I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

แต่ถ้าย้อนกลับไปในประเทศฝรั่งเศสในปี 1749
การอ่านหนังสือบางเล่มกลับกลายเป็นสิ่งต้องห้าม
สมัยนั้น มีหนังสือเล่มหนึ่งชื่อว่า Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers ได้ถูกตีพิมพ์ให้คนทั่วไปมีโอกาสเข้าถึงจนก่อให้เกิดการพัฒนาทั้งทักษะและความคิดครั้งใหญ่
แต่ Encyclopédie กลับถูกสั่งแบนทั้งห้ามอ่าน ห้ามจัดจำหน่าย และห้ามครอบครอง

ที่ชื่อว่า Cyclopædia: or, An Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences
มาแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาฝรั่งเศสเพื่อวางจำหน่ายในประเทศ
โดยหนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นสารานุกรมรวบรวมบทความเกี่ยวกับวิทยาศาสตร์และศิลปะ
เขาจึงได้จ้างนักเขียนที่ชื่อว่า Denis Diderot มาทำหน้าที่ในการแปลหนังสือ
ร่วมมือกับนักคณิตศาสตร์ชื่อว่า Jean Le Rond d'Alembert
ต้องบอกว่าช่วงเวลานั้น รัฐมักปิดกั้นความรู้และความคิดของชนชั้นล่าง
ขณะเดียวกันกลับส่งเสริมบารมีของชนชั้นสูง เช่น สถาบันกษัตริย์ ขุนนาง และเหล่านักบวช

หนังสือที่จะทำให้ผู้คนเกิดความรู้และวิธีคิดครั้งใหญ่ขึ้นมา ?
หลังจากเกิดคำถามขึ้นในใจ
Denis Diderot ก็ได้เริ่มเกลี้ยกล่อม Jean Le Rond d'Alembert นักคณิตศาสตร์ที่มาช่วยแปลหนังสือให้เห็นด้วยกับโปรเจกต์ใหม่ของเขาและในที่สุดโปรเจกต์ระดับมหากาฬนี้ก็ได้กำเนิดขึ้น
โดยเป็นการสร้างสารานุกรมที่รวบรวมข้อมูลหลาย ๆ ศาสตร์เข้าด้วยกัน
มีทั้งศาสตร์ด้านศิลปะ วิทยาศาสตร์ และงานฝีมือ ที่มีประโยชน์แก่ผู้คน
รวมถึงแอบแฝงวิธีคิดอย่างมีเหตุมีผล และการตั้งคำถามกับสิ่งต่าง ๆ อยู่เสมอ

เพราะภาระหนักเกินไปและแต่ละคนก็ใช่ว่าจะเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญในทุกด้าน
พวกเขาจึงคัดเลือกและรวบรวมผู้เชี่ยวชาญในแต่ละศาสตร์

Voltaire นักปรัชญาที่มีชื่อเสียงด้านความเฉลียวฉลาด
ระหว่างทำโปรเจกต์นี้เอง Denis ก็ได้แยกตัวออกมาเขียนหนังสือของตัวเองเพิ่ม
อย่าง Philosophical Thoughts, The Skeptic's Walk และ Letter on the Blind
โดยมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการไม่เชื่อในพระเจ้าหรือศาสนาคริสต์ รวมถึงมีการวิพากษ์วิจารณ์อย่างหนัก
ทำให้ Denis Diderot ถูกรัฐลงโทษจำคุกในที่สุด แต่เวลาต่อมาเขาก็ถูกปล่อยตัว

เท่านั้นไม่พอ หนังสือยังมอบมุมมองและวิธีตั้งคำถามเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวบนโลกใบนี้ด้วย
อย่างความเชื่อที่ส่งต่อกันมา เราจะสามารถพิสูจน์ได้อย่างไรว่าจริงหรือเท็จ
รวมถึงแต่ละเรื่องมีความเป็นไปได้มากน้อยแค่ไหน เช่น ทำไมชนชั้นตัวเองต้องอยู่อย่างลำบาก ในขณะที่คนอีกกลุ่มอยู่อย่างสุขสบาย

Chào mọi người, em/mình/chị xin phép được xưng “mình” trong bài đăng này để thuận tiện hơn ạ. Mình đang học lớp 12 và kì thi IELTS (computer-delivered) ngày 21/11/2020 mình có đạt kết quả 8.5 overall (L:9, R:9, W:7.5, S:7.5), mình biết là tuy writing và speaking của mình cũng chưa phải ở ngưỡng tốt lắm nhưng mà mình sẽ chia sẻ một số kinh nghiệm/trải nghiệm của cá nhân trong quá trình học và ôn luyện IELTS ạ.
