🚩 New Media Artist Hsin-Chien Huang Leads "Garden Taipei/Formosa: Taiwan Grand Tour" with 22 Taiwan's VR and New Media Artworks to 2021 Ars Electronica Linz in Austria🇦🇹
2021 ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL Ars Electronica has chosen “A New Digital Deal” as its annual theme, centering around the social and cultural transformations under the influence of technology from different countries. Also, it pays attention to changes of “the New Normal” due to the pandemic.
Hsin-Chien Huang, this year’s curator of the “Garden Taipei/Formosa”, resonates the theme with the “Taiwan Grand Tour”, hoping to waken our desire and ability to move freely during the journey via different kinds of media, also make more people see the marvelous results and how hard Taiwan has devoted to technology, culture, tradition, and tradition via international digital platforms. The tour will have become a window between the world and Taiwan.
The scale of this year’s exhibitions has been brought up a notch. Not only did it carry on displaying the VR and AR productions from last year, but the curator Hsin-Chien Huang has collaborated with three other, Hsiao-Yue Tsao, Billy Chang, and Chung-Hsien Chen, to call out many VR directors, new media artists, start-up companies and government institutions to join the project. There are 22 magnificent programs in total, which will be shown in categories such as “Immersive Tour”, “Animated Tour”, “New Media Tour”, “Earth Tour” and “Action Tour” respectively.
“Immersive Tour”, as the first part of the “Taiwan Grand Tour”, viewers can wander among the mountains, oceans, and rivers in the digital world, even outer space! Six scenes inspired by unique Taiwanese landscapes with cultural and biological features will be shared with the audiences, such as “The Starry Sand Beach” (Directed by Hsin-Chien Huang and Nina Barbier), “Moondream Reality-Rebirth”(Directed by Chi-Yen Chiang, Ami Wu), the shuttle VR 360 stereo video of “TAIPOWER D/S ONE.” (Directed by Ghung-I Hung and Shih-Chou Wen), “Floating Childhoods” (Directed by Hakka Public Communication Foundation and Wen-Chieh Chang), “Blue Tears EP1” (Directed by Hsiao-Yue Tsao), and “Samsara” (Directed by Hsin-Chien Huang).
In the “Animated Tour”, viewers can devote themselves to the characters via different programs. Whether it is the abstract or figurative visual style, audiences can experience anxiety and frustration all the way to happiness and growth. Getting rid of this disappointing reality, viewers shall continue the “Taiwan Grand Tour” through their imagination. This program consists of four animations: "Go Go Giwas: Sowing Dream Seeds"(Directed by Vick Wang, Yi-Feng Kao), "My grandmother is an Egg"(Directed by Wu-Ching Chang),"Inside"(Directed by Yu-Ting Hsueh), and "The Wayward Kite"(Directed by Yu-Ting Hsueh).
In the “New Media Tour” program, nine brilliant pieces created by Taiwanese artists will be shared as the relay points for the “Taiwan Grand Tour.” They use video, sound, electronic music, installation, and various new media to explore different topics, such as family, memory, city, society, landscape, and environment. We firmly believe that digital tools can also capture the warmth and emotions in reality. This program consists of nine artworks: "Surrounding Spectrum"(Directed by Hsiu-Ming Wu), "Nanyang Express II : Eternal Wandering and Tropical Pursuing"(Directed by Yi-Chi Lin), "Wave Waves"(Directed by Sio-Pang Hong), "That ・ This"(Directed by Ching-Chuan Hu), "Signal"(Directed by Chin-Hsiang Hu), "Tower of Babel by the sea"(Directed by Wei-Chung Feng), "How to explain love to an iPhone"(Directed by Jie-Huai Yang), "U+617E_v2.∞"(Directed by Jia-Hua Zhan), and "Absence in Presence"(Directed by Ning Tsai).
In the program “Earth Tour”, viewers will participate in a performance art called “Taste Soil”, which intends to rethink the relationship between humans and land by means of “eating.” The program brings together international eminent chefs Andre Chiang, dancer Billy Chang, new media artist Hsin-Chien Huang and Wen-Chieh Chang, fusing Taiwan’s unique traditions and customs with cuisines and dance performances via VR experience. A feast to the eyes and tastebuds awaits.
Looking back at the present time, humans need to take more efficient scientific actions in the digital world to reduce the consumption and pressure of resources and the environment and cope with the impact in the post-pandemic times. Two important technology units in Taiwan make their debut in the “Action Tour”: Miniwiz Co., Ltd. and the Taipei Urban Intelligence Center. The former is devoted to the sustainable development of materials science with digital technology and design, while the latter is the integration of big data and streaming technology to create a new technical model of urban governance. Combing these two, an answer to developing a sustainable society with digital energy is born. During the tour, a new performance art project is inspired by the digital cross-field cooperation for the first time. The Taipei Urban Intelligence Center will join hands with new media artist Chin-Hsiang Hu and the founder of Inwheel Ghung-I Hung, to create a new media artwork “The Weight of Data” by integrating both virtual and physical materials from different domains and sharing data resources.
The brilliant curatorial concept and lineup of the Taiwan Grand Tour have attracted the interest of the officials of the festival and been in the limelight. Therefore, the festival has invited three creators behind the “Earth Tour”: Andre Chiang, Billy Chang, and Hsin-Chien Huang, to an online interview called “Highlight Channel” at 18:00 on September 1 (Taiwan Time). The link will be provided by the official later on. Moreover, Miniwiz Co., Ltd. and the Taipei Urban Intelligence Center are also invited to share their ideas and experiences in an online show called “Home Delivery.”
The theme of the Garden Taipei/ Formosa is presented in a diverse form of performances by combining different fields multiply. The audience can easily follow the step of the “Taiwan Grand Tour” to explore Taiwan’s magnificent local digital creativity and illustrate a new digital landscape unitedly that only belongs to Taiwan. The 2021 Ars Electronica online exhibition will be held from September 8 to 12, 2021. Click the link below to take a sneak peek of this year’s shows.

