2021 is the first time in 99-year history that the Wong Tai Sin Temple cancels the Lunar New Year inaugural incense burning.
Every year, an average of 50,000 to 70,000 worshippers flock to the Wong Tai Sin temple on the Lunar New Year Eve and offer the first incense sticks 頭炷香 to Wong Tai Sin, a Taoist deities, on the new year (the Lunar New Year starts at 11:00pm!) to hope for a better year. This is how the Wong Tai Sin temple is like every year on the Lunar New Year Eve!
This year’s arrangements: The temple will open from 7am to 4.30pm on Lunar New Year eve.
From the first day to the 14th day of Lunar New Year: 7:30am - 6pm
On the 15the day of the Lunar New Year:
7:30am - 9pm
The temple will also operate at its half capacity, with a maximum of 1000 people allowed in the temple.