Trước khi đi vào chi tiết về cách ôn từng dạng thì có nói qua một chút về bản thân, mình học chuyên Anh của THPT Chuyên Ngoại ngữ nên cũng ở trong môi trường đào tạo tốt & có cơ hội tiếp xúc với tiếng anh nhiều. Nhưng mọi người cũng biết dù thế nào thì quan trọng nhất vẫn là nền tảng tốt về ngữ pháp, phát âm đã, sau đó là tích lũy từ vựng. Thế nên trước khi bắt đầu học các dạng IELTS hay luyện đề thì hãy đảm bảo rằng bạn đã "xây móng nhà" đủ chắc nha.
I. READING
Về đề thì mình chủ yếu là luyện trên Mini-ielts với ieltsonlinetest, ngoài ra mình cũng có làm mấy test của Cambridge (mình thấy từ 9-15 là ổn) và làm đủ Road to IELTS (last minute ver) của BC lúc đăng kí thi.
Với các bạn yêu đọc sách thì các bạn nên chọn đọc một vài cuốn sách bản tiếng Anh luôn nhá. Vì hồi lớp 11 mình có dự án reading portfolio trên trường phải đọc với phân tích 1 quyển sách tự chọn nên mình có cơ hội đọc sách bằng tiếng Anh lần đầu (bình thường mình đọc sách tiếng Việt thôi), cái này sẽ giúp mình luyện reading mà vẫn được thư giãn á, chủ yếu là luyện reading comprehension, ngoài ra cũng lụm lặt được vocab/expression, và rất nhiều bài học nữa - mình cho đây là giá trị cốt lõi của việc ôn luyện bằng cách đọc sách á.
Khi làm bài mình không đọc từng câu hỏi, đầu tiên mình chỉ nhìn lướt qua xem DẠNG câu hỏi thoi, nếu có bài ghép tên thì mình sẽ biết đường highlight tên, có bài match heading thì mình sẽ note nội dung chính của đoạn sang bên cạnh ấy => Sau đó mình đọc cả passage một lượt, đọc kĩ luôn => Đọc đến đâu thì lại highlight những thứ trọng yếu đến đó và note nội dung chính ra ngoài để lúc làm bài tiện rà lại => Đọc hết thì mình quay ra làm một lượt câu hỏi, vì câu hỏi sẽ follow sát theo các đoạn nên mình cũng cứ thể mà quay lại dò, đọc & làm. Lí do là vì cá nhân mình không phù hợp lắm với chiến thuật skimming & scanning rồi lọc keyword, mình thấy làm như thế dễ bị bỏ sót nhiều thông tin và có những lúc bị hiểu sai do lỡ context nữa.
Mọi người cố canh thời gian 20 phút một passage nhé, đương nhiên là sẽ có passage 3 thường khó hơn nên xê dịch tí nhưng đừng dành cho bài nào quá nhiều hay quá ít thời gian nha.
II. LISTENING
Cũng như read, lis mình chủ yếu là luyện trên Mini-ielts với ieltsonlinetest, ngoài ra mình cũng có làm mấy test của Cambridge (mình thấy từ 9-15 là ổn) và làm đủ Road to IELTS (last minute ver) của BC lúc đăng kí thi.
