MY FIRST MONEY WOUND 💸

I made real money for the first time in 8th grade. I was mad for manga and so were half of my classmates.

In front of our school gate, there was a shop selling manga merchandise. Everyday kids like me drooled over those keychains, badges, and pins.

One day, I had a brilliant idea: why not try to make those keychains myself?

I went to an internet shop, browsed Yahoo images (yes, Yahoo) for artworks of the hottest manga characters, and saved them in my dad’s floppy-disk (yes, floppy-disk).

I had them colored-printed, and then ran to the old uncle who had a “laminating shop” - one rusty machine on the back of his 200-year-old bicycle - to laminate those pictures for cheap.

With my dad’s 2-hole mini puncher, I punched holes to attach keychains on them.

Tada! My products were complete.

The next day, I showed up in class with a dozen of those keychains. I sold everything in one morning.

The following days, my keychains were sold out again. Soon enough, kids from other classes started to hand me their pocket money. Lo and behold, my business had expanded!

One afternoon, I sat in the back of the class with my red kitten wallet, counting money. I had a “boyfriend” at the time and he was sitting next to me. I turned to him beaming:

“Look, how much money I made!”

He did not smile.

Instead, he gave me, my money, and my red kitten wallet a cold look. He grunted:

“Money, money! Now you always think about money! What a girl you are!”

I went silent. I was shocked and then I was ashamed. What he said confused me.

“Maybe I’m really becoming bad…” I wondered.

I stopped making keychains after that.

Now, looking back I think:

“Dude, what a dumb thing to say. You could’ve had chè with me for free, every day after school!”

At the same time, I wonder:

“He was a young boy! What must have he heard from other people to have such a negative view about women making money?!”

Until now, this story and its cultural implications still surprise me.

This is one of the stories that later shaped the way I felt towards money.

It’s 4AM and before I start my weekend with another flurry of work and events, I wanted to post this up over my business page - the page that is open to friends , family as well as strangers alike - to read about not just my business or work related self … but snippets of my private life which I usually keep in a close journal as therapy for me when I need to pen down my musings.

This early morning post is about this decade old drum set.

This electronic drums was something I sought permission to buy from Azmi. I took drum lessons before marrying him, but never had the space to own a set.

But when we moved in together at our home we decided to buy 11 years ago, I coaxed him to agree to it and whilst he hesitated at first - he gave in and took charge looking for one that I could beat the sh*t out of, without causing lawsuits from neighbours (hence the decision to go electronic)

I could use it while I spun music from my DJ decks and it was snug enough to fit into the room which was meant for storage - not knowing God would bless us with more children and a pandemic that would lead us to pivot into creating a livestream studio to sustain our business.

He had told me to sell it off second hand - and I kept coming up with excuses that perhaps the boys would use it someday … or that it was too old and outdated “no one would buy it so best we just keep it”

Truth is?

Letting it go was like letting go of a dream in completing my music lessons which I had put a cork in the bottle upon finding out I was pregnant with Iman.

As time passed on, blessed with more children and different situations that made us have to change business strategies along the way, my music hobby was getting pushed lower down the priority list as more and more items on my “to do list” grew and climbed on top.

My children says I’m not fun anymore “you’re always working mama” and last night, as I went to put Ilon to sleep promising to sit with the older kids for our weekly Friday Family movie nights (a ritual we have started to keep the children’s sanity in check during this gloomy pandemic) , I am devastated as I ended up falling asleep halfway while working and breastfeeding Ilon.

They say you must find balance in life. Work, love and play.

I don’t know how to do that anymore.

How many of you feel that this pandemic has just made you become a work zombie?

Anyone up at this hour?

Shall take a cold shower now. I’ve got a show to run in 6 hours and I’ve not done a flow yet.

