【Founders: What's Your Why?】
Occasionally, when meeting with founders, we're often asked about what exactly we look for when investing in startups.
Is it a killer product? A scalable business model? User stickiness? Track record of success? Large addressable market?
Those are all certainly core facets of an attractive deal, albeit present across varying degrees. But one of the most important considerations that we spend a great deal of time trying to understand is the founder's Heart (among our core framework of Heart, Head, Hand), and more specifically the "why."
If COVID-19 is any indication, unpredictability and volatility can completely derail a startup at any given time. Although an outlier event in many respects, the outbreak is still but a microcosm compared to all the trials and tribulations that are bound to arise along a founder's journey.
If it's not a worldwide pandemic, then it's a co-founder abruptly quitting, a term sheet falling through, an inhibiting regulation, a competitor poaching top talent, a Google or Amazon entering your space, a loss of a key account, or perhaps a failed relationship or marriage--essentially a myriad of constant challenges that seem to do nothing but put your mental resolve and willpower to the test.
In tumultuous times, it's then important to always go back to your underlying reason for starting the company. As famously preached by the German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche, "He who has a why to live can bear almost any how."
For some, it's to scratch their own itch or solve their own problem. For others, it's to create a better world for their offspring and impact loved ones and those around them.
Regardless, the "why" is what will give meaning to founders' efforts in the face of adversity, allowing them to ride out rough patches and generate the conviction to see things through to the end.
Global restrictions on movement and trade have created unprecedented economic and operational challenges for companies across the value chain. Founders, use this time as an opportunity to revisit your why, clarify and affirm your reasons for starting a business. In this way, you'll have a stronger and more fortified foundation to capitalize on the upswing when things start to recover.

.
Nuremberg is a middle age old town surrounded by old city wall and medieval buildings. It was a major Nazi base and was used to site of huge Nazi Party conventions since 1927. Due to its importance, it was later selected by US and its allies to hold trials against German officials for war crimes.
.
Today, the location of rally has become a huge museum for Nazi documentation located outside city center (with around 20 minutes tram ride). Unfortunately, we only had a half day tour in this lovely city and, hence, we didn't get a chance to visit the museum.
.
Note: The reason we only had a half day tour is because we made full potential of Bayern ticket's unlimited free local transport access. We were traveling from Salzburg to Munich. After settling down at hotel, we decided to use the ticket to travel to an additional city. Well. It was a bit rush, but it saved a lot!

🔸{ The Girl With No Hand } 🔸
The subway train’s door opened in front of me. I walked towards an empty chair. It would be only 3 stops to Singapore Botanic Garden.
As I settled into the seat, I glanced to my right: a man stood to face a blue trolley.
I saw this every day in Singapore: parents ride the subway with their kids tucked neatly in little trolleys.
But this time, something was different. I drew a deep breath, not knowing what to feel.
The baby girl, around 3-year-old, had no hands. Her tiny arms reminded me of matchsticks or tiny tree trunks that somehow forgot to grow branches.
The skin on her face, even though without wounds, resembled the face of someone who survived a fire accident.
But she didn’t look like she was afraid, or hurt, or sad, or tired. She was dressed in a pink shirt and matching trousers. She smiled at her dad. He was about 30, thin and tall, wore a black t-shirt and simple blue jeans.
They both looked so happy!
The dad squatted down to talk to his baby while she babbled back cheerfully.
With his hands, he caressed the back of her head. He kissed her forehead and nose. She giggled, waved her two arms in circles in the air - with no hands.
Her dad kept talking to her and kissing her. At one point, the baby laughed aloud, like a small bird sings in sunrise.
I felt a lump in my throat and a stirring in my chest.
The most magical thing I saw was how the dad looked at his baby.
He had twinkles in his eyes. He looked at her as if she wasn’t wounded, as if she was perfect in every single way.
When I left the train, my heart aches with the beauty of that encounter.
The girl without hands reached for the one she loved, received kisses, and hold onto hope with more courage than many of us who carry the unimaginable luxury of having 10 fingers.
As I took a slow walk among the old trees of Botanic Garden, the late afternoon sun poured a golden glow on my skin.
I thought: “The sun always shines on me, no matter how crazy or broken or wounded I thought I was.”
The sun shined on me the same way the dad of the girl with no hands looked at his baby.
As if to whisper: “You’re brave. You’re strong. You’re beautiful. And everything is going to be okay.”
I want to look at myself through that eyes too. Even if I have no hands, even if I’m different, even if I get hurt and go through hell and come out on the other side with scars and losses.
Because the way we see ourselves influence the way we show up in life.
If we see ourselves as a poor little victim of life, we’ll blame others, make excuses for ourselves, shrink into a little ball, hidden from the world, waiting to be rescued.
If we see ourselves as the hero of our story - like any good story: full of challenges, trials, triumph, and learning - we’ll crack puzzles, solve problems, fall down, learn, get up, take leaps, keep our heart open for love, and eyes open for beauty.
It’s a choice that defines who we become.
Somewhere in the nights and days at the hospital, I think the dad of the little girl with no hands made that choice.
And I guess he makes that choice again every day, every moment when he looks at his little girl.
Perhaps that’s the choice we can make every time we see ourselves in the mirror.

人誰無過是老生常談,但事實確是如此啊。
It is clichéd but true that no one is perfect.
幸福不只是一場場順利美滿,當中也有試煉。
The road to happiness is not all rainbows and unicorns / rainbows and butterflies. There are bound to be trials.
只願一切快平息,回歸平靜。
I hope that all will be well again soon.

Long time, no longplay! Today, I will be playing Disney's Aladdin for the Sega Genesis/Megadrive. It is certainly one of my favorite games on the system. Playing it again, I can see many more flaws that I overlooked as a child, but I think it's still a technical and artistic marvel.
I played this on Practice difficulty, and I played it on a real Model 1 Sega Genesis on my Toshiba CRT with a 6-button controller, but recorded it simultaneously via an OSSC hooked up to my XCapture-1 capture-card by splitting the signal with a Shinybow distribution-amplifier (SB-3729). I don't know how, but scanlines made their way into the footage. I don't remember enabling them on the OSSC, and my capture-software: VideoKeeper2, doesn't even have options for them. Maybe another effect of shifting parallel dimensions.
I died a lot on the escaping stage, but edited them out. I tried farming lives in the Rug Ride stage, but the game prevented me from doing that. I had some trouble figuring out how to beat the final boss, but eventually I did. I was glad they still gave me the ending, even on the easiest difficulty.
