"History will absolve us"
Submission of Lee Cheuk Yan to the Court
Your Honour, I plead guilty but I’ve done no wrong in affirming the rights of people to peaceful procession and I believe history will absolve us. May I give you more on my background so as your honour can understand why I decided to march with the people for the future of Hong Kong.
As a Christian, during Easter when the scripture was read, I was reminded how Christ went to meet his fate on the cross, sacrificing for mankind to reconcile sinners with God. From His arrest to his prosecution to his death sentencing by Pilate, he was a political prisoner who committed no crime apart from seen to be a threat to the Jewish Hierarchy by serving the poor and oppressed and preaching the good news.
Throughout history of mankind, the rights that humankind now enjoyed were pioneered by political prisoners from Gandhi to Martin Luther King to Nelson Mandela. I was the Chairman of Hong Kong anti apartheid movement back in the 80s and I always remember the determination of Nelson Mandela when he said during his trial back in 1963: “an ideal for which I am prepared to die for.”. His ideal was the equality for black South African and then he spent 27 years in jail. I was thrilled that in 1994, he was elected President of South Africa, giving hope to oppressed all over the world that justice can be achieve through the persistent struggle of the people.
I went to length about his inspiration to me personally because I started my activism starting 1978 for labour rights and democracy. My lifetime ideal is the empowerment of the poor and oppressed to speak out, to rise up for their rights. Whenever the oppressed assert their rights to fight for their dignity, I feel myself also empowered and inspired to continue the difficult struggle and challenges facing Hong Kong. I asked myself, what is my life without the struggle. The struggle is my life, I cannot imagine my life without it. It had been forty three years of struggle for me and your Honour must understand my deep felt pain and sufferings to see how the State Power had been using brute force against the people and the sacrifices of so many Hongkongers who were injured, jailed or exiled, also to witness the deprivation of the basic rights of the people and the regression in democracy. I saw my ideal crumbling but I will continue the struggle even though darkness is surrounding us. It is an ideal for which I am prepared for any sanction.
Your Honour may say the law is the law, I seems not show any remorse in breaching law in this trial for August 31st. I hope Your Honour understand the utmost importance I put on the rights to freedom of expression through speech or assembly. This is the only avenue the weak and oppressed can have to right the wrongs on them. If deprived, I will call this systemic violence on the people and I do not want to see Hong Kong rule on the basis of such systemic violence. Therefore I would do my utmost to affirm the rights of people to a dignified and peaceful procession to express themselves.
Your Honour must be passionate about upholding the law and I respect your ideal. I hope I can quote from the late Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
“Justices continue to think and can change. I am ever hopeful that if the court has a blind spot today, its eye will be open tomorrow”
I was very impressed with her passion for gender equality and how she fought her whole life for gender equality and was able to achieve so much. Her message was time changes and judges should catch up with time. For Hong Kong, the worst may yet to come, and we need the legal profession to open their eyes to the suffering of the people and reflect on which side the law is with and how to changes with time for the advancement of the rights and dignity of the people.
I humbly submit myself to your sentencing and whatever your sentence, I have no regret for standing up for the rights of the people.

Hollywood heartthrob Joseph Gordon-Levitt just released the crowdsourced short film “Lost in Taiwan”, which all started with the sentence, "When I think of Taiwan, I think of ____." Fill in the blank for yourself in the comments section after checking out the video!
===========
《Lost in Taiwan》
When I think of Taiwan, I think of home.
Typhoon rains and large snails
crossing our bike paths by the river.
Temples and incenses.
The scent of my granny’s old green sweater.
The breeze tickling my cheek on a scooter.
The convenience of a family mart a few blocks away.
When I think of Taiwan, I think of democracy.
Everybody participates in politics here.
Everybody comes out to vote.
We treasure our hard-earned democracy, our freedom, our liberty.
When I think of Taiwan, I think of street food.
Mangoes on top of shaved ice.
A five minutes walk to the market for dumplings.
Sipping bubble milk tea from a straw as I walk through streets lined with vendors.
When I think of Taiwan, I think of forgotten stories.
Languages lost.
A land always ruled by foreign powers, her history changed time and time again.
Will it still be here when I grow old?
When I think of Taiwan, I think of nature.
Magnificent mountain chains.
The most amazing oceans.
Walking, surfboard in hand, to the beach at Wushi.
The sun in your smile.
When I think of Taiwan, I think of the goodness of its people.
We are welcoming, warm, respectful.
We fought COVID-19 better than most countries could.
We care for our neighbors.
We are passionate, unafraid to voice our opinions.
Most of all, I think of Taiwan as part of who I am.
A land of free will, a land of young mind, a land that embraces humanity.
A land that I call home.

