‘The grass is greener wherever you water it. Do your best, or don’t do it at all.’ -
When I started with my first kitchen job after A Levels, no one understood what I was doing. Took a gap year to satisfy my curiosity of what kitchen life was like.
10 years on, I’m still in this industry. Different roles, but always a part of it. Student, trainee, cook, sales exec, consultant, host, judge, celebrity chef, trainer, business owner, demo chef and product specialist. Both locally and abroad. For sure, it isn’t for everyone nor the faint-hearted.
You sacrifice holidays, special occasions, your love life, your feelings, watching kids grow up, and so much more. You don’t take things so personally anymore, and know that it’s all part of the job. You get mad and have heated arguments, then go back to hi-fives to celebrate successes and having meals together. It takes a special breed to survive and excel in the industry, and an even more understanding kind to be partners of these special breed. The people who support and stand by us are the real champs.
When you love what you do, the lines between passion, career and hobby are blurred. You eat, live, breathe, sleep, dream, travel and love everything about it.
On to the next chapter of my career, as a woman, muslimah in hijab, no less. My heart is full from the amazing people who have accepted me as I am, given me the chance and opportunities to be the best I can be. My life has changed tremendously in a span of 2 months. What I thought I wouldn’t go back to, became the very thing I needed as a comeback and to ignite my once jaded soul.
