37 Miracles of Jesus (Miracle 1): Cleansing the Leper
“When he came down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. Behold, a leper came to him and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Jesus said to him, “See that you tell nobody, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”” (Matthew 8:1-4 WEB)
The power of this miracle is that no Israelite has ever been cleansed of leprosy since the ceremonial law of cleansing a leper was given to Israel by Moses (Leviticus 14:1-32).
By cleansing the leper from leprosy, Jesus proved that He is the Messiah Israel was waiting for.
That’s why Jesus told the leper to go and show himself to the priest and offer the gift according to the law of leprosy, as a testimony to Israel.
Jesus told the man not to tell anyone about it probably so that he would focus on the task at hand to prepare the items needed for the ceremonial cleansing and to make the trip from the Galilee region to the temple at Jerusalem.
Look at the beautiful manner in which Jesus cleansed the leper. He didn’t have to touch him, but He chose to.
I can only imagine how long that leper had been without physical contact from society.
By touching him, Jesus proved that He was really willing to cleanse him.
Other kings may have healed the stinky and dirty leper from a distance—but not our loving, humble Savior King.
““‘Or if he touches the uncleanness of man, whatever his uncleanness is with which he is unclean, and it is hidden from him; when he knows of it, then he shall be guilty.” (Leviticus 5:3 WEB)
Under the Law of Moses, a person who touched a leper would become ceremonially unclean, but when Jesus touched the leper, He made the leper clean. His touch is greater than whatever affliction you’re facing.
In the Bible, leprosy is a picture of our sins. We were totally leprous but Jesus was willing to cleanse us from it by becoming a Man, and even to the extent of dying a bloody, painful death at the cross for us.
Dear brethren, if God through Jesus was willing to suffer all that to cleanse you from your sins, wouldn’t He be willing to heal your body of sickness, provide for all your needs, give you a blessed family life and make you fruitful in all you do?
See Jesus’ eyes of compassion and love fixed upon you today. He is so willing and able to supply the Grace for every need that you have!
