My first-ever involvement in a film ad! Watching Freeflow Productions work was phenomenal (they’re the same people behind the viral IKEA “bookbook” ad earlier this year!). Seriously, the level of meticulous detail and sheer amount of work that went into every single millisecond of this film is mind-blowing.
It was so cool to work (and jam!) with The Silver Strings in the flesh. Hearing all their stories on set about the heyday of Singapore music really had me reading up on the 60s/70s scene in more detail… I mean, we’ve all heard it before — the government banned jukebox saloons, tea dances, long hair, rock n roll music, etc. They also increased entertainment taxes for live bands by 100% at nightclubs, essentially wiping out the music scene and forcing them underground. What I never realised, though, was just how successful Singaporean music was before all that happened — we had a huge local and regional fan-base, exceptional record sales, and even bands on international top-tens. (You can probably find out more from Museum of Independent Music, Singapore!). Most sources I’ve consulted say we’re not even a fraction of the way to our former glory… but given how exciting our music scene is today and how many obstacles it has survived, that can only mean much greater things to come. <3
This project was a huge eye-opener for me in so many ways — an homage to our rich and glorious past. So much respect and love for Ros, Vanessa, Janice & the whole production team, Rennie for the great sound, and Aarika / the rest of the cast and crew!
