Let’s be absolutely clear, Hong Kongers on protests don’t hate police, what we hate are bad policing and bad police.
• Looking scruffy, not wearing your required hat, and having unpolished shoes is bad policing.
• Enforcing an old colonial, unjust law of illegal assembly, on a modern, sophisticated city like Hong Kong is bad policing.
• Hog-tying protesters, breaking their bones and sexually harassing them when they are arrested for illegal assembly is bad policing.
• Using guns and chemical weapons against people with umbrellas is bad policing.
• Dehumanising the majority of society by referring to them as cockroaches is bad policing.
• Letting triad gangs run amok with no consequences is bad policing.
• Colluding with triads to create a climate of terror is bad policing.
• Shooting CS gas at residents is bad policing.
• Not wearing your ID numbers, even though it’s regulation, is bad policing.
• Using ID checks to intimidate and oppress Hong Kongers is bad policing.
• Breaking regulations on the use of weapons is bad policing.
• Getting into angry arguments with residents is bad policing.
• Blatantly lying or spreading false rumours in press conferences is bad policing.
• Using methods designed to prevent terrorism to target HK democracy protesters is bad policing.
• Putting thugs in taxis or walking them up the street when they should be arrested is bad policing.
• Hiding you face so that you can break police regulations without consequence is bad policing.
I’m sure there’s many more.
The police can do a lot to rehabilitate their reputation. The only people who appreciate the police these days are Chinazis, triads and low level thugs.

Francis Fong Po-kiu, president of the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, was not optimistic that taxis could catch up with Uber on quality any time soon, let alone surpass it.
He said the taxi industry had developed mobile apps before, only for some cabbies to use them to cherry-pick passengers more efficiently.
“If the attitude stays the same, service quality will not improve,” Fong said.
He said the Hong Kong government needed to end its ambiguity over Uber.
“Either you adopt this mode of economy and regulate it, or you ban it,” he said.
As it is illegal to provide transport services without a hire car permit, most Uber drivers break the law by charging to carry passengers.
Fong believes that if the government accepted Uber, Hong Kong would see major changes to the transport industry.
