Many people ask me what my favorite part about Taiwan is. For me, it’s an easy answer: Taiwanese Culture. From my first time coming to Taiwan, I was fascinated with the many Temples, captivating religious culture, and mostly the enthusiastic followers. I no longer classify myself under any religion, and by doing, I have allowed myself to look at Taiwanese religious culture in a new light and understanding. It’s beautiful. It’s pure. It’s selfless. Today I made my weekly trip to Lukang and took time to appreciate the Lukang Tian Hou Temple. It’s nice to finally be outside and in an element that makes me excited and gives me the thrill to share my enthusiasm towards Taiwan through film. I won’t call myself a Taoist or devote follower, but I love the principles behind the Mazu religion. I look forward to showing you all my short film of my thoughts towards the Sea Goddess Mazu!
Every year, Mazu (the patron goddess of seafarers) sets off on a pilgrimage from her home at Zhenlan Temple in Taichung’s Dajia District. This is the ...

Homesick in Taiwan | Struggles and Benefits of Leaving America:https://youtu.be/-3TGNMbFGtI
[ENGLISH BELOW]
When I initially moved to Taiwan, I had a three-year plan to move back to the United States. However, upon my first year in Taiwan, I knew that plan would never follow through. Moving abroad is not an easy thing, but after molding yourself through experiences and new life opportunities creating a new home is easy to accomplish. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic I haven’t and my parents moving to Guam, I may not return home for quite some time and have started to miss home. But thinking long about the term “Missing Home” has made me realize that I don’t miss home because I have one here; it’s my friends, family, and Mexican food that I miss.
I have had this video on my hard drive for three years now, not knowing how to edit it and always postponing it. This video is a great way to look back at what matters most to me and see how I have grown and what I have realized and learned while living abroad, a place much different than I grew up. Leaving home, family, culture, religion, or any prized possession is complicated, but they should never hold you down. Home is where you make it; your life should be paved by yourself, with no outside influences. I’ve allowed myself to think through this stage of being homesick to realize that I am happier now and have found my purpose despite the new differences in life.

Happy Eid al-Adha, the Festival of the Sacrifice. Many Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal on this day as a symbolic reminder of the real sacrifice required throughout life. In the United States, Islam is now the third largest religion, after Christianity and Judaism. It is estimated that over 3.5 million Muslims live in the United States, about 1.1 percent of the total U.S. population.
In Taiwan last year, members of Taipei’s Indonesian Muslim community gathered safely outside Taipei Main Station for Eid-al Adha prayers. However, this year the holy day will have to be celebrated from home or online. When pandemic restrictions lift, Muslims living in or visiting Taiwan can take advantage of expanded prayer rooms in public places such as train stations, libraries, and tourist destinations Did you know, in August 2020 Taipei Beitou Health Management Hospital became the second halal-certified medical facility in Taiwan? Every year, Mazu (the patron goddess of seafarers) sets off on a pilgrimage from her home at Zhenlan Temple in Taichung’s Dajia District. This is the biggest Mazu pilgrimage in Taiwan in terms of the number of official participating brigades, or processional teams. It also has the largest number of followers who spontaneously join the procession along the way. The route of the nine-day, eight-night procession follows the path of early immigrants as they spread out across Taiwan. Apart from revisiting historical paths, the procession also strengthens the faith of local believers and helps them gain a deeper understanding of the significant cultural value behind this event. This ancient and elaborate sacrificial rite is a precious cultural asset. In recent years, the scale of the event has grown, becoming a classic example of how folk religion evolves in response to societal changes. In recent years, Dajia’s Mazu Pilgrimage has been named one of the world’s three biggest religious festivals by the Discovery Channel, and UNESCO has included Mazu beliefs and customs on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Having lived in Taiwan for 11 years, I’ve never heard of Jiao or a Rice Dragon. This year at Anxi Temple in Wutiaogang in Taisi in Yunlin, they’re holding the largest celebration in the Taoist religion, a Jiao.
Since this kind of celebration only happens once every 25 years, I’m really lucky to get this chance to see another special part of Taiwanese culture.
Come with me to see this big festival at Anxi Temple and learn more about “Jiao”.
