Discussion with economist Lam Pun-lee
Why are people on the streets so very determined to get all five (or six) demands fulfilled?
Would all protests be brought to a stop if the government offers generous cash handouts or housing for all? If not, then what do Hongkongers really want?
This week, we talked to economist Dr. Lam Pun-lee about his interpretation of the current political stalemate in Hong Kong.
In Carrie Lam’s third Policy Address, she acknowledged that it’s the government’s role to provide adequate housing. Failing to meet citizens’ housing needs may cost the Chief Executive social harmony and stability.
The government has announced plans to resume more privately owned brown-field sites to build public housing. To some, it’s a decision that came a bit late. Yet, it’s still good news that the Chief Executive has finally agreed to use the Land Resumption Ordinance to optimize land use.
