THỦ CÔNG MỸ NGHỆ CÓ LỖI THỜI TRONG NGHỆ THUẬT ĐƯƠNG ĐẠI?
Sau một thời gian dài muốn thoát khỏi vẻ đẹp nịnh mắt và chỉ tập trung vào ý niệm, vào khoảng đầu TK XXI, cái nghệ sĩ đương đại bỗng hứng thú và quay lại nghiên cứu về các thực hành thủ công trong việc sáng tác. Các phương pháp thêu, đan móc, làm mộc, làm gốm, thổi thủy tinh… bỗng dưng thịnh hành, vừa là chủ đề vừa là phương pháp để nghệ sĩ sáng tác. Trước đây, nghệ sĩ luôn tìm các thoát ra khỏi cái bóng “mỹ nghệ”, ví như cách cụ Nguyễn Gia Trí đã mang chất liệu sơn mài vượt lên tầm nghệ thuật hồi những năm 1930s. Ngày nay, các nghệ sĩ đương đại không ngừng tìm ra điểm dung hòa giữa kỹ thuật và ý niệm. Thực hành thủ công trong tác phẩm đương đại không chỉ đóng vai trò tạo hình, trang trí, mà còn góp thêm một tầng nghĩa, một câu chuyện cho tác phẩm.
Vậy theo cả nhà, lằn ranh giữa “nghệ thuật” và “thủ công mỹ nghệ” là gì?

HAVE CRAFTS BECOME OUT OF FASHION IN CONTEMPORARY ART?
After a long period of breaking away from the aesthetic beauty and an emphasis on the concept, from the early 21st century, there has been a sudden wave of interest in the study and application of craftsmanship in contemporary art practice. Techniques such as embroidery, weaving, woodwork, ceramics and glassblowing…are unexpectedly in fashion as a subject matter or as a methodology for art-making. Back in the days, artists would often try to avoid being seen as “artisans” just like how artist Nguyen Gia Tri helped elevate the artistic status of sơn mài (lacquer) in the 1930s. In the present days, contemporary artists have never ceased to look for the similarities between techniques and concept. Craftmanship used in contemporary artworks are not only for the shaping or decoration, but it also contributes another layer of meanings, and stories for the work per se. So, where is the boundary between “art” and “crafts”? Below are several works (including one of mine) that I like in which the artists made use of the “crafts” elements.