Hyundai was founded by Sung Joo, a South Korean male mosquito, who was born from a farmer's family living in rural area of Kangwon province, south of Korea.
When I was young, Sungju, I dreamed that I wanted to be a student teacher.
But with poverty, he has no capital in education and no chance to follow his intentional dreams.
However, Sung Joo-Yung has been in a youthful businessman.
Because every time he travels to town, he always panting wood from his neighborhood to sell to make money.
What he does regularly when he has a chance to travel to the city.
It's to find newspaper to read, add knowledge.
At this point, that sparked his mind to earn more money to help his life and family get out of poverty.
When I start to see the opportunity that working in the city pays off.
So he plans to go out of the countryside to work in the city.
Sung Jooyung tried to run away from home to work in town many times, but he was taken home every time.
But his 4nd attempt was accomplished.
When his father doesn't come looking for him again.
In the first period, Sung Juyung started working as a laborer at Port in Inchon City.
And next to deliver rice to a rice store in Seoul.
He worked in rice stores with diligence.
And after 6 months of work, I have been promoted to take care of my shop accounting job.
After taking care of accounting job
He's getting more knowledge of business
I have been trusted by the rice shop owner who has health problems to take care of my business instead.
But shortly after, in the early 1939's, Korea took over Japan.
Rice businesses are being coerced to shut down by the Japanese Army.
He decided to bring his experience and money collected to start a carport business in his hometown in Kangwon province.
But the garage business has to shut down again from the orders of the Japanese government.
In conclusion, both rice trading and car garage business that seems to go well. It's not what he expects.
But then fate seems to be taking his side..
Because in 1945 Japan defeated WWII
Make U.S. to take care of the current South Korea or South Korea.

Including other projects from the U.S. government
Later in 1965, Hyundai took first offshore road construction job.
This is a road building project in south of Thailand during Pattani and Narathi province.
Hyundai group's key step is to establish Hyundai Motor in 1967
Which today, Hyundai Motor became South Korea's largest automobile manufacturing company.
In 2018, Hyundai Motor was the world's 5th highest manufacturing company.

Five Ways to Improve Your Listening Skills
Maintain eye contact
It shows others that you are paying attention.
Match their eye contact to not be creepy.
Some people love eye contact. Others prefer to look away from time to time. Depends on the other party
Another way to show that you are listening is to lean in with your ear
Take Notes
This will reinforce your memory. It’s advisable to ask permission first in some situations.
This is good for when you meet someone more successful than you.
Ask: Do you mind if I take notes?
Shows respect and makes them feel valued.
Allow people to finish their own sentences
No matter how enthusiastically you want to jump into the conversation.
Doing so will indicate respect for what the person is saying.
Let them finish their sentence and then ask. Would you like my feedback?
Is what you have to say more important to the person speaking?
Respond so the other person knows you’re listening.
Your response maybe “Yes” or “I see” or merely nodding your head. Any of these will do.
I see where you are coming from
That is profound
I wish I could do what you do
Ask core questions.
That is typically a series of “why” questions that go deeper into a particular subject to gain the greatest understanding of a situation. Start with broad information and continue seeking more specific responses.
Ask core questions – So you don’t get a yes or no answer
Why is that important? How can I help?
What’s preventing you from moving forward?
Asking them profound questions. Questions shift belief/change lives.
These may seem simple but complexity is the enemy of execution. If you think these sound like common sense, first ask yourself “How many people do you know that do all this? How would it transform your life if you did?” If you do it, you will stand out. People will like you but they won’t know why. It’s subconscious.