Mình có thói quen hay nghe podcast trên Spotify nữa, thường thì là buổi trưa lúc nghỉ ngơi. Những podcast mình hay nghe là: Stuff you should know (của iHeartRadio); Something you should know; BBC Minute, Global News Podcast, 6 Minute English, IELTS Speaking for Success. Ít nghe hơn thì có Freakonomics Radio, Serial Killers…
Mình cũng hay xem video trên youtube nữa, các kênh kiểu Ted-ed, The Infographic show, OverSimplified, Great big story… và ti tỉ các kênh khác. Cứ chọn những kênh có chủ đề bạn thích, không cần nghe rõ từng từ, nhưng nên luyện để nghe nắm được ý và để khi thi nghe đỡ mệt hơn. Hoặc thậm chí bạn cũng có thể xem các TV series trên Netflix nhé, trong quá trình ôn thi mình cày hết 12ss của The Big Bang Theory, vừa nhẹ nhàng giải trí, tạo cảm hứng mà cũng luyện phản xạ nghe tốt nữa đó.
Có nhiều người luyện theo phương pháp vừa nghe vừa take note, rồi thì tăng tốc độ lên 1.25x, cá nhân mình thì mình prefer việc luyện nghe hiểu hơn vì lúc làm bài mình chủ yếu là dựa vào critical thinking và nghe hiểu, vì khi nắm bắt được context thì dù có một vài chỗ bị miss mình vẫn có thể phán đoán có căn cứ được. Đương nhiên là nếu mọi người thấy phương pháp take note với luyện tăng tốc độ phù hợp với bản thân thì mình hoàn toàn ủng hộ áp dụng nhé!
Lúc làm bài và đi thi, mọi người cứ yên tâm là câu hỏi sẽ follow sát đoạn băng nên là đầu tiên bình tĩnh. Khi người ta cho 30s gì đấy để đọc trước thì tranh thủ đọc lướt qua một lượt câu hỏi (và câu trả lời nếu được), điều này sẽ giúp bạn mường tượng được trước là tình huống như thế nào, chủ đề gì.
Đối với các bài điền từ, nhớ gạch chân hoặc note to là mình được điền bao nhiêu từ (ví dụ one word thì ghi số 1, one word and/or a number thì ghi 1/+, nói chung mọi người cứ kí hiệu rõ ràng ra tránh thừa từ). Ngoài ra, lúc đọc lướt câu hỏi, đọc đến đâu ghi cạnh chỗ trống dạng từ cần điền, ví dụ như Npl/Ns (danh từ số nhiều/số ít), place, date, no., name, adv… => Giảm xác suất bị sai những lỗi không đáng có; đồng thời khi nghe vô hình chung bạn cũng sẽ biết mình cần hướng đến cái gì. Kiểu như nếu bạn biết câu này phải điền danh từ, thì khi nghe não sẽ có xu hướng tập trung nghe đến danh từ, rồi chú ý sau động từ (trong trường hợp danh từ đóng chức năng tân ngữ).
Lời khuyên chung cho part 3 và part 4 vẫn là phải thật bình tĩnh. Part 4 hầu như là điền one word, bài nó cũng theo thứ tự trong băng nữa nên nghe đến đâu các bạn ráng hiểu đến đó + prepared trước kiểu "sắp đến chỗ của câu này rồi". Cá nhân mình không chờ cho đến khi nào nghe thấy mấy từ trong câu hỏi rồi mới tập trung, mà sẽ tập trung nghe hết luôn vì nhiều lúc, người ta sẽ không nói y như phần trước ô trống đâu, mà người ta sẽ đưa context vào, mình hiểu thì mình điền được ấy.
⇒ Note chung cho lis-read: Đây chỉ là trải nghiệm của mình thôi nhưng mà… Nếu lúc đầu instinct mạnh mà đang chọn đáp án nào thì sau đó ráng đừng lay động rồi đổi đáp án nhá trừ khi bạn có clue/proof gì chắc chắn là việc đổi mới đúng. Nhiều lúc đổi xong sai liền đó hic. Và với những câu vẫn mông lung chưa biết chọn gì, đừng có để trống mà điền hết nhé, quan trọng là đoán có căn cứ. Luyện đề rất quan trọng, các bạn có thể luyện free tại các trang trên hoặc http://bit.ly/2NuFxGg. Nhưng mà cũng nên kết hợp với các phương thức khác như đọc báo, đọc sách, nghe podcast, xem video… nha siêu hiệu quả đó.
