駅北側の富山港線は、2006年2月まではJR西日本の富山港線でしたが、LRT化により2006年4月に富山ライトレールとして開業し、富山駅北口に路面電車として乗り入れを開始しました。
南側は富山地鉄富山軌道線として最盛期は約11kmの路線網を有していましたが、1984年以降は南富山駅前-富山駅前-大学前の1路線6.4kmのみとなっていました。
2007年頃に策定された富山市のコンパクトシティ構想に基づき、2009年12月には富山都心線丸の内-西町間0.9kmが開業し、環状線の運行を開始しました。
北陸新幹線が開業した2015年3月には、富山駅前の交差点から富山駅停留所までの0.1kmの新線が開業し、富山駅構内への乗り入れが開始されました。
2019年3月、あいの風とやま鉄道線下り線ホームの高架化完了により在来線地上線路は全て無くなり、約1年後に南北接続が開業となりました。
北側の富山ライトレールは、2019年8月に富山駅北停留所が50m北側に移動、2020年2月に富山地方鉄道に吸収合併され、1943年以来77年ぶりに富山地鉄の路線となりました。
南北接続開業後の富山港線は、岩瀬浜-南富山駅(1本/時)、岩瀬浜-富山大学前(1本/時)、岩瀬浜-環状線-岩瀬浜(2本/時)の3系統が基本的に運行されています。
運行車両は、9000形セントラム、T100形サントラム、TLR0600形ポートラムの低床車両のみで、7000形、8000形は乗り入れません。
元富山ライトレールのポートラムが市内中心部を走行したり、セントラム、サントラムが富山港線を走行するシーンを見ることが出来るようになりました。
