兩年，我從台灣應屆畢業生到矽谷臉書數據工程師
文：杜威👉 我在《追不到夢想就創一個！》書裡的回饋故事

「你好！我叫杜威，因為看到你有想舉辦一個見面會，如果還需要人手，我很樂意幫忙！」就這樣，與 Anya Cheng 矽谷阿雅 認識至今兩年半的時間，是我人生變化最快速的時候。當時的我，剛結束與清華大學材料大學加碩士六年的因緣，正在服兵役。閒暇時間，想說去幫忙一下，聽聽看這位矽谷人的分享，畢竟那是我夢想之地。

我在阿雅身上學到了三件事，對我影響甚鉅。👇

1️⃣ 她激勵我「選擇勇敢」。

分享會結束後，我跟阿雅說我想當據分析師，一週後她突然聯繫我：「你有沒有興趣到 eBay 實習？」我當下愣住了，心中充滿問號──「數據分析師……她忘記我是材料系畢業的嗎？」、「eBay?……我沒經驗可以嗎？ 」除了對自我能力的懷疑之外，更是這突如其來的訊息，硬是把目前規劃的道路闢出一條岔路來。

當時快要到十一月，正是申請美國學校最緊張的時刻，儘管如此，當時的我選擇了勇敢，硬著頭皮完成了兩輪面試，也成了我人生第一次與外國人面試的經驗。當時得到的反饋是：「是個不錯的候選人，但缺乏分析的經驗。」聽到的瞬間，其實不是很訝異，畢竟依照我的背景，如果我是面試官，可能也不會選擇我自己。

不過，我還是很幸運的拿到了這個實習，馬上安排退伍後的隔天，買了一張單程機票就去了上海。有一天，我問了當時的主管 Robert Petrescu 為何會選我？他說雖然我沒什麼分析經驗，不過他感覺的出來我可以學，也知道我是來學習的。我也領悟到，公司不是要找一個滿分的人，展現真誠、熱情跟學習能力或許會比硬實力更能信服人。❤️

開工後的頭一個月，我都是零貢獻，天天上網看谷歌分析的線上課程，沒在上課的時候，就像跟屁蟲一樣黏著Robert觀摩他，我們兩個會坐在同一個電腦前一整個下午，而我就看著他做分析，不斷提問。有時候他陷入深思，會食指往我這一比，要我先不要吵。🤫

那段時間，我利用假日的時間繼續申請學校，平日就是不斷的吸收，想盡我所能的跟上他的腳步。記得有一次我待的特別晚，整層樓只剩下我一個人，突然警衛把燈關了，我才驚覺已經快要半夜。總而言之，我能學習到 eBay 如何開發產品、AB 測試，甚至有機會到羅馬尼亞🇷🇴出差吃甜到爆炸的帕帕納西（Papanași），都因為當時我勇敢地選擇了那個會讓我害怕的路，因為它充滿著未知，卻也充滿著機會。

2️⃣ 阿雅鼓勵我「不要害怕尋求幫助」。

離開 eBay 後，我在卡內基美隆攻讀第二個碩士，當時第二個學期正要結束，但我卻身在水深火熱當中，因為畢業條件之一是必須要有暑期實習的經驗，而當時已經五月中，我還沒有找到任何實習。心情很挫折，畢竟已經找了五個月的實習，投了上百家公司都石沉大海。當下突然有一個感覺──我與其坐在這裡等死，還不如到現場問個清楚。🔥

隔天就訂了從匹茲堡到紐約的夜班車，借住在一個叔叔位於皇后區法拉盛的家裡。時間只剩一個月，於是，我每天的行程，就是早上坐快一個小時的車到曼哈頓市區，白天待在公共工作空間找實習，晚上參加各種 Meetup 活動，對所有遇到的人問實習機會，再坐夜班車回家。

漸漸的，我有點越挫越勇，也或許是走投無路的壓力，我開始對路人問實習，甚至在公司門口等他們下班。曾經攔到一位要參選紐約市第十三區的議員，他還邀請我去參觀他的廣播，另外一次，參加了一個估值十億美元的獨角獸新創技術長分享會，會後便上前跟技術長講話，之後我們一來一往了幾次電子郵件，他可能因為忙碌，就沒了音訊。但我仍沒死心，把他們公司上上下下員工的 Linkedin 都密了一遍，甚至也寄信給了創辦人。

