🚩 New Media Artist Hsin-Chien Huang Leads "Garden Taipei/Formosa: Taiwan Grand Tour" with 22 Taiwan's VR and New Media Artworks to 2021 Ars Electronica Linz in Austria🇦🇹
2021 ARS ELECTRONICA FESTIVAL Ars Electronica has chosen “A New Digital Deal” as its annual theme, centering around the social and cultural transformations under the influence of technology from different countries. Also, it pays attention to changes of “the New Normal” due to the pandemic.
Hsin-Chien Huang, this year’s curator of the “Garden Taipei/Formosa”, resonates the theme with the “Taiwan Grand Tour”, hoping to waken our desire and ability to move freely during the journey via different kinds of media, also make more people see the marvelous results and how hard Taiwan has devoted to technology, culture, tradition, and tradition via international digital platforms. The tour will have become a window between the world and Taiwan.
The scale of this year’s exhibitions has been brought up a notch. Not only did it carry on displaying the VR and AR productions from last year, but the curator Hsin-Chien Huang has collaborated with three other, Hsiao-Yue Tsao, Billy Chang, and Chung-Hsien Chen, to call out many VR directors, new media artists, start-up companies and government institutions to join the project. There are 22 magnificent programs in total, which will be shown in categories such as “Immersive Tour”, “Animated Tour”, “New Media Tour”, “Earth Tour” and “Action Tour” respectively.
“Immersive Tour”, as the first part of the “Taiwan Grand Tour”, viewers can wander among the mountains, oceans, and rivers in the digital world, even outer space! Six scenes inspired by unique Taiwanese landscapes with cultural and biological features will be shared with the audiences, such as “The Starry Sand Beach” (Directed by Hsin-Chien Huang and Nina Barbier), “Moondream Reality-Rebirth”(Directed by Chi-Yen Chiang, Ami Wu), the shuttle VR 360 stereo video of “TAIPOWER D/S ONE.” (Directed by Ghung-I Hung and Shih-Chou Wen), “Floating Childhoods” (Directed by Hakka Public Communication Foundation and Wen-Chieh Chang), “Blue Tears EP1” (Directed by Hsiao-Yue Tsao), and “Samsara” (Directed by Hsin-Chien Huang).
In the “Animated Tour”, viewers can devote themselves to the characters via different programs. Whether it is the abstract or figurative visual style, audiences can experience anxiety and frustration all the way to happiness and growth. Getting rid of this disappointing reality, viewers shall continue the “Taiwan Grand Tour” through their imagination. This program consists of four animations: "Go Go Giwas: Sowing Dream Seeds"(Directed by Vick Wang, Yi-Feng Kao), "My grandmother is an Egg"(Directed by Wu-Ching Chang),"Inside"(Directed by Yu-Ting Hsueh), and "The Wayward Kite"(Directed by Yu-Ting Hsueh).
In the “New Media Tour” program, nine brilliant pieces created by Taiwanese artists will be shared as the relay points for the “Taiwan Grand Tour.” They use video, sound, electronic music, installation, and various new media to explore different topics, such as family, memory, city, society, landscape, and environment. We firmly believe that digital tools can also capture the warmth and emotions in reality. This program consists of nine artworks: "Surrounding Spectrum"(Directed by Hsiu-Ming Wu), "Nanyang Express II : Eternal Wandering and Tropical Pursuing"(Directed by Yi-Chi Lin), "Wave Waves"(Directed by Sio-Pang Hong), "That ・ This"(Directed by Ching-Chuan Hu), "Signal"(Directed by Chin-Hsiang Hu), "Tower of Babel by the sea"(Directed by Wei-Chung Feng), "How to explain love to an iPhone"(Directed by Jie-Huai Yang), "U+617E_v2.∞"(Directed by Jia-Hua Zhan), and "Absence in Presence"(Directed by Ning Tsai).
In the program “Earth Tour”, viewers will participate in a performance art called “Taste Soil”, which intends to rethink the relationship between humans and land by means of “eating.” The program brings together international eminent chefs Andre Chiang, dancer Billy Chang, new media artist Hsin-Chien Huang and Wen-Chieh Chang, fusing Taiwan’s unique traditions and customs with cuisines and dance performances via VR experience. A feast to the eyes and tastebuds awaits.
Looking back at the present time, humans need to take more efficient scientific actions in the digital world to reduce the consumption and pressure of resources and the environment and cope with the impact in the post-pandemic times. Two important technology units in Taiwan make their debut in the “Action Tour”: Miniwiz Co., Ltd. and the Taipei Urban Intelligence Center. The former is devoted to the sustainable development of materials science with digital technology and design, while the latter is the integration of big data and streaming technology to create a new technical model of urban governance. Combing these two, an answer to developing a sustainable society with digital energy is born. During the tour, a new performance art project is inspired by the digital cross-field cooperation for the first time. The Taipei Urban Intelligence Center will join hands with new media artist Chin-Hsiang Hu and the founder of Inwheel Ghung-I Hung, to create a new media artwork “The Weight of Data” by integrating both virtual and physical materials from different domains and sharing data resources.
