雖然牛仔帽最早可追溯到13世紀
當時蒙古騎馬時戴的高帽寬帽沿
但真正影響版型的其實是源自墨西哥的Vaqueros
在1865年由John B. Stetson發展出來，在當時又稱 「Boss of the plains」

的確牛仔帽衣照帽頂及帽沿塑形方式可以分為好幾種
早期也都由動物皮毛製作到後來以羊毛為主甚至慢慢的以其他合成纖維