[Books / 書訊] Guide Michelin, Yann Couvreur, Angelo Musa 米其林評鑑與知名主廚新書 / The Michelin guide, chef Yann Couvreur, and Angelo Musa publish their books (for English, please click "see more")

It seems that every year-end has to be accompanied by wonderful books. Publishers would not miss the great occasion of gifting, neither would the readers. Influential chefs like Yann Couvreur, Angelo Musa and even the Michelin guide choose to publish their work this month.
The diners’ essential companion and the ruthless judge of the restaurants and chefs, the fable red guide publishes their book “M, le grand livre du Michelin” earlier this month. While the capitalized M symbolizes its Bible-like existence, this book does not aim to demystify how the inspectors work, how they rate a restaurant, and how the system operates, but it’s inviting the readers to come along for the great voyage through the French and global culinary patrimony that help shape the “gastronomy” discipline. Portrait of chefs, starred restaurants as well as the most unusual ones, kitchen and food industry operation, local traditions, sourcing of ingredients, legends and stories, etc. are all included in this encyclopedia. Pastries and desserts are not skipped, of course. Master pastry chefs like Pierre Hermé and Cédric Grolet have their own pages. It’s a fantastic book to read and to enjoy for all the foodies as well as those who are passionate to know more about the subject.
After two years of the popular first book "La pâtisserie de Yann Couvreur”, the chef Yann Couvreur is publishing his second book "Ephémère - Les desserts à l’assiette de Yann Couvreur” later this month (21st November), and this time talking about plated desserts. If you still remember, he has told us during my interview with him that he always loves plated desserts even though he’s now running his own pastry shop and creating pastries that have a different logic. But as he is trained originally as a cuisinier, and had been working as a pastry chef in hotels during most of his career, plated desserts are something that naturally attracts him. Though named as “éphémère” (ephemeral in French), this book has captured the beauty of his work by gorgeous photographs. And by following the recipes, we readers and pastry passionates are able to recreate those delicacies. The book covers 48 plated deserts recipes that are divided into 3 parts: “Fraîcheur et acidité” (freshness and acidity), “Rondeur et gourmandise” (roundness and delicacies) as well as recipes from 13 invited great pastry chefs, such as Maxime Frédéric, Cédric Grolet, Nicolas Paciello, Michaël Bartocetti, François Perret, etc.
Last one is “Ma promesse - Récit d’un pâtissier d’exception” from Angelo Musa, head pastry chef of Hotel Plaza Athénée, Meilleur Ouvrier de France (2007), and the one who won the Pastry World Cup 2003 championship with the French team. The book is a biography that presents the career of this artist as a bold and avant-garde pâtissier, from his childhood to the sommet of the haute-pâtisserie. It also covers 25 recipes of his signature pastries and desserts. If you want to get to know more about this discret master chef, this book is a must-read.