The brilliant curatorial concept and lineup of the Taiwan Grand Tour have attracted the interest of the officials of the festival and been in the limelight. Therefore, the festival has invited three creators behind the “Earth Tour”: Andre Chiang, Billy Chang, and Hsin-Chien Huang, to an online interview called “Highlight Channel” at 18:00 on September 1 (Taiwan Time). The link will be provided by the official later on. Moreover, Miniwiz Co., Ltd. and the Taipei Urban Intelligence Center are also invited to share their ideas and experiences in an online show called “Home Delivery.”
The theme of the Garden Taipei/ Formosa is presented in a diverse form of performances by combining different fields multiply. The audience can easily follow the step of the “Taiwan Grand Tour” to explore Taiwan’s magnificent local digital creativity and illustrate a new digital landscape unitedly that only belongs to Taiwan. The 2021 Ars Electronica online exhibition will be held from September 8 to 12, 2021. Click the link below to take a sneak peek of this year’s shows.

Asian superstar Jay Chou has been instrumental in the rise of Taiwanese band Nan Quan Mama, seeing something special in Devon Song, the only remaining member from the original line up and the man who is the soul of the band. Devon has won the hearts of millions of fans across the world, thrilling tens of thousands of Chinese admirers at the band’s recent shows. Nan Quan Mama touched down for the Australian leg of their tour in mid-april and Devon sat down with VISION for a chat about his latest passion: diving.
Devon Song met us at the entrance of Sea World on the Gold Coast, a pair of diving fins poking out of his backpack and his wet hair a clue to what he’d just been up to. Having just finished a dive, he was tired but still happy to do the interview. With a broad smile, he told us that he loves diving, visiting over 25 countries and going through 1,500 tanks of air in pursuit of his globally recognised diving instructor licence.
“I grew up by the seaside. As a child, I would go with my mum and auntie to catch fish and sell it at the market. I was captivated by the rich ocean life and I always knew it was something I wanted to explore.” As the sun set, Devon gestured at the water and said, “Once this crazy career exploded, the sea became my refuge and the only place where I could find peace.”
Many years of spending time among the mysteries of the oceans have given Devon a different perspective on life. “Over the past two years, I have been inspired by some amazing teachers. They’ve taken me to places where I’ve seen some incredible sights, such as the mass spawning aggregation of bump headed parrotfish and red snapper in Palau and the breathtaking biodiversity of the Komodo Islands. The highlight was swimming with the sand tiger shark, unique to the Ogasawara Islands near Tokyo. It’s a humbling experience when you understand how small and insignificant humans are in comparison to the majesty and vastness of the oceans.”
These experiences have kept Devon grounded and humble - he is always willing to learn more and is open to being taught by those with more experience of this amazing world. He once braved swimming with a giant hammerhead sharks to get some film for a movie and Devon wants to expand on this experience, saying, “I hope to one day follow these underwater photographers that I’ve worked with and to make an entertaining documentary about this beautiful world.”
Devon loves the diving opportunities that Australia has to offer. “Australia’s deep ocean is so beautiful! I’ve been diving all over the world and I’ve seen many beautiful places, but Australia is unique.” Let’s hope this love of our oceans means many more visits from this humble, soulful music star.
http://clients.visionmagazine.com.au/emagazine/201807/?clientcode=201807-10VMStreetStyle

Farewell. Ida – Ida Haendel 192?-2020
So Ida has left us – a legend has departed. What a violinist! What a woman! Magnificent, unique, incorrigible – she was a law unto herself.
First, the playing: a film about her was aptly entitled: ‘I AM the Violin.’ And she was! The violin was her life; she mastered it, devoted so much of her existence to it, cared so much about it. Every performance was an event, which she took absolutely seriously, giving each concert her all. She spoke through her violin, proved herself through it, lived within the music she made. She was a marvel, an icon; each note she played was the result of total conviction – and as a consequence was totally convincing. She had been groomed from the beginning to be a star – and a star she was.
But she was also an adorable person. I had heard of her, of course, from my childhood onwards – hadn’t everybody? But I didn’t meet her until - I think - 2000, when I attended a memorable recital she gave at the Wigmore Hall (apparently her debut there!), concluding with a magisterial performance of Enescu’s 3rd sonata. I’d heard, to my delight, that she’d heard me somewhere, and had liked it, so I dared to go backstage afterwards. Having enthused about her playing, I rather uncertainly told her that I was Steven. She looked at me disbelievingly. ‘You’re NOT’ she announced, in her wonderful deep voice. I assured her that I certainly had been last time I looked in the mirror. She accepted this, and proposed that we play the Brahms Double together. It was such an honour; but alas, I just couldn’t do the dates she suggested.
