Now, the reason D-Day happened is because Germany seized France. The Chinese have just seized Hong Kong. Do you see any parallels between what Germany did to France to what China did and is continuing to do to Hong Kong?
Pompeo回答:
The United States is ever mindful that when we engage in conflict, we do so as a final straw, when there is no other option to protect freedom. We know, too, that authoritarian regimes have a tendency towards seeking increased land and power and to expand the scope of their tyranny. And it’s certainly the case that the promises that the Chinese Communist Party had made in their treaty with the United Kingdom – that they broke when they made the decision to deny Hong Kong people the freedoms that they had been promised – were similar to some of the promises that were broken back in the days when Germany advanced against the rest of Europe.
On D-Day the United States invaded Normandy to restore Western civilization. Do you see the United States doing something similar in Hong Kong to restore democracy?
Pompeo回答:
Now remember, remember in Hong Kong our task – what the President said on Friday we were going to do – is we were going to go make clear our expectation that China change its course, that it return to the status quo ex ante where the freedom that they had promised to the people of Hong Kong would be provided to them. And in the event that they do not – if they pass the national security law that we think they may pass, or if they delay or cancel the elections that are scheduled for September of this year – they will have made a fundamental breach not to just the United States but on their promises to the United Kingdom and the world. And the tools that the President laid out on Friday that we will use to respond will be engaged, and they’ll be executed. That will be the beginning of how we begin to think about what we will do to do our best to create maximal freedom for the people of Hong Kong and ensure that the people of America continue to remain free and secure.

Yesterday, the COVID-19 Taskforce described how we will progressively ease restrictions after the circuit breaker ends on 1 June.
I am sure everyone is looking forward to getting back to normal – sending our kids back to school, re-opening businesses, eating out with friends, and finally being able to visit family and loved ones.
However, we can’t revert to status quo ante. The circuit breaker has worked, and our situation is improving. But the battle against COVID-19 is far from over. That is why we are reopening in gradual phases, with F&B dine-ins only allowed after we are confident that community transmission will stay low. We have seen other countries that have opened up experiencing a resurgence of cases. All it takes is a single infected person to create a new cluster.
We cannot stay closed forever, so we have to get used to a new normal, adjusting our routines to live and work safely despite this global pandemic. Let us continue working together to keep COVID-19 at bay. We will emerge stronger from this experience. – LHL

COVID-19 has forced us to adapt. Industries have been disrupted – some perhaps permanently. Some jobs will disappear.
Tourism and the gig economy have been hard hit. Some of these workers have taken up temporary jobs as safe distancing ambassadors. They have adapted quickly to their new roles.
This has been happening all along, though not so suddenly as now. New industries are constantly emerging, and we must be ready for them. 50 years ago who could have imagined a job as a social media manager, or in biotech?
I said in my May Day speech yesterday (https://go.gov.sg/hm10wr) that we will not go back to status quo ante, even after bringing COVID-19 under control. We are determined to help companies prepare for the new operating environment, and to retrain workers for the new jobs available. We can’t save every job, but we will look after every worker, and their families too.
I wish everyone a safe and meaningful Labour Day. – LHL