III. WRITING
Writing thực sự mình cũng không luyện nhiều đâu ;;v;; sau khi học hết khóa ở trung tâm mình chỉ làm thêm một số đề nữa thôi. Mình thấy quan trọng vẫn là nên nắm kĩ cách triển khai ý vì lúc đi thi mình cũng không thể biết được vào đề nào, topic gì.
Vốn từ các thứ thì bạn có thể học và chắt lọc theo chủ đề. Bạn có thể học Cambridge Vocabulary for IELTS (Pauline Cullen) hoặc là Oxford Word Skills (có các level khác nhau). Về ý tưởng có thể tham khảo các idea, hình như có tài liệu “IELTS ESSAYS FROM EXAMINERS” là tập hợp của nhiều examiner nổi tiếng mỗi năm, nma lúc mình biết đến thì kiểu còn 1 tuần nữa là thi mất rồi....
Một số cách triển khai ý là:
- Nguyên nhân - hệ quả (thậm chí sau câu hệ quả có thể thêm 1 câu hệ quả nữa vì nhiều trường hợp nó cũng là 1 chuỗi)
- Đầu - thân - tình - tiền: Đây là phương pháp mình được dạy ở IPP IELTS, đại khái là tùy từng đề mà chọn, “đầu” là về knowledge, mình học thêm được những gì; “thân” là về sức khỏe cả thể chất lẫn tinh thần, có lợi hay có hại như thế nào; “tình” là các mối quan hệ, có mở rộng social circle hay không; “tiền” là tiền =)))
- Triển khai từ các perspective khác nhau (ví dụ như cùng 1 chính sách giáo dục thì từ phía học sinh sẽ có những lợi ích/tác hại gì, từ phía giáo viên&nhà trường, từ phía chính phủ như thế nào)

IV. SPEAKING
Mình vốn là đứa rất sợ speaking, chứ chưa bàn đến chuyện nói tốt hay dở, rồi cũng vì sợ nên lúc mình nói trước người khác toàn sợ idea không tốt, đang nói mà phát hiện lỗi sai cái là lại ậm ừ rồi quay lại sửa cho bằng được, timing không tốt…
Mình nhận ra là vì mình chưa tiếp xúc với speaking đủ nhiều, nên cách tốt nhất là hãy luyện phản xạ trả lời, mà phản xạ chỉ có thể luyện được khi nó thành một cái mình làm kiểu hằng ngày á. Cá nhân mình thì mình luyện nói với bạn cùng bàn, tranh thủ giờ ra chơi với cả hẹn nhau ra cà phê, circle k lúc rảnh. Lúc học thì mình luyện theo quyển đề của trung tâm, trước khi thi khoảng 1 tháng mình luyện theo bộ forecast quý của thầy Ngọc Bách, bạn mình nghe mình nói và ngược lại, xong 2 người góp ý cho nhau, như vậy mình vừa có thể trau dồi được thêm nhiều ý tưởng hay, vừa có thể lượm lặt được các từ ngữ, cách nói, grammar phù hợp, quen với nhịp độ của các part, các buổi thực hành hay thi cũng đỡ bỡ ngỡ hơn.
Đối với từ vựng thì mọi người có thể trau dồi thêm collocations theo chủ đề nhé ví dụ như bằng quyển English Collocations In Use của Cambridge, hoặc 2 quyển sách ở trên kia mình giới thiệu cũng có giới thiệu nhiều vocab hữu ích lắm.
Mình thấy là giám khảo sẽ không judge về mặt ý tưởng của bạn đâu, miễn là những câu sau của bạn phải support cho ý tưởng câu đầu, rồi có dẫn chứng relevant & thuyết phục là okay rồi. Khi luyện nói với bạn mình, mình cũng nhận ra rằng cùng 1 câu hỏi thực ra có rất nhiều hướng trả lời vì về ý kiến đâu có thể 10 người giống 10 được, không có đúng hay sai nên đừng quá lo là “ý tưởng của mình có kì không/có đúng không”, mà hãy nghĩ xem “ý tưởng của mình có thể được support bởi những cái gì”. 1 câu dẫn dắt, 1 câu idea, 1 câu triển khai ý, 1 câu ví dụ nếu có thể là okay, và nếu bạn còn idea nữa thì cũng lại triển khai như thế, nhưng tránh lan man rồi lạc đề; và nếu bạn thấy idea 2 khó triển khai thì mình nghĩ bạn có thể dừng thì mình nghĩ các bạn nên dừng ở idea 1 và ráng triển khai kỹ idea này là ổn.