有一天，我心血來潮就跑到他們公司樓下，剛好正對面有一間咖啡廳，而窗邊的位置可以清清楚楚的盯著大門。我就在那坐了一天，心中期許希望我能遇到他，陸陸續續有人下班了，看到有人穿著那間公司的衣服、帽子或手提袋，就上前自我介紹。當然有人理我，也有人不理我，不過最後有位員工，跟我說沒辦法幫忙走掉之後，又走回來告訴我，他們今年因為要顧及成長，沒有計劃要找實習生，我失望的同時，也很開心我獲取了一些消息。最後，因為向阿雅尋求了幫助，聯繫到了一間eBay前員工服務的紐約金融科技公司，六月中順利面試成功，而那邊的實習，又成為我無法忘懷的回憶。

3️⃣ 我在她身上學到「不斷學習，直到達到目標為止」。

在金融科技公司實習的時候，我是唯一一位在幫公司處理數據的人，沒有人能帶我，而學校所學的理論，在業界是另外一回事，我必須從數據工程到數據分析一條龍地去瞭解，並以公司高層的視角去思考該做什麼、該怎麼做，對我來說，無疑是一大挑戰。

不過，也就是在這不斷做中學的循環中，除了瞭解數據工程對公司的重要性，也讓我審視自己的定位。為了能更深入了解數據工程在業界的應用，我聯繫了許多業界的前輩，聽聽他們的經驗，也自掏腰包報名了一個每月要將近四百美金的線上課程，歷時七個月才上完。

實習結束後，因為記取了先前的教訓，回學校的第一天，我就開始尋找正職的工作。最後一個學期，是像宇宙大爆炸ㄧ樣混亂，學分超修，又選修了一門電腦科學系很硬的課，永遠開不完的小組討論，和每個月一直燒錢的線上課程，除了要繼續丟正職工作，又必須花時間準備不同公司的面試。

那段時間，必須很清楚知道什麼才是最重要的事情，而我將 80/20 法則跟報酬遞減理論套用在我的時間上。也就是說，除了最重要的那件事之外，在其他項目上，我必須用20％的時間，讓他有80%的效果，之後所花時間得到的報酬對我其實是遞減的，便不需要多花時間。

我在十月分的時候，收到臉書人資的聯繫，我知道這是我最重要的事情，也開始了長達三個月的面試過程。由於數據工程的領域我在暑假才真正接觸到，每次安排面試時間的時候，我都盡量排到最晚，讓我有足夠的時間可以準備。

這個過程我時常想到阿雅的故事，以她的資歷，在面試臉書產品經理的時候，也模擬面試了七十幾次，我更沒有理由可以認為我準備夠了。終於一關一關的到了現場面試，對我來說，是一個很特別的時刻，因為三年前，我曾經想看看矽谷公司有什麼神奇之處，開車來這裡，一走近圍欄向內張望，馬上有個警衛叫住我，便把我趕走。👮‍♀️

三年後，我能踏進去園區裡，一整天無縫的四輪面試，對我來說已經是成功了。聖誕節後，我收到了臉書數據工程師的 offer，雖然給了我一個非常難熬的聖誕節，卻也是最棒的聖誕禮物。⛄️ 我希望我的故事可以證明，只要努力去學習，像海綿ㄧ樣吸收，背景真的不重要。給自己足夠的時間，有耐心一步步地走，目標就會越來越近！💪

Vintage Japanese Vending Machines are one of those things and for Steve, it was a first time experience to travel to Saitama Gyoda City to experience a place called Tekken Taro, a Game Center and Vending Machine shop with 40 and 50 year old machines that are still dispensing Ramen, Soba, Udon, Ham Sandwiches and Hamburgers just like they did many many years ago!!! For Steve the experience was awesome and he hopes others will find their way to this terrific place and help support it so it does not disappear from history!
