarter.
"He really made an effort to penetrate," 76ers coach Larry Brown
said of Iverson. "He got in the gaps. He breaks you down. If
you come over to help, he's finding people."
Eric Snow added 16 points and Derrick Coleman had 11 for the
76ers.
Philadelphia took its first lead, 34-32, on a pair of free
throws by Iverson with 26 seconds left before halftime. Iverson
scored 10 of the Sixers' 21 points in the third quarter as they
built a 55-44 lead and started to pull away.
"I think I'm starting to play a little better," Iverson said.
"I'm getting in a better groove. ... I'm just taking what the
defense is giving me and just playing it hard every game."
The Trail Blazers scored just 28 points in the second half and
did not make a basket for the final 6:47 of the third quarter.
The drought continued until Zach Randolph made a short jumper
1:47 into the final period to get Portland within 57-46.
"It was a very poor offensive game for us," Blazers coach
Maurice Cheeks said. "In a nutshell, we couldn't score the
basketball. They were much, much better than us offensively."
Randolph netted six of his 10 points in the fourth quarter, when
the Blazers were outscored, 33-16.
"The thing that we wanted to do is stop the easy baskets and the
second-chance baskets," Snow said. "They are a team that plays
off energy and they are athletic. When you have a team like
that, you can't give them anything that will give them energy."
Rasheed Wallace led Portland with 17 points and Derek Anderson
added 12. Wallace shot 8-of-17 from the field but missed all
five 3-point attempts.
The teams combined to miss all 14 3-pointers, including 10 by
the Blazers. It was the first time two NBA teams failed to make
a 3-pointer since March 18, 1999, when Minnesota and Vancouver
could not find their shooting strokes.
Portland shot 36 percent (26-of-72) from the field and made only
8-of-18 free throws, including a 1-of-4 performance by Ruben
Patterson.
Late in the fourth quarter, Brown became ill and returned to the
locker room. He told reporters he had a virus.
"How many times are you up 20 on the road?" Brown joked. "Maybe
that's why I got so hot."
In his first start since returning to the 76ers off waivers from
Cleveland, Tyrone Hill had four points and eight rebounds. He
started in place of Kenny Thomas, who missed the game with a
sprained ligament in his right ankle.
The Sixers moved within two games of slumping New Jersey for
first place in the Atlantic Division.
Philadelphia has won five of its last six road games, including
two of three on its five-game western swing. The trip concludes
with games against Seattle and the Los Angeles Lakers.
"It was a good victory for us, especially on the road and
playing here, as talented as they are," Hill said. "It just
shows the character of this team."
Portland slipped back into a virtual tie with Minnesota for
fourth place in the Western Conference. The Blazers, who have
lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak, are
percentage points ahead of the Timberwolves, who have played two
additional games.
After scoring just one point in Wednesday's 98-92 loss to
Phoenix, Scottie Pippen had another off night with four points
and four turnovers.
"Physically, I feel a lot better than I do mentally," Pippen
said. "My knee is bothering me a little bit, but it's no
cop-out to the way we're playing. I think if I can pick up my
play, then I think the team tends to play a lot better. The
last couple of games, I've struggled and we've struggled as a
team."
The Blazers lost for just the second time in the last eight
meetings with the Sixers.

A stunning fourth-quarter comeback led by Allen Iverson. A thrilling final-minute shootout between Stephon Marbury and Kobe Bryant.
The ball in Bryant's hands for the last shot. A pass that no one expected. A last-second miss. A postgame celebration worthy of June.
Yes, it was quite an All-Star Game.
Iverson, Marbury and his Eastern Conference teammates transformed what looked like a blowout loss into an improbable 111-110 victory Sunday in a performance fitting of the 50th anniversary of the game.
"It was like a championship game out there," Dikembe Mutombo said. "I've been in the All-Star Game the last seven years, and I've never seen anything like this."
It was the kind of game that might stop people dismissing the East as far weaker than the West, the kind of game that might make the casual fan appreciate the heart and determination of some of the younger stars trying to seize the spotlight in the post-Jordan era.
Mostly, it was kind of game that any fan of any sport would prefer to see — a riveting one.
Iverson scored 15 of his 25 points in the final nine minutes, and Marbury hit two three-pointers in the final 53 seconds as the East came back from a 21-point deficit.
Bryant, the NBA's leading scorer, could have taken the last shot. Instead, in a shock to everyone sitting in the building and watching on television, he threw a pass that resulted in a last-second miss by Tim Duncan.
"Everybody was saying we couldn't win because of our size. It's not about size. It's about the size of your heart," Iverson said. "Coming into the fourth quarter, we were all sitting on the sidelines saying 'Why not us? Why can't we be the ones to come back from a 19-point deficit (after three quarters) in an All-Star Game?"