=> Note chung cho speaking-writing: Hãy nắm kĩ cấu trúc, trả lời đúng trọng tâm đề, đủ (không thiếu không thừa, không cụt lủn không lan man), thuyết phục là đã ăn điểm task response rồi. Ngữ pháp mọi người cần chắc nền tảng, khéo léo kết hợp sử dụng các thì thời, khi vững rồi mới cố gắng kết hợp các câu phức để tăng band. Nhưng đừng câu nào cũng câu phức, nghe rất lan man mà dễ bị sai. Nên một câu đơn rồi một câu phức xen kẽ, cũng không có nghĩa là cứ phải 1 câu này 1 câu kia nhé, mọi người linh động trong khả năng của mình thôi. Từ vựng trau dồi qua cả một quá trình, cố gắng biến nó thành active vocab để mình có thể sử dụng nó một cách chắc chắn & hiệu quả trong bài thi cũng như đời sống thay vì chỉ ghi list và học thuộc. Điểm coherence & cohesion không chỉ phụ thuộc vào linking words mà nó còn là liên kết ý nữa (các câu có relevant và support nhau không), ngoài ra còn cả việc sự dụng các đại từ this/that/such thinking…
V. FAQ:
(Nếu có câu hỏi nào chưa có trong mục này mọi người có thể comment nhé, mình sẽ giải đáp trong khả năng)
1. Nếu chưa biết bắt đầu từ đâu thì nên làm thế nào?
Mình nghĩ là cũng có thể hiểu được thôi không chỉ IELTS nói riêng mà còn là việc học ngoại ngữ nói chung. Có lẽ bạn nên nắm rõ mình đang ở band nào, mình aim band nào, band đó cần yêu cầu gì, rồi dần dần hoàn thiện để đáp ứng yêu cầu đó. Nếu các bạn mới bắt đầu tiếp xúc với tiếng anh hoặc đang ở band thấp thì điều quan trọng nhất chính là học thật chắc ngữ pháp, phát âm, từ vựng nhé, và học từ các nguồn uy tín thôi, nếu cần thì mọi người có thể inbox mình sẽ chỉ.
Và có lẽ thay vì luyện quá nhiều material khác nhau cho cùng 1 nội dung/phân môn thì bạn nên chọn lọc 1-2 đầu sách hoặc các course, website có resource phù hợp. Rồi tập trung học theo đó ôn theo đó thôi để tránh nhọc quá.
2. Có phải dùng những từ vựng “cao cấp” thì sẽ được band cao không?
Có lẽ đây là assumption của rất nhiều người nhưng mà thực sự không phải như vậy đâu mọi người ạ. Nói đúng hơn, những từ vựng ăn điểm là những từ vựng dùng chuẩn context + less common hơn 1 chút. Nhưng yếu tố tiên quyết vẫn là phải đúng context nhé mọi người, thực sự nếu mọi người tra là synonym có thể ra những từ lạ hoắc xong trông cũng sang sang đấy, nhìn còn dài ngoằng mấy âm tiết cơ nhưng mọi người cứ áp dụng bừa mà không biết mình đã dùng sai rồi, mà examiner có khi còn không cả biết từ mình dùng là gì cơ ấy… Thế là trừ điểm thôi--- Mình không bảo mọi người là cứ những từ dễ dễ an toàn mà tương nhé, quan trọng là mình muốn khuyến khích việc bạn nắm rõ rằng mình đang dùng từ gì. Chứ nhiều lúc "đao to búa lớn" không bằng một từ trông thì có vẻ hơi "lom dom" nhưng được dùng on-point đâu ạ.