I came across her shortly thereafter, however, at the Verbier Festival. I’d seen that she was giving masterclasses there, so when I saw her, I asked how they were going. She looked at me severely. ‘Steven,’ she boomed, wagging her finger. ‘I don’t teach.’ I was puzzled; she was, after all, advertised as the teacher of the violin class. ‘So you like teaching?’ I said, provoking her. The finger wagged again. ‘Steven,’ she repeated with equal seriousness, ‘I don’t teach.’ ‘So how’s the teaching going?’ I asked. Her finger was on its way in my direction, and she’d started to say my name in the same tone of voice – when suddenly her face broke into a big smile. ‘Oh – so you’re a tease,’ she said. After that, we got on famously. My other main memory of that Verbier encounter was of her examining something – I couldn’t see what - in the hotel lobby, and then calling me over. It turned out that the object in her hands was an album of recent photos of her. ‘Look, Steven,’ she commanded urgently. ‘Don’t I look gorgeous?’
Later, we took her to dinner near her flat in London. Tottering through the streets in her high heels, she suddenly came to a stop in front of a (closed) clothes shop, where either a pair of gold shoes or a gold dress (I can’t remember which) had caught her eye. It was impossible to budge her, late though we were for the restaurant. ‘Wouldn’t I look wonderful in that?’ she asked us challengingly. We agreed that she would. ‘I’m coming back here tomorrow morning,’ she assured us. She spoke that night about her appearance. ‘You think I dress like this just to go out?’ she asked. ‘No! Catch me at breakfast – I’ll look just the same.’ Her pride in her appearance was never-changing. Perhaps in someone else it could have been too much – but with Ida, it was wonderful, admirable; life-affirming, in fact, like her pride in her playing.
It is funny that already I’ve seen two obituaries giving her age five years apart. She’d certainly have preferred the younger estimate… It was impossible to get the truth out of her. I remember asking another glorious violinist-character, Lorand Fenyves, whether he knew Ida. ‘Oh yes, of course!’ he replied. ‘I knew her when I was 16 and she was 15.’ He paused. ‘And now I’m 80 and’ his eyes twinkled, ‘she’s 55!’
Although we never got to play the Brahms Double together, we did perform the Beethoven Triple concerto with Martha Argerich and the Rotterdam Philharmonic under the then little-known Yannick Nezet-Seguin in (I think) 2006. Now THAT was an experience – to put it rather mildly… Playing with those two way-larger-than-life ladies was something not to be forgotten; the two adored each other, and it was great fun to witness their interaction. Ida had only played the piece once before, as I remember; but she played it with utter conviction. And Martha was – well, Martha. And Yannick kept the whole thing together, somehow. So – it was special…
It was supposed to happen again, in Miami (where Ida lived); but alas, it didn’t. Still, I kept in touch with Ida and on one memorable occasion got to interview her at the Wigmore Hall (there’s a recording of that occasion on Youtube). She also came down to Prussia Cove once for three days, her visit culminating in a breathtaking account of the Bach Chaconne (she sported an almost equally breathtaking dress to match!) at the Hall for Cornwall. We also played and taught/didn’t teach together in 2010 at the Summit Music Festival, just outside New York. That was another unforgettable experience. At the concert that concluded the festival, Ida played virtuoso pieces with the orchestra that would have been impressive in someone thirty years younger – even younger – than she was. But equally Ida-ish was the post-concert experience. For some reason, it got very late, and it was well after midnight when we were taken in search of food. Not surprisingly, there were few options in the countryside at that time of night; but eventually we found a 24-hour diner. We went in and occupied a table. Looking around at the bikers and other rather unpredictable-looking types, I was a tad nervous; not Ida. I fortified myself with a margarita; she had tea. At one point, the conversation turned to Schumann, and his 2nd violin sonata (which at that time I didn’t know very well). I asked a question about it. ‘You want to hear how it goes?’ Ida demanded to know. She strode over to her violin-case, pulled out the violin, and to the astonishment (and then, luckily the delight) of the assembled company, began to play it. A photo taken at the time (below) shows me a little less than comfortable – and her absolutely in her element.
Oh, Ida. By the last time I spoke to her – too long ago, but not that long ago – I’d heard that she’d become very forgetful, so wasn’t quite sure whether to call her or not. But I dialled anyway, and the phone was answered. ‘Hello, Ida?” ‘Who is it?’ ‘It’s Steven – Steven Isserlis.” Silence – then the phone went dead. Oh dear. I tried again. This time I was able to hold her attention long enough to remind her who I was. We started to talk, and as the conversation progressed, she evidently remembered more and more about our friendship. It was true that she repeated herself a lot; but still – she was very much Ida, the same wonderful voice, the same love of life.
And now she’s gone. Farewell, Ida the legend; we humanoids will miss you – but thank you, thank you for giving us so much. Everything, in fact.
