💵When Sony, a Japanese electronics giant, reported its latest set of quarterly results on October 28th, the star performer was the firm’s video-gaming division, which makes the PlayStation line of consoles. In a year marked by lockdowns and working from home, gaming revenue instead grew by 11.5% year-on-year as housebound consumers reached for their controllers.
日本電子巨頭SONY於10月28日公佈最新季報時，生產PlayStation系列主機的電子遊戲部門是公司的明星功臣。在這烙印著封鎖隔離和居家工作的一年裡，無法出門的消費者拿起搖桿，促使遊戲收入比起去年成長了11.5%
🏠Most forecasters expected covid-19 to boost the video-gaming business. The pandemic has given a filip to other forms of indoor entertainment, from board games to video-streaming to books. But the scale of the surge has caught industry-watchers by surprise. A games-industry analyst reckons industry revenues will reach $175bn this year, a rise of 20%. Even for an industry that had been growing by 9% annually, 2020 has been a barnstorming year.
預測專家大多預期新冠病毒能促進電子遊戲業，另外從棋盤類遊戲到串流影音和書籍，疫情也刺激了其他形式的室內娛樂。但上升的規模卻讓產業觀測者驚訝，一名遊戲業分析師推估今年的遊戲業總收入將高達1750億美元，提高了20%。儘管遊戲業過去每年成長9%，2020仍是高潮迭起的一年。

The tech giants think cloud computing, fast broadband and 5g mobile networks mean the time is right to try the same thing with video games.
