Did you know that this species of Orchid is Singapore’s National Flower?
On 15 April 1981, Vanda Miss Joaquim was selected as Singapore's National Flower. It was selected from among 40 flowers, out of which 30 were orchids. Among the several varieties of Vanda Miss Joaquim, the variety "Agnes" was chosen in particular for its vibrant colours, hardiness and resilience –qualities that reflect the Singapore spirit.. 🇸🇬
QoTD: “Life gets tough from time to time. When life gets harder, challenge yourself to be stronger. When life is tough, remember you’re tougher.” 💪🏻

Miss Agnes Joaquim, an avid horticulturalist and second-generation Singaporean of Armenian descent, successfully bred the world’s first hybrid orchid in Singapore – the Vanda Miss Joaquim, now our national flower. Her tombstone is in the grounds of the Armenian Church at Hill Street, which was built in 1835.
Vanda Miss Joaquim and the Armenian Church attest to the long ties between Singapore and Armenia. Though small, our Armenian community have left their mark on Singapore history. The Sarkies brothers opened the iconic Raffles Hotel Singapore in 1887, while Catchick Moses co-founded The Straits Times.
I was therefore glad to meet Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan / Նիկոլ Փաշինյան this morning to affirm the warm ties between our countries. We concluded a double taxation agreement, and signed MOUs in tourism, culture and education. We are also cooperating to establish Armenia’s own Botanic Gardens. We look forward to strengthening economic relations through the Eurasian Economic Union-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (EAEUSFTA). I thanked PM Nikol for his support on this, and hope that we can conclude talks soon and sign the FTA this year. – LHL

A hotel with an inviting botanical theme and spacious family rooms? We say "Yay"!
We were at the media preview of the newly rebranded Orchard Rendezvous Hotel, which was formerly known as Orchard Parade Hotel. Specially commissioned for the hotel, a first in Singapore by the Orchid Society of Southeast Asia, the Vanda Orchard Rendezvous is a two-tone, new hybrid strain of orchid which looks really pretty up close!
With 338 rooms which have been refurbished with new interiors, the hotel's design is inspired from its site's history as an old pepper plantation and we are so excited to see that 38 of the rooms are family-friendly rooms that come with bunk beds and kid-friendly amenities too! We even saw rubber duckies in the bathtub, how cute, right?
The exquisite leaf-shaped chandelier, the branch design of the hotel carpetting, the aromatic potpurri that perfumes the rooms and corridors, the garden-like seating area at the lobby which allows for an abundance of natural light, the botanical themed backdrops and wall decorations, and the gorgeous Vanda Orchard Rendezvous for viewing pleasure on Level 6 near the pool - all these and more help to make guests feel close to nature and look forward to taking a respite from the rigours of everyday life.
The kids were especially delighted with our DIY bookmarks and notebook covers which were made with real pressed flowers like the pretty Astrantia. The souvenir we took home with us was a very creative and unique Sprout Pencil, which is the world's first sustainable pencil and has a seed capsule instead of an eraser tip. All you have to do is plant it after you have finished using the pencil and watch it bloom in your garden! Pretty cool, right? Swipe left and check out our stories for more happenings too.
Thanks to @fareasthospitality for having us at the launch and we are so glad we made it despite the heavy downpour!
