Yesterday’s National Day Rally at Mediacorp was my 17th rally speech, but the first time done through a hybrid format. Apart from the small studio audience, some 1,800 attendees joined in through Zoom, with their faces appearing on a massive screen that wrapped around the studio.
In my speech, I spoke about how we are strengthening support for lower wage workers, and addressed concerns over foreign work pass holders. I also touched on race and religion, which is a constant work in progress especially here in Singapore.
COVID-19 will not be our last crisis. But I’m confident Singapore has what it takes to face any trials head on and prevail as one united people. We’ve done it before, and we’ll do it again! 🇸🇬

I recorded this year’s National Day Message at the Botanic Gardens. This was where my parents brought me to watch the first Aneka Ragam Rakyat, or People’s Variety Concert, on 2 August 1959. These were a series of free, open-air concerts with a multicultural theme. They were organised by the newly elected PAP government, to start us on our journey of becoming one people, one nation.
We have come a long way since then. However, the pandemic has strained fault lines in our society, and sharpened difficult issues that we need to deal with. I spoke about three: lower wage workers, foreign work pass holders, and race and religion. While not new issues, we must address them and not let them cause divisions among us.
On COVID-19, more than two thirds of residents are now fully vaccinated, putting us in a more resilient position. We can look forward to a careful re-opening of our economy, and moving into the new normal. So long as we stay united, and keep on building a more harmonious society, Singapore will continue to prosper for generations to come.
I wish all Singaporeans a very happy National Day! 🇸🇬

Every year, Mazu (the patron goddess of seafarers) sets off on a pilgrimage from her home at Zhenlan Temple in Taichung’s Dajia District. This is the biggest Mazu pilgrimage in Taiwan in terms of the number of official participating brigades, or processional teams. It also has the largest number of followers who spontaneously join the procession along the way. The route of the nine-day, eight-night procession follows the path of early immigrants as they spread out across Taiwan. Apart from revisiting historical paths, the procession also strengthens the faith of local believers and helps them gain a deeper understanding of the significant cultural value behind this event. This ancient and elaborate sacrificial rite is a precious cultural asset. In recent years, the scale of the event has grown, becoming a classic example of how folk religion evolves in response to societal changes. In recent years, Dajia’s Mazu Pilgrimage has been named one of the world’s three biggest religious festivals by the Discovery Channel, and UNESCO has included Mazu beliefs and customs on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In 2020, with the global pandemic of novel coronavirus as a challenge in our life marked by impermanence, Dharma Drum Mountain made an extra effort to calm people’s mind through the power of religion. To be in line with the disease prevention measures, it organized a series of online Dharma assemblies to pray for the world, and offered various online group practice activities, streamed in real time at its branch practice centers at home and abroad, for practitioners to continue with their practice during the pandemic. In addition, its social care work, including visits and emergency relief efforts, as well as academic exchange activities were never compromised despite the pandemic. Its lay and monastic practitioners continued to uphold Master Sheng Yen’s compassionate vow, consistently dedicated to promoting the purification of human minds and enhancing world peace and harmony.
A revised version, the Memorial Edition of Complete Works of Master Sheng Yen 2020 comprising altogether 108 books was published. Dharma Drum Mountain expects to give the collection to interested centers for Chinese studies and major libraries around the world, for Master Sheng Yen’s insight to be shared with global readers.
To welcome the year 2021, let’s pray that we can all use the calming power of Buddhist practice to help transform distress and suffering in the world, enabling everyone to truly enjoy peace and ease.