3. Học từ vựng thế nào mới hiệu quả?
Về việc nhớ từ thì mình thấy điều quan trọng nhất chính là đừng học theo kiểu học thuộc, mà cần học với mindset là mình cần biến nó thành active vocab và có thể áp dụng nó linh động trong bài viết và đời sống. Mình cần hiểu đúng usage của nó và có thể recall nó thường xuyên chứ không phải chỉ khi thi cử ấy.
Và mình nghĩ đừng chỉ viết từ ra sổ không rồi học thuộc một list mà cứ lăn xả đi tra đi xem trên oxford, cambridge dictionary, mò mẫm xem nó có nhiều nét nghĩa không, có nghĩa nào hay ho thú vị không, xem qua ví dụ nữa để thấm nhuần được cách dùng, ngữ cảnh, tự đặt ví dụ cũng tốt nhưng ví dụ phải đúng nhé ạ. Tra xong trên oxford, cambridge rồi thì có thể lên ozdic để tra collocation nữa siêu hữu dụng trong IELTS.
Mọi người cũng không cần học quá quá quá nhiều từ vựng đâu, mình nghĩ là thay vì học 5000 từ random thì học theo chủ đề, mỗi chủ đề một số lượng từ nhất định để có thể áp dụng linh hoạt khi làm bài là được.
Ngoài ra thì cũng không nên ghi chép rồi học trong 1 ngày, mà cần sự lặp lại, lặp lại không phải chỉ bằng cách đọc lại mà có thể là xem lại video xung quanh chủ đề đó, tự đặt câu, tự hỏi và trả lời rồi áp thử từ vựng đó vào.
4. Mình soạn sample speaking trước rồi học thuộc template được không?
Mình ôn theo forecast và thực ra mình hoàn toàn có đủ thời gian để prepare câu trả lời mẫu, nhưng mà mình không làm thế. Đơn giản là tại vì thực sự bạn không thể nhớ nổi 50 đề cho 1 quý, mỗi đề part 2 + vài câu part 3 đâu á... Hơn nữa, việc học thuộc câu hỏi sẽ khiến mình khi nói mất tự nhiên, và chẳng may nếu quên từ nào một cái là gần như đơ luôn, examiner được trained để để ý những cái nhỏ nhặt đó nên it’s a big no-no nha. Thay vào đó mình nghĩ bạn nên vạch ra hướng tư duy thì hơn, như vậy cũng đỡ bỡ ngỡ khi bị hỏi những câu mà không có trong forecast hoặc là các câu hỏi examiner improvise dựa vào câu trả lời trước đó của bạn.
5. Sao mình làm bao nhiêu đề một tuần mà không thấy tiến triển gì cả?
Đừng stress bản thân quá phản tác dụng bự đó mọi người, thay vì ráng làm 2 đề một ngày nửa buổi trưa nửa buổi chiều thì cứ dành đúng 1 buổi làm 1 đề thôi r ngâm cứu thật kỹ xem đề đó mình sai chỗ nào cần khắc phục chỗ nào, đọc kĩ transcript nếu có, xem mình nghe hụt ở đâu, vì sao lại nghe sai (do mình không biết cách phát âm của từ đó hay lỡ context…). Thỉnh thoảng mọi người cũng nên thư giãn nữa chứ không nên đâm đâu ngày nào cũng làm đề dễ nản.

✨Soufflé Pancake✨
9 mini pancakes
:: Ingredients ::
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites
9 tsp all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp milk
3 tbsp sugar
:: Instructions ::
1. Combine egg yolks, baking powder, vanilla extract, milk & all purpose flour into a bowl and mix them well
2. Whisk egg whites until it turn frothy & pale white. Then slowly add sugar. Continue whisking until it become glossy & firm.
3. Add two scoops of egg white into the egg yolk mixture and mix them.
4. Transfer the egg yolk mixture into the whisked egg white & gently fold mixtures together.
5. Heat up a non stick pan over low heat. Lightly brush oil using a paper towel to rub it around.
6. Scoop batter onto the pan. Add a few spoons of water & cover them with a lid. Let it cook for around 5-6 minutes.
7. Gently flip over then pancakes & repeat the process. Cook for another 4-5 minutes.
8. Add whatever toppings you love and ENJOY~