1) Back away（後退する、取り下げる）
=================================
　
back awayは後ろへ下がることを意味し、特に恐怖から後退りすることを表します。例えば、ハイキング中に突然蛇が現れて後ろへ下がるような状況で使います。その他、計画や提案から手を引いたり、取り下げる意味もあります。
　
＜例文＞
　
Watch out! Back away. There’s a snake right there.
（危ない！後ろに下がって。そこに蛇がいるよ。）
　
For some reason, he backed away from the deal.
（なぜか、彼は取引から手を引きました。）
　
You have to take advantage of this opportunity. Don’t back away from it.
（このチャンスを生かさないと。逃げ腰になっちゃダメだよ。）

2) Uncool（ダサい、格好悪い）
=================================
　
uncoolはnot coolと同じ意味になり、「ダサい」や「格好悪い」を表します。一般的にはnot coolが使われますが、人や状況によってはuncoolが使われることもあります。
　
＜例文＞
　
Some people think watching anime is uncool, but I don’t think so. I love it.
（アニメを見るのは格好悪いって言う人がいるけど、私はそう思わない。私はアニメが大好き。）
　
Baggy jeans used to be a thing, but apparently it’s uncool now.
（昔はダボダボのジーンズが流行ってたけど、今はダサいらしい。）
　
Don’t litter. That’s not cool. Pick up your trash.
（ポイ捨てしないで。ポイ捨てはカッコ悪いよ。ゴミを拾って。）

3) Somewhat（少し）
=================================
　
Somewhatは「多少」や「やや」を意味します。意味はa littleと似ており、微妙な程度を表すときに使います。例えば、「私はちょっとびっくりしています」は“I’m somewhat surprised.”と表します。また、今日の会話でクレイが言った“I’m somewhat of a nerd.”は、「私はちょっとオタクです」を意味します。一般的に、somewhatの後には形容詞が来ますが、somewhat ofで表現をする場合は名詞が続きます。
　
＜例文＞
　
The situation is somewhat getting better.
（状況は多少良くなってきています。）
　
The design is somewhat different from what I had in mind.
（デザインは私がイメージしていたものとは若干異なります。）
　
I’m somewhat of a homebody. I like staying at home and watching movies.
（私はどちらかというと家で過ごすのが好きなタイプです。家で映画を見るのが好きです。）

4) It’s no big deal（大したことない）
=================================
　
big dealは「大事なこと」や「重大なこと」を意味することから、“It’s no big deal.”は「大したことないよ」や「気にしないで」といった意味になります。問題やミスが起こった時に「大したことじゃないよ」と言ったり、相手から必要以上に感謝されたり謝られた時に「どうってことないよ」と返答するような場面で使います。日常会話では、It’sを省いてシンプルに“No big deal.”と言うのも一般的です。また、“It’s not a big deal.”と表現することもありますが、意味は全く同じです。
　
＜例文＞
　
You don’t have to apologize. It’s no big deal. Don’t worry about it.
（謝らなくていいよ。大したことじゃないから。心配しないで。）
　
You forgot your wallet? No big deal. I’ll get it.
（財布を忘れたの？気にしないで。僕がおごるよ。）
　
I don’t know why he’s so upset. It’s not a big deal.
（彼がなぜ腹を立てているのか分からない。大したことじゃないのに。）

5) Nightmare（悪夢）
=================================
　
nightmareは「悪夢」を意味します。“I had a nightmare last night.”のように、実際に悪い夢を見たことを表す時に使うだけでなく、悪夢のような出来事や経験を表す時にもこの表現を使うことができます。例えば、海外旅行中に立て続けに発生したトラブルを「悪夢のようだった」と表現する時は、“It was a nightmare.”と言います。
　
＜例文＞
　
I had a terrible nightmare last night. I couldn’t go back to sleep.
（昨晩はひどい悪夢を見て、そのまま眠れませんでした。）
　
My business trip to New York was a nightmare. Everything went wrong.
（ニューヨーク出張は悪夢だった。すべてがうまくいかなかった。）
　
Something serious happening to their kid is every parents’ worst nightmare.

Play Date went viral and sudden rose in popularity recently becasue of TikTok.

It's saying the girl is nothing more than a friend to someone who seems to care very little about her, even though they get together often. She outwardly proclaims she is just as uncommitted as he is, and how she's tired of all the games she has to play to stay with such uncommitted guy. She wishes she didn’t care about how little he communicates but she can't stop thinking about him. In the final moments of the song, she admits she does care about him and does value their "play date".
