Yum Cha in Hong Kong can be very chaotic 🥴 but it is always fun!
We visited Lin Heung Kui in Sheung Wan 上環蓮香居 this time for some old dim sums. How do I rate this Yum Cha experience? I will definitely come back again! Chaotic yet organized, that you can experience rushing to the dim sum lady to get dim sums and at the same time, spend some quality time with family, reading newspaper.
👉🏻 Check out our new YouTube video for our FIRST food Vlog at Lin Heung Kui: https://youtu.be/Zd1Trzi3zv4 👈🏻
This is my first time to try some of old dim sums that can hardly find in other Chinese restaurants, including Lotus Paste Bun 蓮蓉包,Jumbo Bun (Yes, that’s 大包!大包整多兩籠 唔怕滯~) and my new favourite dim sums - 金錢雞 (Third photo)! It tastes so so so good with chicken liver 雞膶 on top, and then lard 豬膏 and Char Siu (Barbecue Pork) 叉燒, grilled in Barbecue pork sauce. Each of them has a very different texture and the conclusion is - you need to try金錢雞 (literally means coin chicken) when you visit Lin Heung Kui!
How about other dim sums: https://youtu.be/Zd1Trzi3zv4 👈🏻
Remember to order Lotus Paste Bun 蓮 (Lin) 蓉包, this is a must-have in Lin Heung Kui !
Want a even more chaotic Yim Cha experience? Check out Lin Heung Lau 蓮香樓 in Central 👍🏻

It might be too crowded or even chaotic to have dim sums in Lin Heung Tea Room (蓮香茶室)! But this is how you explore Hong Kong like a local - Rushing to the dim sum cart to get your favourite dim sum before it is gone (𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐩𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨) and share the table with strangers 🤔 #搭枱 (this is a normal practice in Hong Kong when the restaurant is full).
We went there at 3pm (probably too late) and there was not many choices of food. But the good things are - less crowded for photos and we were able to get a seat as soon as we go into the restaurant. We ordered four dim sums, BBQ pork bun 叉燒包, pig stomach with pepper 胡椒豬肚, fish cabbage roll 魚扎and my favourite brown sugar cake 馬拉糕. The brown sugar cake was so popular that we have waited 2 rounds. Luckily the lady promised me that she will reserve one for me ☺️🙈 Sadly, no 蝦餃 shrimp dumplings and Siu Mai 燒賣- the dim sum King and Queen.
Lin Heung Tea House was first founded in GuangZhou in 1889. Two branches were opened in Hong Kong in 1926, one in Mong Kok and the other in Central. The one in Mong Kok was closed and the other one was moved to the current location here on Wellington street in 1980. The restaurant re-opens under a new name, Lin Heung Tea Room on 1 March 2019. Dinner services are no longer available since then. That means no traditional dishes like 八寶鴨 duck with eight treasures and 焗魚腸 baked fish intestines.

Is it fun to have dim sums here at Duen Kee? 係到飲茶好唔好玩? This is exactly what the uncle here asked me.
My answer is.... YES YES YES! Except that I have to wake up at 6am in the morning to get a good seat.
In this self-service restaurant, you need to get your own cutlery, make your own tea (the restaurant is well-known for their mountain water tea) and get your own dim sums! But this is where you can still find uncles showing off their songbirds and lots of traditional dim sums like 銀針粉 Silver Needle Noodles, 大飽 Big bun, 芋角 Taro dumplings, congee with crisps 薄脆 (I haven’t seen them for ages).
Everything looks so delicious here but don’t have much expectation on their taste - acceptable level. There are a wide variety of food here, including tofu pudding 豆腐花 and barbecue pork燒味!
𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬:
Arrive early so you can choose a better seat. We arrived at 7:30am. I prefer table on the 1/F, where you can see uncles showing off their songbirds.
There are limited choices of dim sums at 7:30am. And we finally saw Siu Mai 燒賣 and other well-known dim sums at 8:30am!
If you are driving - the car park was already FULL when we left the restaurant at 9am. Go early!
When the restaurant is full, it is a normal practice in Hong Kong that two groups of people share a table - we call it #搭枱 .
There are so many dim sums that we want to try - but... there’s only two of us and it’s really early! Consider going there with a few friends instead (stay home now and @explore_hongkong when things get better!)
