Shum told US National Public Radio that he had received two calls from Duan, also known by her English name Whitney, on the eve of the book’s release.
According to Shum, Duan said she was on “temporary release” and asked him to cancel publication of Red Roulette, which has been widely reviewed over the past week.
He added he had been warned by a well-connected friend in Beijing that “they are not going to let her come out alive” — or would only release her in a vegetative state. “I was shocked when I heard that,” Shum said. “That always circulates in my mind.”

Rest in God and Bear Good Fruit
“The children of Israel again did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight; and Yahweh delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. There was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and childless. Yahweh’s angel appeared to the woman, and said to her, “See now, you are barren and childless; but you shall conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore please beware and drink no wine nor strong drink, and don’t eat any unclean thing: for, behold, you shall conceive, and give birth to a son. No razor shall come on his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb. He shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”” (Judges 13:1-5 WEB)
The name “Manoah” means “rest”.
In a time of great stress and suffering for the children of Israel, God chose Manoah and his wife to bring forth a champion son who would deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines.
He chose the one called “rest” to produce rest for Israel from her enemies.
Notice how Manoah’s son (Samson) would be specially set apart and dedicated to God, just as Jesus was anointed to be the one who would save the world from their sins.
There are parallels between Jesus and Samson.
One major similarity is that both of them died with their arms outstretched, and through their death, more enemies were defeated than through their other deeds when they were alive.
Both are saviors, called and anointed to save the people that God loves.
Are you barren and childless in any area of your life at the moment? God will supply His grace to make you bear good fruit. He can send you something so wonderful that brings glory to His name.
Just be “Manoah”—resting in God, trusting in His promises. He has a good future planned for you!