local artist interview 在 Sonia Calico Facebook 的精選貼文
Hi 🙋🏻♀️ that’s me, I’m coming to Europe for the next few weeks. Hit me up 🤙
Born and raised in Taipei, DJ/Producer Sonia Calico has been at the forefront of Taiwan’s dance music scene, bringing a sharp ear for music that brings fun and unique grooves. She is always striving to find new music, never constrained by any genres and it shows in her works. From her beginnings with electronic female rock group Go Chic, to her production/sets under the Calico moniker, you can definitely experience a mature integration of a variety of influences from breakbeat, trap, b-more, footwork, grime, ballroom... etc. Throughout her evolution as an artist, one thing stays consistent: her ability to get a party started with her energetic sounds.
Being a core member of Go Chic, they released 2 studio albums. The 2nd album We Is Not Home was produced by Canadian electronic singer Peaches and won The Golden Indie Award for “Best Electronic Music Album of 2014”. Go Chic toured the world and got to play in big international festivals like SXSW, Summer Sonic, Fuji Rock and Modern Sky.
She then decided to pursue a solo career under Sonia Calico – bringing forth an edgier sound, with influences from Juke, Chill Trap, Bass, Hip-Hop, and Amen Break. Sonia Calico’s extensive discography includes a number of singles released under the Chinese label Do Hits, and an official remix of “More Tea” by Canadian musician, Ill Gates, for his 2016 EP. Her endeavors led to a recent appearance one of Asia’s and Taipei’s first Boiler Room event.
Her love for music extends beyond being a DJ/Producer. Forming a collective known as UnderU, she is committed to helping promote and nurture the scene by organizing unique electronic music parties that features acts like Night Slug’s Bok Bok, UK’s Deadly & Murlo, Beijing’s Howie Lee, Singapore collective/label Darker Than Wax & Australian artist, Air Max ’97, just to name a few. As if those weren’t enough, her grassroots efforts allowed her to help start Beatmakers Taipei, a platform where local producers regularly meet to exchange in knowledge and their music.
Sonia Calico released her debut EP Fake Jewelry in February of 2017 via San Francisco-based label Muti Music, along with several singles with Beijing-based label Do Hits. Her music has been gaining support around the world, including The Fader for the premiering and Bandcamp Daily for interview. And She has made her Boiler Room appearance in 2016.
In 2018 Sonia Calico came back with her 2nd EP Desert Trance.

This month at #GirlbossChat with Wendy, I get to sit down and have a chat with Malaysia's very own singer songwriter Beverly Matujal. We had a nice, cosy chat about her music, how she get to where she is today, and life as a Malaysian singer songwriter.
As someone who started off in YouTube with singing as well, it's inspiring to see how someone as talented as her make it into the industry and is doing so well. There are so many hurdles when it comes to growing a music career and Beverly had her fair share of struggles, so I think this video would be extra inspirational for those of you who are thinking of growing in the art/music scene. Share it with a friend who needs this!
As usual, because it's a long video, I've included a timestamp below for those of you who want to skip to specific questions, although you really should watch till the end for our singing collab! ? This video definitely doubles as a "podcast" style audio that you can listen to in the background while doing something else!
Love,
Wendy

With millions of fans around the world, Eden Kai has earned his reputation as being a ukulele and guitar virtuoso, a Pop/R&B vocalist, and an accomplished actor. While many were first introduced to Eden when he joined the cast of Netflix and Fuji Television’s Terrace House: Aloha State, the young star’s success had already been years in the making. He has since gone on to make additional appearances on Terrace House: Tokyo 2019-2020, appeared on Shiro to Kiiro on Amazon Prime and has performed at the Fuji Rock Festival (the largest outdoor music festival in Japan), Nisei Week Festival in Little Tokyo, OC Japan Fair and ANA Honolulu Music Week in Waikiki. His most recent album, Home Sweet Home, released in 2018 and was recorded in Tokyo, Japan, produced by his music label in Japan Victor Entertainment. Three tracks from that album were featured in episodes of Netflix Japan’s Terrace House during the show’s Opening New Doors and Tokyo 2019-2020 seasons.
