How To Have Amazing Conversations With Anyone, Anywhere At Anytime:
1) Get the conversation started by “cold reading”.
This might sound a little bit new age and a little hippy but it is a great way of quickly developing rapport with someone oppose to asking stale boring interview like questions; "where are you from?", "what do you do?" etc.
For example I might say, “I am going to take a wild guess here and say you work in advertising, you have that creative look about you”.
Of course don’t say this if they don’t look creative. Make the observation relevant to their appearance. And for gods sake don’t make the observation judgmental whatever you do. I.e. “You look like something who sits at a computer all day."
If they don’t work in advertising it doesn’t matter in the slightest bit. They will correct you and something something like, “Actually no I work in HR, what makes you think that?”, which now means you an interesting topic of conversation instead of the boring same old questions associated with meeting people. Chances are this method of breaking the ice will also make you a lot more memorable.
2) Keep the conversation going by using "Jump off points”
Eg. “I went to university in England, however I’d much rather have gone to university in America, I definitely feel more connected to the American way of life oppose to the British”. There are endless topics of conversation to do with the above statement, like:
-What did they study in England?
-Where did they study? (Instead, where you went to University and your experiences)
-What makes them feel connected to the American way of life?
-What makes them feel disconnected to the British way of life?
